RBI to join GFIN’s Greenwashing TechSprint to tackle ESG risks
The Reserve Bank of India has opened the application window for all India based firms and innovators to participate in Global Financial Innovation Network (GFIN)’s first ever Greenwashing TechSprint. The window will close on  May 21, 2023.

  • RBI will be among the 13 international regulators taking part in GFIN’s Greenwashing TechSprint.
  • The TechSprint will bring together 13 international regulators alongside firms and innovators to address GFIN’s priority on environmental, social and governance (ESG) and sustainable finance.

RBI launches ‘100 Days 100 Pays’ campaign for return of unclaimed deposits
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a new effort called the ‘100 Days 100 Pays’ campaign, which aims to facilitate the retrieval and settlement of the top 100 unclaimed deposits in every bank across the country within 100 days.

  • This initiative is part of the RBI’s ongoing efforts to minimise the volume of unclaimed deposits in the banking system and return these funds to their rightful owners or claimants. The campaign will begin on June 1, 2023.

London Stock Exchange Group to set up tech CoE in Hyderabad
The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) has announced its plan to set up a technology centre of excellence in Hyderabad, India.

  • This move is expected to create about 1,000 jobs a year and boost the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector in the city.
  • This move is in line with the Indian government’s efforts to attract more foreign investment and promote the growth of the country’s economy.

India’s retail inflation eases to 4.70% in April
India’s retail inflation measured in terms of Consumer Price Index (CPI) has eased to 4.70 per cent in the month of April, recent data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed.

  • This is the second month in a row that the inflation has remained within the tolerance band of 2-6 per cent of the RBI after going beyond 6 per cent in February and then coming to 5.66 per cent in March, data released by the Ministry showed.
  • The fall in the inflation number can be attributed to moderation in food and fuel prices apart from the low base effect. The easing price of cereals and vegetables in addition with lower energy prices has also pulled back the inflationary trend.

Indo National ties up with Apollo Hospitals for renewable energy
City-based Indo National Ltd. (INL) is foraying into renewable energy sector by tying up with Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd.

  • The Chennai-based company said the main object of the new entity is to venture into the renewable energy space.
  • In a regulatory filing, the company said its board of directors has approved the incorporation of a new subsidiary in which INL will hold 74 per cent of equity share capital while the remaining 26 per cent paid-up equity share capital will be held by Apollo Hospitals Enterprises.

Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal scores fastest IPL 50 in 13 balls
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a player for the Rajasthan Royals, has been performing exceptionally well in the IPL 2023. During a match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, he set a new record by scoring the fastest 50 in IPL history, achieving this feat in just 13 balls.

  • This surpassed the previous record held by KL Rahul and Pat Cummins, who both reached 50 in 14 balls while playing for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. Although Jaiswal’s 13-ball 50 is the quickest in IPL history, it ranks as the second-fastest 50 in the T20 format.
  • The record for the fastest 50 in T20s is held by former Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh, who achieved it in 12 balls against England in 2007.

Cochin Port bags Sagar Shreshta Award of Ministry of Ports Shipping & Waterways for best performance
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways honoured the Cochin Port Authority (CPA) with the Sagar Shreshtha Sammaan for the best turnaround time in non-container category during 2022-23.

  • Minister for Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal presented the award to CPA Chairperson M. Beena in New Delhi.
  • The award is in recognition of the ‘excellent performance of the Cochin Port in handling dry bulk and liquid bulk cargo vessels’.

Yuzvendra Chahal becomes highest wicket-taker in IPL
Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal added another gem to his crown as he became the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL), overtaking former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Dwayne Bravo.

  • Chahal scripted history in a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) here at Eden Gardens when the legspinner picked up his 184th wicket in the tournament.
  • With this wicket, Chahal (184) went past former Dwayne Bravo in the league’s all-time wickets tally. Bravo took 183 scalps. Piyush Chawla (174), Amit Mishra (172), and Ravichandran Ashwin (171) are also in the list of most wickets in the IPL.

IBM partners NASA to convert satellite data into high resolution maps
IBM in collaboration with NASA unveiled a new geospatial foundation model designed to convert satellite data into high-resolution maps of floods, fires, and other landscape changes to reveal the planet’s past and hint at its future.

  • This geospatial offering is expected to be available for preview in the second half of this year. Potential applications of this platform would include helping to estimate climate-related risks to crops, buildings, and other infrastructure, valuing and monitoring forests for carbon-offset programmes, and developing predictive models to help enterprises create strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Birth anniversary of Indian football legend PK Banerjee to be celebrated as ‘AIFF Grassroots Day’
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has declared that June 23, the birth anniversary of Indian football legend Pradip Kumar Banerjee, will be recognized as ‘AIFF Grassroots Day’.

  • This decision was made in acknowledgment of PK’s remarkable contributions to Indian football, notably his instrumental role in leading the national team to a historic Gold Medal triumph in the 1962 Asian Games.
