Nation remembers Rabindranath Tagore on his 157th birth anniversary
May 7 2018 marks the 157th birth anniversary of India’s first Nobel Award winner Rabindranath Tagore. He was born in 1861 in Calcutta.
- Tagore was given a nickname by Mahatma Gandhi and was called Gurudev with love and respect. He contributed in reshaping Bengali literature and played a catalyst in the nationalist movement with his poems and music.
Venkaiah Naidu Begins 3 Central American Nations Visit From Guatemala
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is on a three-nation visit to the Latin american countries of Guatemala, Panama and Peru. This is the vice president’s first foreign visit after assuming office.
- During the week long tour, the vice president will have over twenty five engagements including meetings and discussions with Presidents, Vice Presidents and presiding officers of legislatures of these three countries, and hold delegation-level talks.
Centre approves opening of 100 additional One Stop centers in nine states to help violence affected women.
The Centre has approved setting up of 100 additional One Stop Centres in 9 states to help violence affected women.
- The states are Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
- The purpose of these centres is to facilitate integrated services for violence affected women such as police assistance, medical aid, psycho-social counselling and legal aid.
- The Ministry of Women and Child Development has so far set up 182 Centres under the scheme since April, 2015.
NITI Aayog and Google sign SoI to help grow AI ecosystem in India
NITI Aayog has joined hands with Google to foster growth in India’s artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning ecosystem by working together on several initiatives in the two areas.
- A Statement of Intent (SoI) was signed to this effect by Ms. Anna Roy, Advisor, NITI Aayog and Shri Rajan Anandan, Vice President, India and South East Asia, Google in the presence of the Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog.

NITI Aayog seeks World Bank’s help to prevent fraud in healthcare insurance programme
The NITI Aayog has sought the World Bank’s assistance to provide it information and expertise on fraud detection and prevention to ensure no embezzlement of funds takes place in the Centre’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM).
Centre signs $200mn loan agreement with World Bank for POSHAN Abhiyaan
The Centre has signed a loan agreement worth 200 million dollar with the World Bank for the National Nutrition Mission -POSHAN Abhiyaan.
- The loan approved will support the first phase scale up to 315 districts across all states and union territories (UTs) and help in achieving its goal of reducing stunting in children upto 6 years of age from 38.4 per cent to 25 per cent by 2022.
- The POSHAN scheme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2018 aims to ensure holistic development and adequate nutrition for pregnant women, mothers and children.

Putin sworn in for another six years as Russian President
Vladimir Putin took the oath of office on May 7 for a fourth term as Russia’s president.
- Putin, who has ruled Russia as prime minister or president for more than 18 years since 1999, was re-elected as President for another 6 years after 70 percent voters backed him in an election in March 2018.
Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha gets extension till 2019
Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha has been given one year extension. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his extension to the post till 12th of June 2019.
- In May 2015, Mr Sinha was appointed as cabinet secretary for a fixed two-year term.

India Pockets 50 Medals to Top 3rd South Asian Junior Athletics Championships
Indian junior athletes clinched overall title in the 3rd South Asian Junior Athletics Championships (SAJAC) which concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
- At the end of two-day meet, they bagged 20 gold, 22 silver and eight bronze medals to put India on top of the medals table.
- Hosts Sri Lanka (12-10-19) and Pakistan (0-1-1) took second and third positions.
Gagan Narang, Pooja Ghatkar win silver medal in 10m air rifle event
Olympic medallist Gagan Narang and young Pooja Ghatkar clinched silver medal in the 10m air rifle mixed team event in the Grand Prix of Liberation International Shooting Competition in Pilsen, Czech Republic.
- The Indian pair came close to overtaking Jurate Cesynaite and Karolis Girulis for the gold, before missing the target by 1.3 point.
- They topped the qualification with 833.2 points, with Pooja shooting 413.5 and Gagan 419.7.
