India will be the first country to auction satellite spectrum: TRAI
India will be the first country to auction spectrum for satellite communication, and it should be designed to attract investments in the sector, telecom regulator Trai chairman PD Vaghela said.

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will soon make recommendations to make permissions required for satellite communication from various ministries — Information and Broadcasting, Space and Telecom — seamless to enhance ease of doing business in the sector.

16th Edition of Indo-Nepal joint training Exercise begins
India and Nepal began the 16th edition of the joint military training exercise to share theoretical and practical experiences in jungle warfare related to counter-terrorism military skills as well as disaster management.

  • A team from the Indian Army arrived in Nepal to participate in the “Surya Kiran” military training exercises taking place at Saljhandi in the Rupandehi district of Lumbini Zone near the Nepal-India border.
  • Exercise “SURYA KIRAN” is conducted annually between India and Nepal with the aim to enhance interoperability in jungle warfare & counter terrorism operations in mountainous terrain and HADR under UN mandate.

Assam govt launches ‘Orunodoi 2.0’, scheme to benefit over 1 mn people
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the second version of ‘Orunodoi’, the flagship scheme of the state government aimed at providing financial security to financially disadvantaged families. Under which 10.54 lakh beneficiaries will be given Rs 1,250 every month, officials said.

  • With the fresh inclusion, the total number of beneficiaries under the poverty alleviation scheme, which was first launched on December 1, 2020, will be around 27 lakh.
  • The Orunodoi benefit is usually transferred to the bank account of each beneficiary by the 10th day of every month, an official said.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Tokyo makes solar panels mandatory for new homes from 2025
The Japanese capital local assembly passed a new regulation which stated that all new houses in Tokyo built by large-scale homebuilders after April 2025 must install solar power panels to cut household carbon emissions. Currently, Japan stands at fifth spot in the world’s largest carbon emitters list.

  • This new regulation for new built homes requires about 50 major builders to equip homes of up to 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet) with renewable energy power sources, mainly solar panels.

Iran removed from UN Commission on the Status of Women
In an unprecedented move, Iran has been expelled from the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in a vote on which India abstained.

  • The US proposal at the UN Economic and Social Council to remove Iran from the panel received 29 votes, while there were eight votes against and 16 abstentions in the 54-member elected body.
  • The vote came after intense lobbying by the US following widespread protests in Iran sparked by outrage against the edict compelling women to wear hijabs.

Airbnb signs MoU with Goa govt to promote inclusive tourism
Airbnb inked an agreement with the government of Goa to jointly promote the state as one of the most high potential tourist destinations around the world. This will be done through targeted domestic and international destination promotion campaigns.

  • This partnership is aimed at encouraging travel to unique destinations that are lesser-known and enabling economically regenerative community-led tourism in the state.
  • On the sidelines of the official launch of ‘Rediscover Goa’, a week-long celebration of Goa’s vast cultural diversity beyond its beaches and dazzling nightlife, Airbnb and Goa Tourism Department have joined hands to scale homestay capacity across the state, and provide support to Goan homestay Hosts in delivering quality tourism experiences to guests, both domestic and international.

FINA World Swimming C’ships 2022: Chahat Arora sets national record in women’s 50m breaststroke
Indian swimmer Chahat Arora set a new national record in the women’s 50m breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships 2022 in Melbourne, Australia.

  • Chahat Arora clocked 32.91s to top heat 2 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre’s 25m short course pool and bettered her own previous record of 32.94s set at the National Aquatic Championships 2022 in September. Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte, topped the overall heats with a timing of 29.10s.

Tata Steel officially partners FIH Men’s World Cup 2023 in Odisha
Tata Steel has been named as an official partner of the men’s 2023 International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Cup, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hockey India.

  • The deal comes ahead of January’s 16-team tournament staged across the Indian cities Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
  • The FIH Men’s World Cup is the 15th edition of the prestigious event, the top tournament for men along with the Olympics, and will take place in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to January 29, 2023.

Rajeev Kumar Vishnoi appointed CMD of NHPC Limited
Sate owned NHPC Ltd announced that the company has appointed Rajeev Kumar Vishnoi as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) with effect from December 13,2022.

  • Vishnoi is not related to any of the directors of the NHPC and is not debarred from holding the office of director by virtue of any order of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) or any other such authority, the company said.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

India successfully test fires Agni-5 nuclear-capable ballistic missile
India successfully test fired nuclear-capable Agni-V ballistic missile having a range of over 5,000 km, marking a significant boost to the country’s strategic deterrence, people familiar with the development said.

  • The test-firing of the missile from the Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast came amid India’s lingering border row with China.
  • Existing variant Agni IV is capable of hitting targets at a range of 4,000 km while Agni-III has a range of 3,000-km, and Agni II can fly up to 2,000-km.
