Indo-US task force set up to elevate electronics trade to $100 bln in next decade
An Indo-US task force for electronics has been set up to elevate trade in the segment between the two nations to $100 billion over the next decade, the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) said.

  • The task force will work towards boosting trade, fostering innovation, creating jobs, and achieving seamless integration with the global tech ecosystem.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal announces every Tuesday will be car-free day in Karnal
In a significant move to raise awareness about drug-free living and promote environmental sustainability, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal announced that every Tuesday will be a car-free day in Karnal.

  • As part of this initiative, all government officials will be required to travel by bicycle on Tuesdays. The Chief Minister also pledged that if he visits Karnal on Tuesdays, he will also personally lead by example and travel by bicycle.
  • The Chief Minister made this announcement while addressing a large gathering of youth during the flag-off ceremony of the Drug-Free Haryana Cyclothon rally in Karnal. Prior to commencing the Cyclothon rally, he also administered an oath to the young participants, urging them to stay away from drug addiction.

Georgia declares October as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’
The state of Georgia in the United States has officially designated October as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ to recognise and celebrate the contributions of the ‘vibrant’ Hindu-American community within the state.

  • In an official proclamation, Governor Brian Kemp has declared October as ‘Hindu Heritage’ month. This declaration highlights the intention to celebrate Hindu heritage by emphasizing its rich culture and the diverse spiritual traditions that originate from India.


BANKING & FINANCE

UPI crosses 10 billion transactions for the first time in August
Digital payments on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have the potential to touch 100 billion transactions a month in the near future.

  • Instant payment system Unified payments interface (UPI)has crossed the historical mark of 10 billion transactions for the first time in the month of August, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said.
  • In July, UPI registered 9.96 billion transactions, with the total value for the month hitting Rs 15.34 lakh crore, as per NPCI data.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Moody’s upgrades India’s 2023 GDP Growth forecast to 6.7%
Global ratings and research agency Moody’s Investor Service, raised India’s growth forecast to 6.7% in 2023 from 5.5% projected earlier, as the Indian economy recorded 7.8% growth in the April-June quarter.

  • This growth has propelled the country to an overall growth rate of 7% year-on-year in the first half of 2023, outpacing China’s 5.4% growth for the same period
  • , However, the rating and research agency lowered the 2024 forecast down to 6.1% from the 6.5% projected earlier.

GST revenue rises 11% to Rs 1.59 lakh cr in August
The gross GST revenue collected in August is 1,59,069 crore rupees. This includes CGST of 28,328 crores, SGST of 35,794 crores, and IGST of 83,251 crores. The government has settled 37,581 crores to CGST and 31,408 crores to SGST from IGST. The total revenue of Centre and the States in August after regular settlement is 65,909 crore for CGST and 67,202 crore for SGST.

  • The revenues for the month of August are 11 percent higher than the GST revenues in the same month last year. During the month, revenue from import of goods was 3 percent higher and the revenues from domestic transactions were 14 percent higher than the revenues from these sources during the same month last year.

Grandmaster D Gukesh overtakes Viswanathan Anand as India’s top chess player in International ranking
Teenaged Grandmaster D. Gukesh has replaced the legendary Viswanathan Anand as India’s top chess player after more than three decades. Anand has been India’s No.1 since July 1986. The 17-year-old Chennai Grandmaster, who recently lost in the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup in Baku to Magnus Carlsen, moved ahead of Anand to be ranked No.8 in the world.

  • Gukesh’s entry into the top 10 of the FIDE rating list marks a significant milestone. He has climbed three places in the rating list since August 1.

Shanta Thoutam honoured with World Innovation Award at BRICS
Telangana’s Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) Shanta Thoutam has been presented with the World Innovation Award at the first BRICS Innovation Forum hosted at Moscow .

  • The award is given for outstanding contribution to the Sustainable Development Goal-4 that ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong opportunities for all. There were representations from more than 30 countries at the forum.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das rated A in Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023
Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das has been rated A in Global Finance’s Central Banker Report Cards 2023. Mr. Das has been placed at the top of the list of three Central Bank Governors, by US-based Global Finance magazine. He is followed by Switzerland’s Thomas J. Jordan and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Hong.

  • The Central Banker Report Cards, published annually by Global Finance since 1994, grade the central bank governors of 101 key countries, territories and districts, including the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

India’s first solar observatory mission, Aditya-L1, successfully launched from Sriharikota Space Centre
India’s journey towards the sun began as the maiden flight mission took off precisely at the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre Sriharikota. It took almost one hour and three minutes for Aditya L1 to begin its 125 days journey to the sun.

  • PSLV C 57 carrying Aditya L1 is the XL variant with longer strap on motors carrying higher fuel quantity . All the flight parameters were absolutely normal. 51minutes after the launch the first signal was received from the ship borne terminal for tracking the second part of the fourth stage.
  • In a period of four months, Aditya L1 will reach the Lagrange 1 point. where the gravitational forces of a two body system like the Sun and the Earth produce enhanced regions of attraction and repulsion.  Aditya’sL1 mission is to study the solar winds and the Sun’ s atmosphere. It carries seven payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere and the outermost layers of the Sun, the Corona.
  • India has till date launched 431 foreign satellites belonging to 36 countries since 1999 with its rockets and bulk of the numbers were by the PSLV rocket.The rocket has also been used to put into orbit 104 satellites in a single flight.
