Editorials English Vocabulary Words Set 14

The following vocabulary words are taken from The Hindu Editorials which are important for the upcoming exams. Add some more words to your English vocabulary list.

  1. Flippant – not showing a serious or respectful attitude.

    • Synonyms: frivolous, superficial, shallow, glib, irresponsible, insouciant
    • Antonyms: serious, respectful
    • Usage: Economic Affairs Secretary asked Amazon to desist from being flippant about Indian symbols and icons.
  2. Disenchantment – a feeling of disappointment about someone or something you previously respected or admired; disillusionment

    • Synonyms: discontentedness, cynicism, disillusion, bafflement
    • Antonyms: euphoria, triumph, delight
    • Usage: There are signs of disenchantment among Muslims with the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh.
  3. Formidable – inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense, or capable

    • Synonyms: intimidating, forbidding, redoubtable, daunting
    • Antonyms: unthreatening, feeble, trivial
    • Usage: India has come up against many formidable teams over the years in the Davis Cup
  4. Nefarious – wicked or criminal

    • Synonyms: heinous, horrible, odious, outrageous
    • Antonyms: delightful, magnificent, virtuous
    • Usage: The “nefarious design” of the “anti-national elements” in Kashmir is to keep the State on the boil.
  5. Sundry – of various kinds; several varied

    • Synonyms: assorted, diver, manifold,
    • Antonyms: individual, singular, dissimilar
    • Usage: The government said it had taken note of the large amounts of ‘sundry income in the accounts of several Indian entities.
  6. Vantage – a place or position affording a good view of something

    • Synonyms: eminence, expediency, perspective, gratification
    • Antonyms: impairment, subordination, incapacity
    • Usage: Vantage view from right across the road
  7. Trivialize – make (something) seem less important, significant, or complex than it really is

    • Synonyms: underestimate, deprecate, belittle, derogate
    • Antonyms: speak clearly, conceal, hide
    • Usage: Upset Hindus seek apology for trivializing Hindu god in TV series.
  8. Protract – to draw out or lengthen, especially in time; extend the duration of; prolong.

    • Synonyms: elongate, procrastinate, prolongate
    • Antonyms: expedite, abbreviate, curtail
    • Usage: Street vendors feel let down, gear up for protracted struggle.
  9. Emanate – originate from; be produced by

    • Synonyms: emerge, exude, derive, radiate
    • Antonyms: conceal, withdraw, 
    • Usage: Most of the problems that emanate in the society today can be traced to the mind that is not fully developed.
  10. Extrapolate – estimate or conclude (something)

    • Synonyms: hypothesize, anticipate, envision, foresee, predict
    • Antonyms: doubt
    • Usage: We can extrapolate the number of new students entering next year by looking at how many entered in previous years.
