Mixed Reasoning Questions Set 7

Directions (1-5): Study the following information carefully and answer the questions that follow.
A country has the following types of traffic signals.

2 green lights = turn left;
1 green light = turn right;
2 red lights = stop;
1 red light = go at 40 kmph speed;
2 yellow lights = go at 60 kmph speed;
1 yellow light = go at 30 kmph speed.

A person starts driving from a point in North direction and he encounters the following traffic signals:
Starting point – 1 yellow light;
After 24 minutes, 1st signal – 2 yellow and 2 green lights;
After half an hour, 2nd signal-1 red & 2 green lights;
After 15 minutes, 3rd signal – 2 red lights.

  1. Find the total distance he covered after the last signal.
    A) 46 km
    B) 52 km
    C) 50 km
    D) 55 km
    E) 49 km
    View Answer
     Option B
    Starting in North direction: 1 yellow light means 30 km/hr
    So 24 minutes at 30km/hr, means covers 12 km
    Next, 2 yellow and 2 green lights, means turn left and at 60 km/hr (half an hour)
    So now distance covered = 60 * ½ = 30 km
    Now for next 15 minutes, 1 red & 2 green lights, means turned left and drove at 40 km/hr, so covered 40 * 15/60 = 10 Km
    So total distance = 12+30+10 = 52 km
  2. If a person encounters the first two signals as same as given,
    third signal as 1 green light and 1 yellow and
    fourth signal as 2 red lights, then in which direction is he driving when he stopped?
    A) East
    B) South
    C) West
    D) North
    E) Cannot be determined
    View Answer
     Option C
    Explanation:
    Starts in north. Encounters – 2 green (left), 2 green (left) and 1 green (right)
    So finally in west direction.
  3. If instead of starting in North direction, the man starts in East direction, then what is his position (approximately) with respect to the starting point?
    A) 32 km directly to the east of starting point
    B) 29 km away to the north-west of the starting point
    C) 40 km directly to the west of starting point
    D) 30 km away to the south-east of the starting point
    E) Cannot be determined
    View Answer
     Option D
    Explanation:
    East – 12 km, turn right – 30 km, again right – 10 km and stopped. So
  4. If after the first signal, the second signal were 1 green and 2 yellow lights, what would be the final position of the person?
    A) 25 km to the south and 42 km to the east
    B) 57 km directly to the north-west
    C) 27 km to the north and 30 km to the west
    D) 30 km to the north and 27 km to the west
    E) None of these
    View Answer
     Option C
    Explanation:
    From 1st question:
    Starting in North direction: 1 yellow light means 30 km/hr
    So 24 minutes at 30km/hr, means covers 12 km
    Next, 2 yellow and 2 green lights, means turn left and at 60 km/hr (half an hour)
    So now distance covered = 60 * ½ = 30 km
    Next change of lights at second signal:
    Now for next 15 minutes, 1 green & 2 yellow lights, means turned right and drove at 60 km/hr, so covered 60 * 15/60 = 15 km
    So we get:
  5. If after the second signal,
    3rd signal: 2 green and 2 yellow lights,
    After 45 minutes, 4th signal: 2 red lights
    what would be the final position of the person?
    A)12 km to the south and 12 km to the east
    B) 45 km directly to the north-east
    C) 4 km to the north and 30 km to the west
    D) 2 km to the north and 15 km to the east
    E) None of these
    View Answer
     Option D
    Explanation:
    From question 1:
    Starting in North direction: 1 yellow light means 30 km/hr
    So 24 minutes at 30km/hr, means covers 12 km
    Next, 2 yellow and 2 green lights, means turn left and at 60 km/hr (half an hour)
    So now distance covered = 60 * ½ = 30 km
    Now for next 15 minutes, 1 red & 2 green lights, means turned left and drove at 40 km/hr, so covered 40 * 15/60 = 10 Km
    NEXT:
    For next 45 minutes – 2 green and 2 yellow lights – left turn at 60 km/hr so covered = 45/60 * 60 = 45 km. Next he stops.
    So we get:

Directions (6-8): In each of the following questions, a question is followed by two statements numbered I and II. Read both the statements and answer accordingly.

  1. Out of A, B, C, D, E and F all having different heights, who is the shortest?
    Statement I: B and E are taller than C. A is taller than D who is shorter than B.
    Statement II: F is taller than C who is shorter than A. E and F are taller than D.
    A) If the data in statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question.
    B) If the data in statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question.
    C) If the data either in statement I alone or statement II alone are sufficient to answer the question.
    D) If the data given in both I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
    E) If the data in both the statements I and II together are necessary to answer the question.

    Statement I: There are 3 people sitting between D and E. E is immediate neighbor of C. D is not sitting at any extreme ends.
    Statement II: E is sitting adjacent to F who is somewhere sitting right of C. There is 1 person sitting between B and E. D is sitting to the left of C.

     Option B
    Explanation:
    Statement I does not tell the gender of Ravi, so brother/sister of Raj
    From statement II, Kavita is daughter of Raj and Sakshi(mother). Ravi is the brother-in-law of Sakshi, so he is brother of Raj.
