Direction (1-5): In each of the following questions a short passage is given with one of the lines in the passage missing and represented by a blank. Select the best out of the five answer choices given, to make the passage complete and coherent.

1. India’s blue chip IT sector is experiencing rough weather. Faced with a tightening visa regime in the US and increasing industry-wide automation, top IT companies are taking drastic measures. This includes cutting staff strength, slowing down new hiring, initiating mass re-training programmes. All of this comes on the heels of a McKinsey report that almost half of India’s 37 lakh IT services workforce will become irrelevant over the next three to four years. (…………………………).
There’s no denying the global economy is undergoing a significant change. Cutting-edge technology and automation are ushering in a digital revolution the likes of which humankind has never experienced before.
A) In such a scenario, only those countries that are able to successfully skill their workforces for the future will be able to ride the digital wave.
B) But the new digital economy demands IT innovators, not mere service providers.
C) Wipro’s move to sack around 500 employees and Cognizant’s decision to reduce its employee count by 5% highlight the carnage in India’s IT sector.
D) A majority of the workforce can’t imbibe the skills required for increasing use of digital technologies.
E) India should dismantle the oppressive licence raj that still exists in this sector even as it has become history in India’s product markets.
View Answer
Option C
Explanation: carnage – the killing of a large number of people. Sentence before the blank talks about the report that it shows that there will be a decline in IT services workforce.
So C) option aptly fills the blank saying that the recent Wipro’s and Cognizant’s decision highlight this carnage.
D) option will not fill the blank, If it is filled there, it seems that the report has pointed out this fact. Then it should have been written that “report also points out that a majority of the workforce….” When we read the paragraph with option D) fitting the blank, something appears to be missing there.
Option E) tells about an effective measure to be taken for IT sector. But measures are given at end not in middle of paragraph.
2. Pakistan officially announced that it had successfully tested, for the first time, a nuclear-capable-submarine launched cruise missile (SLCM) – the Babur 3- from a submerged platform on Monday (Jan 9). This is a major techno-strategic achievement in the naval domain and has elicited considerable notice. (………………………………………………….). Be that as it may, the official statement noted that the “Babur-3 SLCM in land-attack mode, is capable of delivering various types of payloads and will provide Pakistan with a credible second strike capability, augmenting deterrence.”
A) It was also added that testing an SLCM of 450 km range was in keeping with Pakistan’s quest for ‘credible second-strike capability’ and ‘credible minimum deterrence.’
B) Having acquired the land-based variant of the Babur , it was expected that the sea-based variant of the same would be soon unveiled
C) However aspersions are being cast about the authenticity of this ‘success’ and the parentage of the missile.
D) This determination to acquire a submarine launched nuclear weapon capability was evident for the last decade
E) The waters of the Indian Ocean will get roiled by the Babur 3 and regional WMD stability will become more brittle.
View Answer
Option C
Explanation: The sentence before blank says that it is a major achievement
The sentence after black says that what it may be, but official statement tells that “Babur-3 SLCM in land-attack mode is capable.
So blank will be filled by option C, which is doubting about the authenticity of this ‘success’.
3. The demonetisation decision may have its supporters and detractors, but no political leader or political party can convincingly speak about the need to eliminate corruption without resolving to pass the comprehensive electoral reforms bill that has been pending before Parliament for the last two decades. This is so because the pernicious nexus between politicians and political parties on the one hand, and black money on the other, is the principal cause of all corruption in India.
If those who are supposed to make laws against corruption are themselves the products of a corrupt system, how can the rest of society be clean? (…………………………..). When candidates illegally spend many times the prescribed limit on elections, their first priority is to milk the state to recoup their ‘investments’.
A) When parties take money in cash from ‘unidentified’ donors, they work for tax evaders
B) India scored zero out of hundred on implementation and disclosure of political party and candidate financing.
C) The truth quite bluntly is that most political parties and politicians have no reason to change the current system because they are the biggest beneficiaries of it.
D) If there is an international reward for lip service on the need to bring greater financial transparency to transactions of political parties, India would probably be at number one!
E) The time has thus come to turn the spotlight on politicians, who speak about eliminating corruption the most.
View Answer
Option A
Explanation: The sentence before blank is talking about the law makers i.e. the politicians and the political parties. The sentence after blank tells about – when candidates (politicians) spend money, they do so to regain (recoup) their investments. to milk – means exploiting
Option A) also tells about the political parties that when take cash from donors, they work for tax evaders. Tax evaders means who escape paying tax
E) option cannot fill the given black because it starts with – The time has thus come to..
4. Most faiths regard compassion as one of the greatest virtues. Gautama Buddha taught that to get enlightened, one must develop compassion and wisdom. Compassion is the basis for Ahimsa, or non-violence.
Add self-control, charity and daya, suggest Hindu texts. In the Bible, compassion means to feel sympathy and to have mercy and pity. (…………………………………..). Islam teaches us love and compassion for every human being.
A) This is because all living beings are interconnected. Being compassionate is to be fully human.

C) Compassion follows the psychological law of reciprocity. Like mercy, compassion is twice blessed.
D) The good news is, it can be cultivated and maintained through a regular practice of meditation.
E) None can fit the blank.
View Answer

5. When the stars come down to earth, they abuse those who work in their homes. The founder of Book My Bai, a startup that connects domestic workers and employers, has gone public with the torture that many Bollywood celebrities inflicted on their “help”. While the agency has singled out movie industry types as “horrendous”, and refuses to cater to them anymore, such behaviour is more pervasive. It cuts across income groups, rural and urban settings.
(…………………………………..) But others dehumanise them – where they sit, where they eat from, what they use is all marked out to separate them. Even many buildings have separate entrances for “maids, drivers and pets”.
A) The Indian elite has a bad conscience about the terms of the deal even as it struggles with new expectations.
B) There’s a difference between the segregating practices and the open cruelty of the cases.
C) The agency has been trying to formalise hiring, and provide dignity to the labour force by organising India’s hugely fragmented domestic help sector.
D) Some might give generous wages or help their maids and drivers in feudal, charitable ways, a few may even encourage unionisation of domestic workers.
E) The maids, who are associated with BookMyBai, do not have to share any part of their salary with the organisation.
View Answer
Option D
Explanation: single out is a phrase, means – choosing someone or something. Horrendous means – unpleasant
The paragraph tells – the agency Book My Bai has said that movie industry is unpleasant or horrifying. and now the agency will not cater to their needs (connecting domestic workers and employers)
The sentence after blank says that – but we dehumanise them (the workers)…We treat them different. Sentence starts with but so a sentence which is in favor of workers should fit the blank.
