India & Bangladesh launch ’50 Start-ups Exchange Programme’
The first group of 10 start-up companies under the 50 start-ups exchange programme between India and Bangladesh returned to Dhaka after completing a successful five-day visit to India from 8-12 May.

  • These Start-ups belong to sectors such as e-commerce, health, transport and logistics, energy, education and skill development.
  • Under this programme, 50 Start-ups from Bangladesh and 50 Start-ups from India will exchange visits to each other’s countries for exploring partnerships, expanding business relations, sharing experience and knowledge and expanding youth and entrepreneurial cooperation.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Inaugurates National Homoeopathic Convention ‘Homeocon 2023’ 
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently inaugurated the National Homoeopathic Convention ‘Homeocon 2023’ at Doon University, Dehradun.

  • The convention aimed to showcase the significance of homeopathy as the second most practiced system of medicine worldwide, particularly highlighting its role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • With the commitment of the state government to establish Uttarakhand as a prominent AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) region, the event underscored the economic and effective nature of homeopathic treatments.

Rang De collaborates with Mission Samriddhi to launch Mushroom Fund for underserved TN farmers
Rang De, a peer-to-peer social investing platform, has collaborated with social impact enterprise, Mission Samriddhi to launch a Mushroom Fund.

  • The fund intends to support underserved farmers in Tamil Nadu to drive sustainable income from mushroom cultivation.
  • According to a press release, during the initial phase, 40 farmers located in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu will receive assistance, enabling them to earn a minimum of ₹8,000 monthly during the first year.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Brazil confirms first ever avian flu cases in wild birds
Brazil, the world’s top chicken exporter, has for the first time confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases but only in wild birds, the Agriculture Ministry said.

  • Two cases were detected in wild birds and should not trigger a ban on imports of Brazilian poultry products as per guidelines from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), according to the Brazilian government.

Gatka martial art included in 37th National Games
The traditional game of Gatka is set to receive a major boost on a national level as it has been officially included in the 37th National Games-2023, which are scheduled to take place in Goa in October of this year.

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will be organizing competitions for a total of 43 disciplines during this national event, in collaboration with the Government of Goa.

Barcelona wins La Liga for 1st time since 2019, 27th overall
Barcelona lifted its first league trophy after Messi’s departure with a 4-2 victory at Espanyol in a match marred by Espanyol fans storming the pitch at the end of the game and forcing Barcelona players to head for the locker room.

  • Robert Lewandowski scored twice to lead the Catalan club to its first league title since 2019. The title was secured with four rounds remaining and two years after Messi left amid the club’s financial struggles.

UP ranks second for most GI tagged products
Uttar Pradesh now holds the second position in the country in terms of having the maximum number of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged goods.

  • The state has received GI tags for three more One District One Product (ODOP) crafts, taking the total number of GI-tagged products in the state to 48. The three newly-tagged ODOP crafts are Mainpuri tarkashi, Mahoba Gaura stone craft, and Sambhal horn craft.
  • While Tamil Nadu leads with 55 GI-tagged goods, UP and Karnataka follow with 48 and 46 GI products, respectively. However, UP is first in terms of GI-tagged handicrafts with 36 crafts to its credit. With this feat, UP, beating Karnataka, has become the second state with maximum GI-tagged goods in the country. UP also has the maximum number of GI tags in handicrafts in the country. According to him, of the 48 GI goods of UP, 36 products belong to the handicraft category. In Varanasi region alone, 18 GI-tagged goods out of 23 belong to the handicraft category.

Gauri’ bags ‘Best Long Documentary Award’ at South Asian Film Festival of Montreal
The documentary “Gauri”, directed by Kavitha Lankesh, has received the “Best Long Documentary Award” at the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal 2023.

  • The film is about journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh, who was assassinated in 2017, and the current political crisis in India.
  • The award citation describes the film as a courageous and uncompromising examination of the events surrounding Gauri Lankesh’s murder, and praises Kavitha Lankesh’s energetic direction and narration.

UGC launches two websites to enhance quality education in India – UTSAH and PoP portals
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a new website, the UTSAH (Undertaking Transformative Strategies and Actions in Higher Education) Portal, and the Professor of Practice (PoP) Portal to promote quality education in India.

  • The launch of these new initiatives is a significant step by the UGC in its efforts to promote quality education in India.
  • The new website, UTSAH Portal, and PoP Portal will provide valuable resources to students, faculty, and universities, and will help to improve the quality of higher education in India.

MIT-World Peace University launches Asia’s first Subsea research lab
MIT-World Peace University (WPU) has built the first-ever subsea research lab in Asia, with an aim to foster multi-disciplinary talent for the global oil and gas industry, the institute said.

  • Called the Centre for Subsea Engineering Research (CSER), the lab showcases a working prototype of deep-water offshore petroleum operations, revolutionising the way in which future workforce can be trained for the energy sector.
  • The state-of-the-art laboratory is the brainchild of the Department of Petroleum Engineering (PE) at MIT-WPU, and was built in partnership with Aker Solutions.
