Reasoning: Puzzles and Arrangements Set 37 (for PO Mains)

Hard Puzzles type SBI PO 2017 Mains for exams – IBPS PO, RBI Grade B, NICL, Dena Bank PO PGDBF, BOI, OBC SO, Bank of Baroda and other competitive exams

Directions (1 – 5): Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.

Eight persons who names start with – A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting in a circle. Some are facing outside, and others towards the centre of the circle. The persons whose name starts with consecutive letters in English alphabetical series are not sitting together like A is not sitting with B, B is not sitting with A and C, and so on. Also not more than 2 consecutive persons face the same direction. Equal number of people are facing outside and inside.
C is sitting second to the left of F. There are 2 people sitting between B and A. A is facing outside. A and C are immediate neighbors. A does not like black color. The one who likes blue color is sitting second to the right of C. C is not sitting opposite B. 2 people are sitting between A and the one who likes blue color.
Also 3 people are sitting between D who does not like red color and the one who likes orange color. E is sitting second to the left of D. The one who likes green color is sitting third to the left of the one who likes black color. Both of them are not immediate neighbors of the one who like blue and orange colors. The one who likes white color is sitting third to the right of the one who likes red color. 2 people are sitting between G and the one who likes yellow color. B and G are not facing same direction.

  1. Who likes yellow color?
    A) E
    B) C
    C) F
    D) Other than those in options
    E) H
    View Answer
    Option C
    Explanation:
Start with 2 possibilities – F faces outside and F faces inside, then accordingly put C is sitting second to the left of F. Next A and C are immediate neighbors. So now there are 4 possibilities. Next use
There are 2 people sitting between B and A. A is facing outside. C is not sitting opposite B.
Now here 1 out of 4 possibilities cancel out. This one cancels out:

    Now 3 possibilities. Next use:
The one who likes blue color is sitting second to the right of C. 2 people are sitting between A and the one who likes blue color. So now 2 out of 3 possibilities cancel out, and we are left with:

Now since F and A (immediate neighbors) faces outside, so their other immediate neighbors cannot face outside, which is also shown in above figure.
Now use: E is sitting second to the left of D. Now D cannot be an immediate neighbor of D according to instructions. And E cannot be of F. So we get:

Also 3 people are sitting between D who does not like red color and the one who likes orange color.
Next: The one who likes green color is sitting third to the left of the one who likes black color. Both of them are not immediate neighbors of the one who like blue and orange colors. The second possibility cancels out, and we are left with 1st. Proceed further and final arrangement is
  2. Which of the following is true with respect to the given arrangement?
    A) There are 2 people sitting between B and H
    B) G likes red color
    C) E is facing towards the center of circle.
    D) C is sitting second to the right of one who likes yellow color.
    E) None of these is correct
    View Answer
    Option C
    Explanation:
If E faces outside, then B and G will face inside (equal number of people inside, outside). But this is not possible because then 3 consecutive people B, G and C will face inside which is also not possible, so E face inside definitely.
  3. Who is sitting opposite H?
    A) A
    B) G
    C) C
    D) Other than those given in options
    E) F
    View Answer
    Option C
  4. A likes which of the following colors?
    A) Red
    B) Orange
    C) White
    D) Grey
    E) Green
    View Answer
    Option E
  5. If G faces outside, then which of the following is odd one out based on certain pattern?
    A) B
    B) E
    C) C
    D) F
    E) D
    View Answer
    Option D
    All other face inside.

Directions (6 – 10): Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.

There is a rectangular sheet pasted on a wall with 8 unequal divisions (in height) vertically. Its dimensions are 16*64 sq. cm. Top division is numbered 1, then 2, and so on. Each division contains different number of small square sheets pasted in them. The side of these small square sheets is 4 cm each. One layer inside a division can contain only 4 sheets and remaining sheets are kept above these 4 in layers accordingly (The second layer can be started to fill with sheets only after filling the first layer with 4 sheets, and so on). So height of a particular division is according to the number of layers in respective divisions. Each division contains different colored sheets – pink, blue, white, yellow, red, grey, silver, green but not necessarily in the same order (If division 1 contains blue colored sheet, then all sheets in division 1 are blue colored)

There are 2 divisions between the division with 4 sheets and red colored sheets. The sum of sheets in division number 1 and 6 is 14. If the sheets in division number 4 are combined to form a large square, they form a 8*8 sq. cm square. Height of division number 7 is 12 cm. The division carrying yellow colored sheets is next in number to division carrying red colored sheets. The division leaving 3 divisions from division carrying red colored sheets is 4 cm in height. No division carries less than 2 sheets. There are 3 divisions between the division with 7 sheets and blue colored sheets. The division with red colored sheets contains 6 sheets. 3 of the divisions have same height (in cm) and number of sheets in them respectively. There is 1 division between the division with 8 sheets and white colored sheets. There are 3 divisions between the division with 10 sheets and silver colored sheets. There are more than 2 divisions between the division with silver colored and white colored sheets. The division with blue colored sheets does not contain 8 sheets. There is 1 division between the division with 5 sheets and green colored sheets. The division with grey colored sheets is above the division with green colored sheets. The division with pink colored sheets is below the division with grey colored sheets. There are total 54 sheets to be pasted on the rectangular sheet.

  1. How many sheets does division 7 contain?
    A) 8
    B) 11
    C) 10
    D) 12
    E) 9
    View Answer
    Option C
    Explanation:
Remember that – there are different number of small square sheets in each division. Sq. sheets size is 4*4. 1 layer in 1 division will mean 4 cm height of that division. 2 layers in 1 vision will mean (4+4)=8 cm height of that division. If a division contains 5 sheets, means height is 4+4 (because 4 sheets in layer 1, and remaining 1 in layer 2).
If the sheets in division number 4 are combined to form a large square, they form a 8*8 sq. cm square –> means – a 8*8 square means length 8 and breadth 8, means 2 sheets below, and 2 sheets above these 2 sheets to form a 8*8 square, means division 4 contains 4 sheets thus height = 4 cm.
Height of division number 7 is 12 cm. means at least 9 sheets are there in it (8+8+x) for 12 cm.
3 of the divisions have same height (in cm) and number of sheets in them respectively.
At last only division 2 will be left to fill with height. Total height is 64 cm, so that of div 2 will be 12 cm. Now since – 3 of the divisions have same height (in cm) and number of sheets in them respectively. So div 2 must contain 12 sheets. Now total number of sheets is 54, so div 5 will contain 2 sheets.
    Final Arrangement:
  2. Division 6 contains which colored sheets?
    A) grey
    B) white
    C) blue
    D) green
    E) pink
    View Answer
    Option D
  3. What is the total height of divisions 2, 6 and 8?
    A) 28 cm
    B) 26 cm
    C) 24 cm
    D) Other than those given in options
    E) 20 cm
    View Answer
    Option A
    12 + 8 + 8 = 28 cm
  4. Which of the division numbers satisfy the condition – 3 of the divisions have same height (in cm) and number of sheets in them respectively?
    A) 2, 3, and 6
    B) 3, 4, and 6
    C) 2, 3, and 5
    D) 2, 4, and 6
    E) None of these
    View Answer
    Option D
  5. How many divisions are there between the divisions having 7 sheets and the division with white colored sheets?
    A) One
    B) Three
    C) Seven
    D) Four
    E) Six

        1. Start from here
If the sheets in division number 4 are combined to form a large square, they form a 8*8 sq. cm square.

          Then
There are 2 divisions between the division with 4 sheets and red colored sheets.
          so 2 possibilities now.
          Next yellow just below red
          Next
The division leaving 3 divisions from division carrying red colored sheets is 4 cm in height.

          Proceed now

    @mod
    qsn 2nd
…… how to divide 14 sheets between division number 2 & division number5.?

m nt able to getting ur point form ” So div 2 must contain 12 sheets. Now total number of
sheets is 54, so div 5 will contain 2 sheets.”………..how div 2 must contain 12 sheet…..it might be 10 or 11…!! plz clear my doubt _/_

    1. Its dimensions are 16*64 sq. cm.

      So height = 24 cm
At last only division 12 will be left
Add the height of all other divisions, it will be 52 cm
      so div 2 will be 64 – 52 = 12 cm
Next given , 3 of the divisions have same height (in cm) and number of sheets in them respectively. -………………….(1)
      4th div is 4 cm 4 sheets
      6th div is 8 cm 8 sheets

      2 divisions are done
so 1 more left for condition (1)
so 12 cm means 12 sheets
      so div 2 –> 12 cm 12 sheets

      now total sheets 54
      and find for div 5

        4th div is 4 cm 4 sheets
        6th div is 8 cm 8 sheets
        5th div is 4cm 4 sheets
