Directions(1-4): In the following question, a sentence with two blanks is given, indicating that something has been omitted. The sentence is followed by two columns, I and II, each carrying three words. One or more than one of the three words mentioned in column I will the first blank. Similarly, one or more than one of the three words mentioned in column II will the second blank. You have to identify the correct pair(s) of words that would fill ll the blanks to make the sentence grammatically correct and meaningful.

  1. India’s west coast sees __I__ cyclonic activity than the eastern coast __II__ the Bay of Bengal.
    I.
    a. enough
    b. more
    c. less
    II.
    d. alongside
    e. across
    f. along
    a-f & b-e
    a-e & c-d
    a-f & c-e
    c-f
    a-d
    Option D
“Than” indicates that the “west coast” and “east coast” are being compared here. so, it would be either ‘less’ or ‘more’.
‘Along’ is used to state someone or something is moving in one direction. ‘Across’ is used to state on the other side of someone or something. As a preposition, “alongside” means “close beside”, “next to” or “together with”. “Alongside is also used as an adverb where it means “along the side of” or “next to something”.

  2. Our greenhouse gas emissions have created a __I__ cycle of feedback loops __II__ climate change.
    I.
    a. vicious
    b. immoral
    c. continuous
    II.
    d. augmenting
    e. reinforcing
    f. establishes
    a-f & b-e
    a-d
    a-f & c-e
    c-f
    a-e & c-d
    Option E
Immoral means not conforming to accepted standards of morality. This adjective cannot be used describe nouns that do not have the morality in the first place (cycle of feedback loops). So, part b is wrong. The second blank requires a verb in its continuous form. So, part f is also wrong.
“Feedback loops” suggests that the process is continuous. The nature of this process can be vicious due to climate change. So, both a & c are correct. Reinforce means to strengthen or support (an object or substance), especially with additional material. Augmenting means to make (something) greater by adding to it; increase. Both these verbs indicate the ‘cycle’ adds to ‘climate change’

  3. If only Indians knew Babur better, those not __I__ by bigotry might find a person worthy of __II__.

    I.
    a. blinded
    b. overcome
    c. obscuring
    II.
    d. esteemed
    e. praise
    f. admiration

    a-f & b-e
    a-e & c-d
    a-f & c-e
    c-f
    a-d
    Option A
Blank I requires a verb in its participle form. ‘Obscuring’ is in continuous form. So, part c is wrong, negating options B, C and D.
Blank II requires a noun. But part d (esteemed) is a verb. So, any combination containing ‘d’ will be incorrect, which is the case with option E. Hence, the correct answer is A.

  4. Almond milk is low in potassium and phosphorous __I__ is why, it is a suitable alternative for people __II__ chronic kidney disease.
    I.
    a. which
    b. that
    c. because
    II.
    d. with
    e. by
    f. from
    a-f & b-e
    a-e & c-d
    a-f & c-e
    c-f
    a-d
    Option E
‘Because’ is always followed by a noun, which is not the given case. The parts before and after blank I are independent by themselves, so they wouldn’t need that’. So, in column I only part a – ‘which’ is a correct-fit.
‘From’ shows an origin point. “By” is used to tell the proprietor or medium of an act. “Chronic kidney disease” is a condition, not an origin point, which is neither the correct preposition for blank. Note that the correct preposition for II blank is ‘with’.

  5. Directions(5-8): In the following question, two columns are given, containing a connector and three phrases each. In the first column, the phrases are A, B and C and in the second column, the phrases are D, E and F. You have to make meaningful sentences using the connectors and from the phrases of both the columns. There are five options, four of which display the sequence(s) in which the phrases with the connectors can be joined to form a grammatically and contextually correct sentence.

  6. Either…or
    I.
    (A) This restaurant has the best kitchen in town
    (B) You can drive your car to the grocery store
    (C) He followed them into the shrubs
    II
    (D) their staff are quite rude
    (E) ride your bike
    (F) did they qualify for the football team.
    B-E
    B-D and C-E
    A-F, B-D and C-E
    B-D and A-F
    None of these
    Option A
We use either… or… to connect items which are the same grammatical type, e.g. words, phrases, clauses:
    a) We can either pre- or post-date the document. I don’t mind. (connecting prefixes)

  7. Not only…but also
    I.
    (A) Was it raining all day at the wedding
    (B) She can have tea
    (C) He waited impatiently for the call
    II
    (D) she never called him back
    (E) she can have coffee
    (F)the band was late.
    A-D
    B-D and C-E
    A-F
    B-D and A-F
    None of these
    Option C
To add emphasis, we can use not only at the beginning of a clause. When we do this, we invert the subject and the verb: Not only will they paint the outside of the house but also the inside. Part A mentions that it has been raining all day and when we look at part F we can realize that it adds to the misery of the situation by the band being late. So A and F make a pair. We can thus negate option A. Part B talks about a beverage namely; tea and we see that part E also mentions a beverage coffee. Thus B and E make a pair.

  8. Neither…nor
    I.
    (A) He loves fish tacos
    (B) Brad came to dinner with us
    (C) He did not eat the cake himself
    II
    (D) He did not let others eat it
    (E) We had a three-course meal
(F)We all agreed; it was a magnificent evening
    C-F
    B-D and C-E
    A-F
    C-D
    None of these
    Option D

  9. Such…that
    I.
    (A) The old woman cannot walk
    (B) It was a quick meteor storm
    (C) I didn’t know about that
    II
    (D) She cannot talk
    (E) it passed by in one week.
    (F)until quite recently.
    C-F
    B-E
    A-F
    C-D
    None of these
    Option B

  10. Directions(9-10): In the following question, multiple sentences have been given. Each sentence has been divided into a few parts which may or may not carry an error. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number corresponding to that part and the sentence in which it is, will be your answer. If the given sentences carry no error, mark ‘All are correct’ as your answer. Ignore the errors of punctuation if any.

    B. These contrasting values (1)/ and political allegiances demonstrate the (2)/ lack of any necessary correspondence between (3)/ elite methodology, state theory and political values. (4)

    C-4 & A-2
    A-2 & B-2
    C-4
    B-4
    All are correct
    Option A
In sentence C, the error is because of the incorrect form of the verb ‘retard’. We need a participle here to maintain parallelism with ‘driving’. Hence, ‘retard’ must be replaced with ‘retarding’ to form a grammatically correct sentence.
In sentence A, the error is because of the incorrect use of the verb ‘issue’. A participle is required after ‘had’. Hence, ‘issue’ should be replaced with ‘issued’ to form a grammatically correct sentence.

  12. A. Comparing many countries (1)/ is susceptible to statistical analysis, (2)/ which helps eliminate possible (3)/ sources of selection bias and spuriousness. (4)
