CJI Chandrachud inaugurates cafe run by differently-abled in Supreme Court Taking a step towards promoting inclusivity, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud inaugurated the ‘Mitti Cafe’, wholly managed by differently-abled people, on the Supreme Court premises.

  • The ‘Mitti Cafe’ has opened 38 outlets in different parts of the country and they have served six million meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.Mitti cafe is being run by an NGO who works with people of special needs. The non profit organisation provides them with employment opportunities.

Supreme Court: Nationwide Ban On Use Of Barium And Other Prohibited Chemicals In Firecrackers
The Supreme Court clarified that its order banning the use of barium and other banned chemicals in firecrackers applies to the entire country, and not just the National Capital Region.

  • A bench of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh was hearing an application that sought directions to the Rajasthan government to comply with the top court’s orders.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India to be added to U.K. safe states list, ruling out asylum rights for illegal migrants from the country
The UK government has tabled plans to add India to an expanded list of safe states, which would speed up the process of returning Indians who travel from the country illegally and rule out their chance of seeking asylum in Britain.

  • Draft legislation laid in the House of Commons includes India and Georgia as the countries to be added to the list. The UK Home Office said the move is aimed at strengthening the country’s immigration system and help prevent abuse by people making unfounded protection claims.

Russia pulled out of Treaty of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe
Russia has officially pulled out of an international security pact that restricts the use of conventional weapons, saying NATO’s expansion has made such cooperation impossible.

  • After announcing its intention to exit the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) earlier this year, Russia formally withdrew from the landmark pact.

Samsung unveils its ChatGPT rival AI model, Samsung Gauss
Korean smartphone maker Samsung has launched its set of generative AI model called Samsung Gauss at the company’s AI Forum 2023.

  • Developed by Samsung Research, Gauss consists of three tools: a generative AI model called Samsung Gauss Language, a coding assistant called Samsung Gauss Code and an image generator and editor called Samsung Gauss Image.
  • The generative AI model “is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, the legendary mathematician who established normal distribution theory, the backbone of machine learning and AI.

InterGlobe Enterprises ties up with US-based Archer for air taxi service
InterGlobe Enterprises, a majority shareholder in low-cost airline IndiGo, said it has entered into a partnership with US-based Archer Aviation Inc to launch and operate an all-electric air taxi service in India.

  • Through this MoU the two companies aim to provide a revolutionary transportation solution for the country, improving urban mobility with safe, sustainable, and low-noise electric air taxi service that is cost-competitive with ground transportation.

Australia captain Meg Lanning announces retirement from international cricket 
Meg Lanning announced her retirement from international cricket after leading the Kangaroos for almost 13 years. Lanning, who led the Aussies to five World Cup wins, scored 8,352 runs in 241 matches over all three formats.

  • Lanning debuted against New Zealand in 2010 in a T20 match and took up the role of captaincy in 2014 at the age of 21. She had a win percentage of eighty and went on to win the 50-overs world crown in 2022 and the T20 titles in 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023.

Meet ‘Mika’, The World’s First Ever AI Humanoid Robot CEO 
A global company has recently announced that it has hired the first ever humanoid robot as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).Polish rum company Dictador announced that it has appointed AI-powered humanoid robot ‘Mika’ to lead the firm. As the first CEO female robot, Mika is a board member who steers operations on Dictador’s behalf, the company said.

  • Mika is a research project between Dictador and Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based engineering and robotics company known for its development of human-like robots with AI for consumer, entertainment, service, healthcare, and research applications. The two firms customised the robotic CEO to represent the company and its unique values.

Kozhikode and Gwalior Join UNESCO Creative Cities Network
Gwalior and Kozhikode from India are among the 55 new cities which have joined the UNESCO Creative Cities On World Cities Day(31st October) , 55 cities joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), following their designation by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

  • These new cities were acknowledged for “their strong commitment to harnessing culture and creativity as part of their development strategies, and displaying innovative practices in human-centred urban planning.
  • While Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh has made it to the coveted list in the ‘Music’ category, Kozhikode in Kerala has earned the place in the ‘Literature’ category.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

SpaceX to launch its 29th crew resupply mission to space station
SpaceX’s next robotic cargo mission to the International Space Station CRS-29 has been cleared for take off. The mission is set to launch on a Falcon 9 from the Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

  • The CRS-29 mission carries crucial scientific experiments and technology demonstrations, including optical communications equipment and instruments for measuring atmospheric waves.
  • The spacecraft is carrying two major experiments, NASA’s AWE( Atmospheric Waves Experiment) and ILLUMA-T experiments (Integrated Laser Communications Relay Demonstration Low Earth Orbit User Modem and Amplifier Terminal) to study atmospheric waves and laser-based communication.
