Directions(1-4): A sentence divided into four parts (A), (B), (C) and (D) is given. The errors are in two parts of the sentence. Determine the parts which require correction and mark it as your answer. If the sentence is correct as it is, mark the answer as (E) i.e. ‘No error’.

  1. One of the things I do as an advocate are talking publicly about my mental health, (A)/ which means discussing my conditions very openly, (B)/ the way it impact my day to day life (C)/ and how I experience things. (D)

    A-B
    B-C
    C-D
    A-C
    No error
    Option D
In part A instead of the plural ‘are’, the singular verb ‘is’ should be used to maintain subject-verb agreement. The subject is ‘one of the things’ which is singular.
In part C, the use of the pronoun ‘it’ is incorrect. It should be ‘they’ as it is referring to a plural noun ‘they’.

  2. Last year I decided my frothing youth was over (A)/ and the whole thing was too juvenile for me (B)/ but this year I decide (C)/ I were going to go again. (D)
    A-B
    B-C
    C-D
    D-A
    No error
    Option C
In part C, instead of the present tense ‘decide’, the present continuous tense ‘decided’ should be used.
In part D, instead of using the second person singular ‘were’, the first person singular ‘was’ should be used.

  3. Mine mother is a brilliant cook (A)/ and like generations of Lebanese women before her, (B)/ feeding the family (C)/ is a integral part of her life. (D)
    A-B
    B-C
    C-D
    D-A
    No error
    Option D
In part A, ‘Mine’ is incorrect as it is a possessive pronoun and must be replaced by a possessive adjective i.e. ‘My’.
In part D, instead of the article ‘a’, the article ‘an’ should precede ‘integral’ as it starts with the vowel ‘i’.

  4. Rottnest is far away from the mainland, (A)/ not literal, of course; (B)/ as the dog flies, the island is about as far away from Fremantle (C)/ as Fremantle is from the city. (D)
    A-B
    B-C
    C-D
    D-A
    No error
    Option B
In part B, instead of the adjective ‘literal’ meaning free from exaggeration or distortion, we need to use the adverb ‘literally’ meaning in a literal manner or sense.
In part C, the phrase ‘as the dog flies’ is incorrect. The correct phrase is ‘as the crow flies’ which means in a straight line.

  5. Direction: The given question has a statement with two highlighted words/ phrases. Choose the most appropriate option from the given alternatives which can help replace the highlighted words to make the statement grammatically and logically correct. If the given sentence is correct as it is, mark ‘no correction required’ as the answer.

We considered our defeat to be an (adoration), since we’d easily (bitten) this team last season.

    aberration, beaten
    peculiarity, biting
    disease, vagary
    oddity, munched
    No correction required
    Option A
The statement talks about how the team was easily defeated which was an unexpected event. Since the article ‘an’ precedes ‘adoration’, it is evident that a word beginning with a vowel should replace it. Only options A and D can be used under this condition. Both ‘aberration’ and ‘oddity’ refer to a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected, typically an unwelcome one. ‘Bitten’ means using the teeth in order to inflict injury on something and is incorrect. ‘Munched’ is synonymous to ‘bitten’. But ‘beaten’ from option A means having been defeated and is the correct replacement for the second word. So, option A is correct.

  6. Directions(6-8): Out of the five statements given below, only one is grammatically correct. Choose the correct statement as your answer.

  7. There are also a lodge in the vicinity, with similar amenities, yet set away from the hustle and bustle of the hotel.
She rarely smiles; indeed, I have seen her smile only once or twice since I came.

The winter sun can be seen rising over the Cenaean promontory to toil across the expanse to Mount Oeta and disappear behind it in a bank of fiery cloud.
Robert Peel was entitle in return to call upon the house to relinquish the protection which they enjoyed.
    Option B
Option A: Here instead of plural verb ‘are’ there should be ‘is’ as the subject is singular.
Option C: Here the use of preposition ‘from’ is incorrect. Instead it should be ‘on’ to make it grammatically correct.
Option D: Incorrect phrase ‘toil across’ is used here, instead it should be ‘toil over’ which means To work continually, diligently, and strenuously to complete something.
Option E: It should be ‘entitled’ in place of ‘entitle’ to rectify it.

  8. As gold and silver inflows from the Americas into Europe were being minted into coins, there were a resulting rise in inflation.
This led economist Henry Thornton in 1802 to assuming that more money equals more inflation and that an increase in the money supply does not necessarily mean an increase in economic output.
A look at the assumptions and calculations underlying the QTM, as well as its relationship to monetarism and ways the theory has been challenged is unnerving.

The arguments point out that the velocities of circulation depends on consumer and business spending impulses, which cannot be constant.
    Option C
The error in the 1st sentence is the use of “were” after comma because the subject “a resulting rise” is singular. “Was” will be used instead.
The error in the 2nd statement is the use of “to assuming” because the sentence is not in continuous tense, it is inde􀁽nite form. “Assume” will be used in place of “to
    assuming”.
The error in the 4th sentence is the use of preposition “along” as “along” depicts a particular direction while the sentence is talking about a relationship between two
parties. Hence, “between” will be the right word.
The error in the 5th sentence is the use of ‘velocities’ and ‘depends’. It will either be velocities of circulation depend or velocity of circulation depends.

  9. Stock investors may not be generally aware of the Japanese yen and the U.S. stock market have a high level of inverse correlation.
If the yen is rising, there is a good chance that stocks will be languishing or falling.
Conversely, if the yen is falling in value, stocks will likely have been rising.
The relationship isn’t a perfect mirror image, which is why traders find it useful.
The yen is also a so-called “safe haven” investment across times of geopolitical risks, which tends to boost its value, and while stocks are hurt by uncertainty.
    Option D
The error in the 1st sentence is the use of “of” preposition as the sentence is trying to depict a fact that a person is not aware of. If “of” preposition is used, the sentence should be in continuous tense, “have” should be replaced by “having” or “of” should be replaced by “that”.
The error in the 2nd sentence is the use of “languishing or falling” because the sentence talks about future tense. The correlation structure is ‘if this is happening at the moment, this will happen as a result’. Hence, ‘will languish or fall’ will be used.
The error in the 3rd sentence is the use of “have been” because the sentence is using future progressive tense. “Be” will be used in place of “have been”.
The error in the 5th sentence is the use of preposition “across” as “across” means beyond and the sentence means to state something that happens throughout a given time period. “During” will be used.
