Haryana approves scheme to provide Rs 8,000 monthly assistance to female acid victim

The Haryana state government has approved a scheme to provide monthly financial assistance of Rs 8,000 to female acid victims.

  • Besides, the women and girl acid attack victims would also be given preference in the allotment of fair price shops by the Haryana Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department.
  • The financial assistance would be given to female acid attack victims who would come within the definition of disability under Section 2 (i) of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights of Full Participation) Act, 1995.

‘COP CONNECT mobile App for Telangana police launched

The Telangana police have launched a mobile-based messenger application named ‘Cop Connect’ to provide real time information to over 60,000 police officers across 31 districts in the state.

  • ‘Cop Connect’ messaging App, developed by the department on the lines of WhatsApp, will support the police department in improving quality of service delivered to public.
  • The app has been developed based on police’s internal communication strategy which will enable the entire workforce to pro-actively engage and pass real time information in seconds.

Government to expand BPO promotion scheme, plans largest National Data Centre in Bhopal

The Indian Government has planned to expand its BPO promotion scheme from current 48,000 seats to one lakh seats as well as set up India’s largest National Data Centre in Bhopal.

  • The National Data Centres, that host Government websites, services and apps, are currently operational at four locations namely Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Bhubaneswar.
  • The fifth and the largest National Data Centre will come up in Bhopal with capacity of five lakh virtual servers.
  • Highlighting the achievements of IT and Electronics Ministry in the last four years, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad  announced that as many as 59.15 crore Indians have linked 87.79 crore bank accounts with the biometric identifier Aadhaar and nearly Rs 4 lakh crore has been disbursed as direct benefit transfer to poor people which has led to savings of Rs 90,000 crore by removing fictitious beneficiaries in the last four years.
Vice President Receives The Book ‘Vedvigyan Alok’

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has received the book “Vedvigyan Alok” (Maharishi Aitareya Mahidas Praneet – Aitareya Brahmina ki Vaigyanik Vyakhya) authored by Acharya Agnivarat Naishthik.

  • The Book Vedvigyan Alok is the scriptural verse in Vedas’ prose and is divided into four broad volumes.

Shillong Gets Selected As the 100th Smart City

Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya has been selected as 100th Smart City, to receive funding under the Centre’s flagship Smart Cities Mission, after evaluating the proposal submitted by it.

  • Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition and with Shillong’s selection, the list of 100 cities has been completed under the Smart Cities Mission.
  • The total proposed investment in the finally selected 100 cities under the Smart Cities Mission would be Rs.2,05,018 crores.

Punjab Government Launched Mobile App- ‘i-Hariyali’

To increase the state’s green cover, the Punjab government has launched ‘i-Hariyali’ app that lets users order free plant saplings.

  • The ‘i-Hariyali’ app under ‘Mission Tandarust’ can be downloaded from the app store for free.
  • The users can book a sapling of their choice, a maximum of 25 per person, from a nearby government nursery.
  • The app aims to inspire people to plant more saplings to save the environment from pollution.

Tripura to execute Smart City project with ADB loan

The state government of Tripura has taken Rs 500 crore as loan from the  Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Hudco (Housing and Urban Development Corporation) to carry out the Rs 1,000 crore smart City project in Agartala by 2021.

  • The loan was taken to meet the matching share of the state government.

Odisha announces amnesty scheme to regularize unauthorized buildings

The Odisha government has relaunched an amnesty scheme titled ‘Scheme for Regularisation of Unauthorized Construction 2018′ to regularize unauthorized constructions and projects.

  • Under the latest version of the scheme, cleared by the Planning and Building Standards Regulations, unauthorized constructions can be regularized by paying specific fees along with submission of building construction plan and fire clearance certificate.
  • The Amnesty Scheme’ or ‘Sarbakhyama Yojana’ intends to give an opportunity to every citizen for regularizing unauthorised construction undertaken within the development area concerned, prior to the date of the commencement of the Scheme, by way of compounding on payment of fees at the rates prescribed in the scheme so as to bring it into the fold of authorized development.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

UK excludes India from student visa norms list

The United Kingdom government has excluded Indian students from a new list of “low risk” countries eligible for easier visa application to the UK.

  • The decision is based on India’s refusal to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the return of illegal Indian immigrants in the UK to India and vice-versa.
  • Excluding India from the list damages its relations with the UK and snatches away a lot of easy education opportunities for hopeful Indian students.
  • UK Government has announced changes to its immigration policy with relaxation of the Tier 4 visa category for overseas students from around 25 countries.
  • The list covering countries like the US, Canada and New Zealand, the Home Office has added countries like China, Bahrain and Serbia, where students would face reduced checks on educational, financial and English language skill requirements to study at British universities.
  • The changes, which come into effect on July 6, 2018.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI Alters ‘Relative’ Definition to Check Outward Remittances

With the aim to prevent any misuse of flow of fund abroad, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has narrowed the definition of ‘Relatives’.

  • According to RBI, the funds sent abroad under the ‘maintenance of close relative’ category of the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) can be now sent only to immediate relatives such as parents, spouses, children and their spouses.
  • For this RBI has brought the definition of ‘Relatives’ under the Companies Act, 2013 instead of Companies Act, 1956.
  • The decision was taken since outward remittances under maintenance of close relatives shot up more than double to almost $3 billion in 2017-18 from a mere $174 million in 2013-14.

Bank of Baroda ropes in IBM, Accenture for ‘increased digitisation’

The Bank of Baroda has announced its partnership with technology majors IBM and Accenture to enhance business growth and portfolio diversification using “digitisation”.

  • Under the tie up, BoB will power its state-of-the-art IT Centre of Excellence (ITCoE) and Analytics Centre of Excellence (ACoE).
  • Using IBM’s digital reinvention framework and innovation roadmap, the bank will be able to make critical strides in achieving business transformation, improving overall service delivery and creating compelling customer experiences.
  • Under ACoE, the bank will establish a data and analytics technology platform with an enterprise wide petabyte scale Big Data Lake powered by data technologies such as predictive analytics, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

Second tranche of Bharat-22 ETF for rising Rs.6000 crore.

The Finance Ministry has launched the second tranche of Bharat-22 exchange traded fund (ETF) on June 19 which will help raise up to Rs 8,400 crore from the markets.

  • The issue was opened for anchor investors on June 19 and for other institutional and retail investors the next day. The ETF follow on offer will remain open till June 22.
  • The investors would get a 2.5 per cent discount over the issue price.
  • The government aims to raise Rs 6,000 crore from this round. There is also a green shoe option of Rs 2,400 crore, subject to government approval.
  • Greenshoe option is a special provision where the bid issuer allows for oversubscription to the issue up to a certain limit/cap.

Yes Bank gets Sebi nod for custodian of securities business enhancing its market offerings

Yes Bank has received approval from market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for acting as custodian of securities.

  • Custodian of securities is a licence granted by Sebi to eligible entities allowing them to offer custodial services to financial market participants including foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs).
  • This will complement the bank’s existing capital market offerings and enable it to play a larger role in channelising domestic and foreign investments into Indian financial market

A.R. Rahman appointed Sikkim government’s brand ambassador

Famed Indian composer and singer-songwriter A.R. Rahman has been appointed the brand ambassador of the Sikkim government for a year.

  • As the government’s brand ambassador, Rahman would keep coming to the Himalayan state from time to time and promote it.
  • The 51-year-old music producer was earlier this year made Sikkim’s brand ambassador of tourism and business.

Ex-RBI Dy Governor R Gandhi joins Paytm as Advisor

One97 Communications, which runs Paytm, has appointed former RBI Deputy Governor Rama Subramaniam Gandhi as an advisor of Paytm.

  • Gandhi will bring his years of knowledge and experience on payment systems, regulations, compliance and corporate governance, the company said in a statement.
  • Gandhi was a member of the first Monetary Policy Committee. He has also been the head of two regional offices of the Reserve Bank and held a charge as the Director of the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), Hyderabad.

CEA Arvind Subramanian quits, to head back to US for research, writing

Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, who succeeded the high-profile Raghuram Rajan in the Finance Ministry in 2014, has quit the government with plans to go back to the US for research and writing.

  • Subramanian had joined as the CEA on October 16, 2014 for a period of three years after which Jaitley had requested him to continue for some more time.
  • This is the third high-level exit from the government after the departure of Raghuram Rajan as RBI Governor and the sudden resignation by NITI Aayog Deputy Chairman Arvind Panagriya.

Indian Army observes 2018 as Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty

Indian Army is observing the year 2018 as the ‘Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty’ to honour soldiers who have been disabled in line of duty, while serving the Nation and to celebrate the undying spirit of ‘Soldiering’,

  • The primary focus is towards alleviating the sufferings of these soldiers, who have done their duty with utmost dedication to the Nation and have been disabled for the life.
  • The endeavour this year is to provide a onetime financial assistance to disabled soldiers who have been boarded out from service on medical grounds and are rendered non-employable due to their medical or physical conditions.

Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Rani Rashmoni’ commissioned in Visakhapatnam

The last of the five Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) project of Indian Coast Guard ‘Rani Rashmoni’ was commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard on June 18 at Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) by Additional-Director General, Indian Coast Guard VSR Murthy.

  • So far four such ships such as ICGS Rani Abbakka, ICGS Rani Avanti Bai, ICGS Rani Durgavati and ICGS Rani Gaidinliu, have been commissioned and are in active service at various locations on the eastern seaboard.
  • ‘Rani Rashmoni’ was the last in the first phase of five FPVs.
  • The 51 metre long, 8.36 metre wide and 346-tonne ship has been designed and built by the Hindustan Ship Yard Ltd, and is equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated navigational and communication sensors and equipment.
  • ICGS Rashmoni is propelled by three MTU 40000 series diesel engines of 2,720 KW capacity each coupled with three Rolls Royce

Tamil Nadu girl Anukreethy Vas wins Miss India World 2018 title

Miss Anukreethy Vas from Tamil Nadu was declared the winner of the 55th edition of Femina Miss India 2018 pageant held at Dome, NSCI Stadium, Mumbai.

  • Miss Meenakshi Chaudhary from Haryana and Miss Shreya Rao from Andhra Pradesh bagged the first and second runner up positions respectively.
  • The 19 year old student of Chennai’s Loyola College, Anukreethy is pursuing BA in French to become an interpreter.

World Refugee Day: 20 June

World Refugee Day is observed every year by the people on 20th June in order to raise the public awareness about refugee’s situations throughout the world.

  • World Refugee Day was declared on 20th of June by the United Nations General Assembly in the Resolution 55/76 on 4th of December in 2000. It was started celebrating worldwide as an annual event from 2001 on every June 20.
  • The Theme of World Refugee Day 2018 is: “Now more than ever, we need to stand #WithRefugees”
