MCX launches ‘Cotton Mission’ for Maharashtra farmers

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has signed an MoU with the Maharashtra government to launch Cotton Mission for empowering cotton farmers in the Vidarbha region.

  • Under the mission, the exchange will partner with the Maharashtra’s agriculture department and other government agencies to work closely with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
  • It will create farmers groups and help them to connect to the exchange’s organised market network to sell their produce in a national market for better price realisation.
  • The mission will provide a platform to create a value chain with final market linkages to support thousands of cotton farmers in Akola, Amravati and Wardha.

UAE proposes to set up consulate in Hyderabad

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has proposed to set up a consulate in Hyderabad in a bid to boost the cordial relationship between Telangana and UAE.

  • Telangana government will allocate land and provide infrastructure for the consulate.
  • The Consulate General of the United States of America already has an office in Hyderabad at Paigah Palace in Begumpet.
  • Countries like Turkey and the Islamic Republic Of Iran also have offices established in Hyderabad.

Israel to gift 100 units of digital farming to Gujarat

The Government of Gujarat has received 100 units of digital farming as gift from Israel during Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s  six-day-long visit to Israel with a high-level delegation.

  • The digital farming units were presented by Netafim is an Israeli irrigation solutions providing.
  • The digital farming units have sensor technique which will help farmers utilise water and fertilizers better. The digital farming unit provides real-time data by monitoring the quality and nature of soil, weather condition, moisture in air, status of crop and other aspects related to crops.
  • The technology is cloud-based so the data can be stored for many years and made accessible at different locations and time.

Google Doodle honours P.C. Mahalanobis

Google dedicated a Doodle in honour of an Indian scientist and founder of Indian Statistical Institute, Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis on June 29 which marks his 125th birth anniversary.

  • Mahalanobis was regarded as the chief architect of Indian statistical system as well as Father of Statistical Science in India.
  • He  set up the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931 in what is now known as Kolkata along with Pramatha Nath Banerji, Nikhil Ranjan Sen and Sir RN Mukherji.
  • He was one of the members of the first Planning Commission of India.

India to save Rs 10,000 cr annually by setting default AC temp at 24 degrees

The Government agency, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has issued the guidelines to major commercial establishments to implement default temperature setting of air conditioners at 24 degree Celsius.

  • As per BEE, by keeping the air conditioner at the default (factory) temperature settings, which is at 24 degree Celsius, as much as 20 billion units, worth Rs 10,000 crores annually can be conserved.
  • The default setting will mean consumers will receive new machines with preset temperature of 24 degrees Celsius. However, a user can set the air conditioner at a lower (or higher) temperature.

NTPC ranked 25th in India’s Great Place to Work list 

State owned largest power producer of India, NTPC has been ranked 25th in India’s Great Place to Work for 2018.

  • NTPC is the only PSU among top 25. NTPC which was at 38th position last year has also been recognized as the Laureates for consistently getting featured in the list for 10 years in a row.
  • The annual Best Workplaces List of the Great Place to Work institute is considered the gold standard certification for defining, assessing and recognising great workplaces based on their people management practices.

NASA To Launch World’s Lightest Satellite Designed By Chennai Students

Four engineering students from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science near Chennai, Tamil Nadu have developed the world’s lightest satellite ‘Jaihind-1S’.

  • The satellite developed by first year students team headed by Harikrishnan KG will be launched by NASA in August.
  • The 4cm ‘cube’ satellite ‘Jaihind-1S’ has been built with a 3D printed outer casing from polylactic acid (PLA) nylon material, making it lighter than a medium sized egg, at just 33.39 grams.
  • The experimental satellite, could also be the cheapest satellite as it was built at the meagre budget of Rs 15,000.
  • The satellite was selected through the ‘Cubes in Space’ competition conducted by Colorado Space Grant consortium, NASA and idoodle-learning. It will be flown on a scientific balloon up to an altitude of 70km.

Suresh Prabhu launches Mobile App ‘ReUnite’ 

The Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu launched a mobile application “ReUnite” to trace missing and abandoned children in India.

  • The app is multiuser where parents and citizens can upload pictures of children, and provide detailed description like name, birth mark, address, report to the police station, search and identify missing kids.

  • The photographs will not be saved in the mobile phone’s physical memory.
  • Amazon Rekognition, web facial recognition service, is being used to identify missing kids. The app is available for both Android and iOS.
  • Non-government organisation Bachpan Bachao Andolan and Capgemini has developed this app.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

China Set To become Largest 5G market by 2025: Report

According to a report released by Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA) and Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), China is expected to become the world’s largest 5G market by the year 2025.

  • As per the report, the country will account for 430 million 5G connections, or one-third of the global total by 2025.
  • All three Chinese mobile operators (China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom) are currently conducting live 5G trials as part of a multi-year plan that includes research and development, and a network deployment strategy with a view to a large scale commercial launch by 2020.

Australia Passes Foreign Interference Laws

Australia’s parliament has passed two new laws aimed at preventing foreign interference in the country.

  • The “Espionage and Foreign Interference Bill” introduces new spying offences, updated sabotage offences and a new offence relating to the theft of trade secrets on behalf of a foreign government.
  • The “Foreign Influence Transparency Scheme Bill” will create a register for individuals or entities undertaking activities on behalf of “foreign principals”.
  • The laws criminalise covert, deceptive or threatening actions that are intended to interfere with democratic processes or provide intelligence to overseas governments.

N Korea named ‘Worst Human Trafficking Country’

The US State Department’s annual “2018 Trafficking in Persons Report” has designated North Korea as one of the worst human trafficking nations for the 16th consecutive year as it does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so..

  • North Korea has been put in the lowest Tier 3 of its classification of countries, together with China, Russia and Iran.
  • It used proceeds from state-sponsored forced labour to fund government functions as well as other illicit activity. The North Korea government also continued to use forced labour in prison camps and labour training centres and encouraged forced labours of students and exported forced labour to foreign organisations.
  • Meanwhile, South Korea was placed at highest category of Tier 1 countries for the 16th straight year, along with other advanced nations like the US, Britain, France and Canada.
  • India continued to be placed in Tier-2 category since 2011 which suggests that the government of the country does not fully meet the minimum standards, but is making significant efforts to bring itself into compliance with those standards.

Asia’s 1st Patent Arbitration Centre to Open in Tokyo

Asia’s first Arbitration Centre specialised in intellectual property is slated to open in Tokyo in September to resolve the growing number of disputes in the region.

  • The International Arbitration Centre in Tokyo (IACT) is set to have around a dozen arbitrators from around the world, who would try to resolve disputes within a period of one year.

Abu Dhabi ‘smartest city’ in Middle East: Study

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has topped the list of “smart cities” in the Middle East and Africa, according to a report by McKinsey Global Institute titled “Smart Cities: Digital Solutions for a More Livable Future”.

  • The report covering 50 international cities views how cities all over the world use technology to improve the quality of life.
  • With a rating of 18.4, Abu Dhabi ranked the first in the region ahead of Dubai, which was placed the second with a rating of 17.3.


BANKING NEWS

DBS Bank to launch subsidiary in India in October

DBS Bank of Singapore is set to launch its India subsidiary in October, the second foreign bank in the country to convert its local operations into a wholly-owned entity.

  • State Bank of Mauritius was the first to open a local subsidiary in India last year, after RBI came out with the regulations in 2013. DBS said the setting up of the local subsidiary will be completed once RBI gives the final approval.
  • The new subsidiary has been registered as DBS Bank India Ltd. From 12 branches at present, DBS is expected to expand to 40-50 branches across 30 cities and about 80 banking outlets once the subsidiary starts operations.

Gehlot Elected IKF Chief for Next 4 Years

The International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) has appointed Janardan Singh Gehlot  as the President of the federation for the next four years.

  • The announcement was made during the Annual General Congress (AGC) of the IKF in Dubai on June 29.

Indian-origin lawyer appointed to Singapore Supreme Court

An Indian-origin leading intellectual property lawyer of Singapore, Dedar Singh Gill, has been appointed as a judicial commissioner of the country’s Supreme Court.

  • Gill, 59, has been appointed by President Halimah Yacob for a period of two years beginning August 1.

Google Launches New Online Ad Tool for Small Businesses

In a bid to help small businesses connect with relevant customers online, Google has unveiled “Smart” campaigns.

  • Smart campaign will allow small businesses to create ads in minutes.
  • The tech giant has also changed the name of its lineup of ad products “Google AdWords” which will now be known as “Google Ads”.


OBITUARY

‘Seinfield’ Actor Stanley Anderson Passes Away

Noted Hollywood actor Stanley Anderson passed away after he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He was 78.

  • Stanley was best known for his role as Judge Vandelay in Seinfield, an American television sitcom, General Slocum in Spider-Man (2002) and for playing Drew Carry’s father on ABC’s The Drew Carey Show.

12th Statistics Day celebrated on 29th June, 2018 

In recognition of the notable contributions made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics, statistical system and economic planning, Government of India in 2007, has designated June 29 as the “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Days to be celebrated every year at the National level.

  • On the occasion, Vice President of India released a commemorative coin of Rs 125 and circulation coin of Rs 5 denomination as a mark of respect  to Prof. Mahalanobis on the closing ceremony of his  125th Birth Anniversary  at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
  • 29th June, 2017 marked the beginning of the 125th year of birth of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis
