Centre approves establishment of NIMHR in Bhopal

The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR) at Bhopal as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 under the aegis of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

  • The estimated cumulative cost of the project is Rs. 179.54 crore in first three years. This includes the non-recurring expenditure of Rs. 128.54 crore and recurring expenditure of Rs. 51 crore.
  • The main objectives of the NIMHR are to provide rehabilitation services to the persons with mental illness, capacity development in the area of mental health rehabilitation, policy framing and advanced research in mental health rehabilitation.

Centre approves 2 medical colleges in Odisha

The Union Health ministry has approved two schemes of the Odisha government for the establishment of two new Government Medical Colleges in Balasore and Balangir districts of the state with 100 seats each, for the academic year 2018-19.

  • The two government medical colleges will come up under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing District/Referral Hospitals.’

Delhi will be world’s biggest city by 2028: UN

Delhi will become the world’s largest city in a decade by 2028, according to the UN.

  • Based on the revised World Urbanisation Prospects 2018 report of UN, Delhi is projected to surpass Tokyo as the world’s largest agglomeration around the year 2028. Tokyo remains the world’s largest city in the world with 37 million inhabitants currently.

Guwahati now has India’s first solar powered railway station

Guwahati now has India’s first railway station run by solar power. The project of installing solar panels was commissioned last year in April 2017.

  • The solar-powered station is aimed at reducing carbon-footprint as well as cut down power costs drastically.

‘Raaya’ becomes India’s official entry for Cannes

A short film, ‘Raaya’, about an autistic girl has been chosen as India’s official entry into the Cannes Film Festival 2018. The film is produced by Rakesh Gupta and written by hypnotherapist Richa Agarwal.

  • The film is scheduled to exhibit at the 71st Cannes Festival on May 18, second to last day of the festival.
  • Apart from the honour, ‘Raaya’ has already bagged the ‘Special Festival Mention Award’ at Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2018.

Yeddyurappa sworn-in as Karnataka’s 23rd CM

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s  B.S. Yeddyurappa has been sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on May 17 for the third time. 

  • Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yeddyurappa as the 23rd Chief Minister of the state at 9 a.m. at the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.
  • Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court headed by three-judge bench of Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice SA Bobde did not put a stay on the swearing-in-ceremony of the CM enabling him to take oath for forming his government.
  • Congress and JD(S) pleaded BJP’s inadequate strength in the assembly and asked apex court to put stay at forming the state government.

Himanta Sarma elected as vice-president of Badminton Asia Confederation

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the President of Badminton Association of India (BAI), has been elected unanimously as the vice-president of Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) during the Annual General Meeting of the body at Bangkok, Thailand.

Eminent Artist and Sculptor, Shri Uttam Pacharne appointed regular Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi 

The President of India has appointed Shri Uttam Pacharne, as regular Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi. Shri Pacharne is an eminent artist and sculptor.

  •  Shri Pacharne will hold office for a term of three years from the date on which he assumes the charge of his office.

Character actor Joseph Campanella dead at 93

Veteran character actor Joseph Campanella, who has appeared in more than 200 TV and film roles over his 50-year career, is dead. He was 93.
