Reasoning: Puzzles and Arrangements Set 39

Puzzles and Arrangements for IBPS PO, RBI Grade B, NICL, Dena Bank PO PGDBF, BOI, OBC SO, Bank of Baroda and other competitive exams.

Directions (1 – 5): Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.

There are 12 children – A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L who live in a building with 5 floors (Numbered 1 to 5). There are 3 flats on each floor from left to right numbered 1 to 3. Immediate right of flat 2 means flat 3. Flat above flat means same flat number of above floors. There are 3 flats empty in this building. There can be only 1 flat empty on any floor. Also same flat number cannot be empty on any of the floors i.e. if Flat number 1 is empty on floor number 1, than flat 1 of any other floor cannot be empty. They all have got different marks in a class test. They all like different colors – Yellow, Pink, Red, Green, Orange, Black, Brown, White, Blue, Violet, Purple, Grey.

K lives on flat number 1 of floor number 3. One who likes red color lives somewhere in the flat which is above K’s flat. One person lives between the one who likes red color and G who has got 96 marks. A likes green color who lives just below G’s flat. One of the flats on which A lives is empty but that is not immediate left of A’s flat. The one who likes violet color lives on the flat 2nd to right of K.

There are 2 floors between H who got 72 marks and the one who got 85 marks. H lives above the one who got 85 marks. H does not like red color. J likes purple color and lives immediate right of the one who has got 85 marks. L and J live on same floor. L likes pink color and has got 9 marks more than F. There are 2 flats between L and an empty flat. F and the one who likes orange color lives on the same floor which is either floor number 1 or 2. One flat is empty on that floor. There is one empty flat between the one who got 61 marks and the one who likes yellow color. The one who got 61 marks is above the one who likes yellow color. The one who has got 55 marks lives on floor number 1. F has got 25 marks less than D who does not live on top floor. C and empty flat are on same floor.

I lives on one of the flats on the floor on which G lives. The one who likes grey color lives immediate right of I. The one who likes white color lives just above the one who likes blue color. The one who likes brown color lives below the one who likes blue color such that no one lives between them. E and F lives on same floor. E has got 15 marks more than A. C lives on a floor on which one flat is empty. One of the children on same floor as one liking blue has got 50% marks obtained by G. The one who got 82 marks lives on one of the floors above the floor of one who got 90 marks.

  1. What is the total number of marks got by G and the one who likes yellow color?
    A) 164
    B) 126
    C) 159
    D) Other than those in options
    E) 148
    View Answer
     Option C
    Explanation:

First make 2 possibilities with red on 5th floor 1st flat and second – red on 4th floor 1st flat. Next place G(96) and then A green. Now 2nd left flat of A is empty. So one possibility cancels out. So–

L and J on same floor Now 2 flats between L and empty. See in both arrangements L cannot be placed anywhere in 1st arrangement. In 2nd it is 1st floor 1st flat
Now: F and the one who likes orange color lives on the same floor which is either floor number 1 or 2. One flat is empty on that floor. Now 2nd floor, 3rd flat will have to be empty because same flat number cannot be empty on any floors.
So these on floor no 2.
On any floor, only 1 flat can be empty. so 3rd empty flat is either 5th floor 2nd flat orr 3rd floor 2nd flat.
Now: There is one empty flat between the one who got 61 marks and the one who likes yellow color. The one who got 61 marks is above the one who likes yellow color. So only possibility: 61 – red and K – yellowNow see: I lives on one of the flats on the floor on which G lives. The one who likes grey color lives immediate right of I. F and the one who likes orange color lives on the same floor which is either floor number 1 or 2. According to this 3rd floor 2nd flat is empty because I and Grey are immediate on floor 5.Next: The one who likes white color lives just above the one who likes blue color. The one who likes brown color lives below the one who likes blue color such that no one lives between them. Only possibility of them on flat number 2 as:So orange – 2nd floor, flat 1 and F – 2nd floor, flat 2. Also I – 5th floor, flat 2. and grey  – 5th floor, flat 3. And then E and F lives on same floor. C lives on a floor on which one flat is empty. So E – orange. C – Violet (76). F = 85-25 = 60, L= 60+9 = 69. D does not live on top floor. The one who has got 55 marks lives on floor number 1. A = 50% of 96 = 48. Final:
  2. Who lives on flat number 2 of floor number 2?
    A) D

          2. Mam kya agar L ke 2 flats above empty flat h to kya ye hamesha vertically count hoga..kya horizontally flats above flat me ni ayenge.pls tell

          3. There are 3 flats on each floor from left to right numbered 1 to 3. Immediate right of flat 2 means flat 3.

See this. So that cant be horizontal

  2. AVI™ (Sinchen loveR)

  3. disqus_GGhLszD1TB

In 2nd puzzle there is condition that C and F does not have birthday in same month then how can they have birthday in June ?If I’m not wrong, the correct arrangement should have been like this G H
    A I
    D F
    E B
    C J

mam first wala pussle to samja dijiye kha se shuru kre …table se smj nhi aa rha …:)))

        1. K ko place karo phle

          Then red above K hai
          so 4th floor 1st flat OR 5th floor 1st flat – 2 possibilities here

Now place G(96), then A green
Then 1 flat empty in floor of A, but not immediate left

So here one possibility cancels out

          Proceed

      2. @Shubhra_AspirantsZone:disqus There are 2 flats between L and an empty flat likha h toh vacant floor should be in1st flat of second floor .above toh nhi likha h wha then why?
wha upar 4th floor m vacant rakhne ka jya matlab h , it is not even mentioned above at all.

        1. That is written intentionally.
          See 2 flats between.
          Means cannot be horizontal right?

If 2 floors are in between then it could be any flats on those 2 floors.
But 2 flats in between will mean same numbered flat on those 2 floors

          1. @Shubhra_AspirantsZone:disqus Mam sorry, but i didn’t get your point here
are you saying if , we would have put vacant in 1st flat of 2nd floor then there would be two vacant seat ,which is not a possibility so you put vacant in 4th floor. one more question, why you put L in 1st flat mam 🙁
            This is so damn confusing.

        yes crt
i am also having same ans
        how to fix 76 & 90 ( in 90 either case K or C ) IN 76 UNKNOWN factor

  9. in first puzzle ….One who likes red color lives somewhere in the flat which is above K’s flat. One person lives between the one who likes red color …..
there are 6 flats above k’s flat ..becauce questin given is ‘somewhere ‘ how can u take particular two posibilities only …please explain

        1. K lives on floor 3 and flat 1 nw the possibilities for red are floor 4 and 5..and the flat number remains same i.e flat 1

          1. yup its nt mentioned..take this line-“One person lives between the one who likes red color and G who has got 96 marks” how wud u knw whethr its talking abt floor or flat?

similarly, take red anywhr abv K bt remembr the condition one prsn btw red and G…yes u cn place red on floor 4/5(flat 3) bt agn it says “One of the flats on which A lives is empty but that is not immediate left of A’s flat”…nt immediate left certainly means 2nd to left…nw trying place them..

P.S- if everything is mentioned clearly hw wud u utilise ur skills and i think everbody will be able to solve easily :-p

          2. one more question if u dont mind…cant the vacant flat be on the right of A if not on the immediate left???

          3. sure why nt..try it if its correct u ll get the puzzle correct othrwise u ll get stuck somewhere…
according to me it solely depends on wt u ll understand at the very moment bcoz we hardly hv tym in exam to try each n evry possibility, here u cn ofcourse take the vacant flat on right bt as ques says its nt on immediate left the first thing that struck my mind ws it mst me 2nd to left..if this wud hv gone wrong i wud hv surely put the vacant flat on right..

          4. yeah that wat i want to ask that we cant try each possibilty then hw too judge which possibilty to try first..thanks for reply..

      1. @@disqus_VdZ2es3ilU:disqus There are 2 flats between L and an empty flat likha h toh vacant floor should be in1st flat of second floor .above toh nhi likha h wha then why?
wha upar 4th floor m vacant rakhne ka jya matlab h , it is not even mentioned above at all

        1. u mean L shud on floor 5(flat 1)?
are you getting the puzzle correct frm this?
see there are possibilities and u hv to pick the right one…
post ur ans i ll try explaining 🙂

  13. Hi, I do think your web site could be having web browser compatibility issues.
Whenever I take a look at your web site in Safari, it looks fine however, if opening in IE, it’s got some overlapping issues.
I simply wanted to provide you with a quick
heads up! Apart from that, fantastic site!

  14. Hello there! This post could not be written any better! Looking at this post reminds me of
my previous roommate! He continually kept preaching about this.
I most certainly will send this post to him. Fairly certain he’s going to have a good read.

    Thank you for sharing!
