Critical and logical Reasoning – Set 29

Directions (1-5): Study the following information and answer the given questions.

  1. Statement: A court can convict an accused solely on the basis of a dying declaration but such a declaration should be free from any doubt and the victim making the statement should be mentally fit – issued by supreme court.
    Assumptions:
    I. One who is not mentally fit always makes statement untrustworthy in nature.
II. Declaration made by the dying person is likely to be true.
III. It is possible to distinguish whether a declaration is doubtful or not.

    Only I is implicit
Both I and II are implicit
Both II and III are implicit
    Only III is implicit
    None of these
    Option C
Assumption I: Statement I is not implicit as it is not mentioned in the statement that persons who are not mentally fit makes untrustworthy statements
Assumption II: Statement II is implicit because court can convict only if the declaration made by the dying person is true.
Assumption III: Statement III is also implicit as declaration made by the person should be distinguishable that declaration is doubtful or not.

  2. Statement: Will virtual classrooms and robots replace real classrooms and human teachers in near future?
    Arguments:
    I. Yes. At the pace we are progressing there will be a time when everyone will be taught by robots.
II. No. Machines cannot emulate the human touch, inspiration and motivation. Robots may not be able to emulate the intelligent thinking process, imagination, perception and insight of humans.

If only argument I is strong
If only argument II is strong
If both argument I and II are strong
If neither argument I nor II is strong
If either argument I or II is strong
    Option B
Argument I does not convincingly say why robots could replace real teachers in the classroom in the near future. Technological advertisements are not explanations enough to support the idea.
Argument II presents the argument in a forceful manner and is thus forceful and valid. Hence, only argument II is strong.

  3. Statement: The government’s efforts to curtail drug abuse is unable to achieve any result, mainly because the people who are involved in this are closely related to high profile people in the society.
    Arguments:
    I. The government should provide more support to the enforcement authority in bringing such people to books.
II. The government should ask the drug peddlers to not to sell drugs to high profile people.
III. The government should declare consumption of drugs as illegal.

If Only argument I is strong
If both argument II and I are strong
If both argument III and II are strong
If Only argument II is strong
    None of these
    Option A
The statement brings out the reasons behind the government’s failure to curtail drug menace. As the people involved are high profile people, it is possible that the efforts of the enforcement authority do not run smoothly. Hence, I states that the government should increase its support to the enforcement authority. This would help them to perform their duty properly. Hence, I is a strong argument.
Statement II is meaningless as the government does not support selling of drugs at all.
Statement III is based on the assumption that drug abuse is not declared illegal. Hence, only argument I is strong.

  4. The chairman of a car company announced in a meeting that all trials of its first product, a new model of car ‘X’ are over and the company is planning to launch its product in the market within six months. Which of the following will strengthen the chairman’s decision?
    I. Material management and other resources will have to be in fine tune to maintain production schedule.
II. Company should also make plans for products other than car.
III. The network of dealers must be finalized and all legal, financial and other matters in this regard should be finalized at the earliest.

    Only I
    Only II
    Only I and III
    All three
    None of these
    Option C
From statement I: Materials and other resources are present in abundant in future to meet the requirements of the products and work will be done according to the schedule. Hence, statement I strengthen the chairman’s decision.
From statement II: This statement does not deal with the idea of the given statement.
From statement III: Legal, financial and other aspects should be finalized at the earliest so that work will be done according to the schedule. Hence, statement III strengthens the chairman’s decision. Hence both statements I and III are implicit.

  5. Statements: A simple DNA test can predict whether someone is more likely to lose weight on a low fat or a low carbohydrate diet say US researches. Their study looked at how well people with different genes fared on different weight loss diets.
    Conclusions:
    I. People’s bodies react to certain nutrients differently and this is related to their genetic makeup.
II. A better understanding of one’s genetic makeup helps in charting out one’s diet pattern to lose weight.

    If only conclusion I follows
    If only conclusion II follows
If both conclusions I and II follow
If neither conclusion I nor II follows
If either conclusion I or II follow
    Option C
It’s stated that a DNA test can predict whether someone is more likely to lose weight on a low fat or low carbohydrate diet. This means that a person’s genetic makeup determines how his/ her body reacts to certain nutrients and this may play a role in charting out one’s diet pattern. Hence, both conclusions I and II follow.

  6. Statement: It is found that the computer of one of the top officials in the prime minister’s office is hacked. Which of the following conclude from the given statement?
    I. The government may stop providing computers to top officials.
II. The government may order immediate change of security features on all computers used by top officials.
III. The official concerned may be arrested.

    Only (I)
    Only (II) and (I)
    Only (III)
    Only (II)
    None of these
    Option D
The hacking of computers of a top official may raise security concerns because the top official may be dealing with such issues which need to be held under strict secrecy. Statement I may not take place because without computers the storage and recovery of data becomes difficult and time consuming.
Statement II may take place because government may first safe guard the computers of other top officials from being hacked.
In statement III there is no information that hacking is done with the knowledge of official concerned.
