1. A man was asked to state his age in years. His reply was, “Take my age 3 years hence, multiply it by 3 and then subtract three times my age three years ago and you will know how old I am”.What  was the age of the person ?

Solution:
Let the age of the man be x years
=>x=3(x+3)- 3(x-3)
=> x = 18 years
2. The rate of interest on a sum of money is 4% per annum for the first 2 years ,6% per annum for the next 4 years and 8% per annum for the period beyond 6 years .If the simple interest accrued by the sum for a total period of 9 years is Rs. 1120.What is the sum ?
A) Rs.2500
B) Rs.2200
C) Rs.2000
D) Rs.1800
E) Rs.2300

Solution:
SI  at the rate of 4% for 2 years = (P * 4* 2)/100 = 8P/100
SI at the rate of 6% for  the next 4 years = (P * 6 * 4)/100 = 24P/100
SI for the next 3 years =(P * 8* 3) / 100 = 24P/100
Total SI = 8P /100 + 24P/100 + 24P/100  = 56P/100
=> 1120 = 56P/100
=>P = (1120 *100)/56
=> P =Rs. 2000

3. In a village ,each of the 60% families has a cow ,each of the 30% of families has buffalo and each of the 15% of families has both a cow and a buffalo .In all there are 96 families in the village .How many families do not have  a cow or a buffalo?
A) 24
B) 20
C) 28
D) 26
E) 22

Solution:
Families have cow = + 60%
Families have buffalo = + 30%
Families have both =      – 15% 75 % Families don’t have cow or buffalo = 25% of 96 = 24
4. A manufacturer of patent medicines gives one dozen extra bottles of the medicine for every order of 12 dozens. A discount of 25% is also offered to the trader on the marked price. If a bottle is marked Rs. 117 ,Find the lowest price at which a bottle can be sold without any loss ?

Solution:
After discount = (75/100) * 117
= Rs. 87.75/bottles
Cost of 12 dozen bottles = 87.75 *12 *12 = 12636
Therefore , cost of one bottle  = 12656 /156 = Rs.81

5. A goods train and a passenger train are running on parallel tracks in the same direction. The driver of the goods train observes that the passenger train coming from behind overtakes and crossed his train completely in 60 seconds. Whereas a passenger on the passenger train marks that he crossed the goods train in 40 seconds. If the speed of the trains be in the ratio of 1:2, find the ratio of their lengths.

Relative speed = S1 – S2
S1 –S2 = D1 /60
S1 –S2 = D2 /40
D1/60 = D2 / 40
D1/D2 = 3/2

6. A right circular cone is exactly fitted inside a cube in such a way that the edges of the base of the cone are touching the edges of one of the faces of the cube and the vertex is on the opposite face of the cube .If the volume of cube is 343 cc .What approximately is the volume of the cone ?

Edge of the cube =  = 7 cm

Height = 7cm
Volume of cone = (1/3)r2h = (1/3)*(22/7)*3.5*3.5*7  90 cc
7. A bucket contains a mixture of two liquids A and B  in the proportion 7 : 5 . If 9 litres of the mixture is replaced by 9 litres of liquid B, then the ratio of the two liquids becomes 7 : 9 . How much of the liquid A was there in the bucket ?

4 unit = 9 litre
1 unit = 9/4 litre
initial mixture = 12 * (9/4) + 9 = 36
Liquid A = (7/12)*36 litre = 21 litres
8. A completes (7/10) of work in 15 days ,then he completes the remaining work with the help of B in 4 days. The time required for A  and B together to complete the entire work is :

Now,
(A+B)’s remaining work = 3 units  -> 4 days
4 days  = 3 units
1 day = (3/4) unit
Therefore , (A+B) =’s efficiency = (3/4) unit /day
(3/4) unit  -> 1 day
10 units  -> (10 *1) / (3/4) = 13(1/3) is the required no. of days
9. A carriage driving in a fog passed a  man who was walking at the rate of 3kms an hour in the same direction . He could see the carriage for 4 minutes and it was visible to him upto a distance of 100 m . What was the speed of the carriage ?
A) 4.5 km/hr
B) 5 km/hr
C) 3.8 km/hr
D) 4 km/hr

Solution:
100 m = 4 mins.
therefore , speed = (300/ 1000) / (4/60) = 1.5 km /hr
hence , speed of carriage = 1.5 km/hr
speed of man = 4.5 km /hr
10. A square field of area 31684 sq. m is to be enclosed with wire placed at heights 1, 2, 3, 4 metres above the ground .What length of the wire will be required ,if its length required for each circuit is 5% greater than the perimeter of the field ?
A) 2990.4 m
B) 2754.8 m
C) 3004. 7m
D) 2390.3 m

Solution:
Perimeter = √31684  * 4 = 178 * 4 m
length of each circuit = 178 *4*(105/100) m
since the wire goes round 4 times ,
total length of wire = 178 *4 *(105/100) *4 = 2990.4 m
