Uttarakhand CM launches Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana
The Uttarakhand state government launched a scheme to provide loans to the migrant workers amid coronavirus pandemic. Those who are returning to the state will be eligible to apply for the loans.
- Under the Mukhya Mantri Swarojgar Yojana, Uttarakhand government will provide loans for projects worth ₹25 lakh in the manufacturing sector and ₹10 lakh in the service sector.
- Under this scheme, loans will be provided by nationalised banks, scheduled commercial banks and co-operative banks.
Karnataka to launch State Health Register, a first-of-its-kind in India
The Karnataka government said it would soon launch a project to maintain the health database of all its citizens by having a “State Health Register.”
- A first of its kind initiative, the State Health Register will be a robust and standardized health repository of all the citizens.
- This project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

India GDP growth slows to 3.1% in Q4, stands at 11-year low of 4.2% in FY20
India’s economy grew 3.1 per cent in the January-March quarter compared with the same period last year, official data showed, reflecting the partial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
- The headline number for the full FY20 financial year came to an 11-year low of 4.2 per cent, against 6.1 per cent in 2018-19, said the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (Mospi).
- India’s eight infrastructure sectors contracted by a record 38.1 per cent in April, data from the industry department showed earlier in the day.
- The services sector, which accounts for 55 per cent of GDP, was among the hardest hit in a nationwide lockdown imposed since March 25 to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Trade, hotels and transport grew 2.6 per cent in the January-March quarter from a year ago, while financial services expanded 2.4 per cent.

Long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur handed four-year ban for doping
Long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur has been handed a four-year ban by World Athletics’ anti-doping body for testing positive for a banned substance (Enobosarm).
- The 32-year-old Kaur will be stripped of the gold medal she won at the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K. Her ban period begins from December 15 (2019), the date of in-competition sample collection. She was provisionally suspended by World Athletics on February 26.

Leo Puri to become Chairman of JP Morgan South Asia and South East Asia
J.P. Morgan named Leo Puri as chairman of south and southeast Asia. Puri will take on the new role, effective first quarter of 2021, while Morparia will remain with the bank to support transition.
- In addition to a switch at the chairman level, the bank also named 26-year J.P. Morgan investment banking veteran Murli Maiya as is its chief executive for south and southeast Asia.
- In addition, Madhav Kalyan will become J.P. Morgan’s senior country officer for India in the first quarter of 2021.
Aiman Ezzat becomes new CEO of Capgemini Group
Aiman Ezzat succeeded Paul Hermelin as French technology major Capgemini’s new CEO. Hermelin continues as Chairman of the Board.
- Ezzat, earlier the Chief Operating Officer, was appointed as CEO of the Capgemini Group at the close of the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders
Wipro appoints Thierry Delaporte as its new CEO & MD
Tech consulting and business process services firm Wipro Limited has appointed Thierry Delaporte as it’s new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. The appointment is effective from July 6, 2020.
- The company’s current CEO and MD Abidali Neemuchwala will relinquish his position as CEO and MD on June 1.
- Chairman Rishad Premji will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company until July 5.

South Africa’s Quarraisha Abdool Karim wins Christophe Merieux Prize
A South African HIV researcher Quarraisha Abdool Karim who found that a topical gel could stop many women catching the virus has been awarded one of France’s top science prizes.
- Karim won the half a million-euro ($551,000) Christophe Merieux Prize for her work for the Durban-based Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), which she heads.
- The Institut de France, which runs the prize, praised her work tracing “the cycle of transmission” of the virus, with “young women generally getting it from men 10 years their senior”.

First Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Ajit Jogi passes away
Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, 74, died after being hospitalised in Raipur following a heart attack.
- The former bureaucrat-turned-politician, who was the incumbent MLA from the Marwahi seat, was the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh after it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh as a separate State in November 2000.
- Jogi began his political journey nearly 35 years ago when he joined the Congress party after quitting his job as Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer posted in Madhya Pradesh. He left the government service in 1985 and became a Member of Parliament (MP) in Rajya Sabha in 1986. Jogi remained a member of the Upper House till 1998.
Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur passes away
Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur, who penned the famous ‘Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye’ and ‘Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli” in “Anand”, passed away. He was 77.
- Known by his first name in film circles, Yogesh was a prominent lyricist in ’70s Hindi cinema and gave some of his best songs in middle cinema like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee.
Renowned astrologer Bejan Daruwalla passes away
Famous astrologer Bejan Daruwalla succumbed to lung infection in a hospital at Ahmedabad. He was 89.
- Daruwalla was a known Ganesha devotee who combined the principles of various techniques like Vedic astrology, Numerology, Palmistry, I-Ching, Tarot, Kabalah and even Western astrology for his predictions. He had successfully predicted the market volatility and movement from time-to-time.
