Inaugural Edition of Indo-Egypt Joint Training Exercise Cyclone
The first ever joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian Army and the Egyptian Army named “Exercise Cyclone-I” is in progress at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan . 

  • The exercise aims to bolster defence co-operation between the two nations and focus on sharing professional skills and interoperability of Special Forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special operations.
  • The 14 days long exercise which is being carried out in the deserts of Rajasthan engages both the contingents to advance special forces skills. 

Kerala’s Wayanad becomes first district in country to provide basic documents to all tribal people
Wayanad becomes the first district in the country to provide basic documents and facilities such as Aadhaar cards, ration cards, birth/death certificates, election ID cards, bank accounts and health insurance to all tribespeople.

  • The Wayanad district administration has attained the meritorious achievement by providing 1,42,563 services to as many as 64,670 tribal beneficiaries as part of the Akshaya Big Campaign for Document Digitisation (ABCD) campaign. 
  • This includes ration cards to 15,796 families, Aadhar cards to 31,252, birth certificates to 11,300, voters’ identity cards to 22,488 and digital locker facilities to 22,888 persons through the ABCD campaign. The drive was launched in November 2021 at Thondarnadu grama panchayat.

India International Science Festival begins in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh 
The 8th edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF) was inaugurated at the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal. The theme of the four-day festival is Marching towards Amrit Kaal with Science, Technology, and Innovation.

  • The theme of the mission is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to build a self-reliant India and is also aligned with the G20 vision, which is Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam or “One Earth· One Family · One Future”.

LIC unveils Jeevan Azad limited premium payment plan
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has launched LIC Jeevan Azad Plan, offering death benefits and an assured maturity sum in the event the policyholder survives.

  • The plan’s minimum sum assured is Rs 2 lakh, and the maximum is Rs 5 lakh. The subscriber won’t require a medical test if the sum assured is up to Rs 3 lakh, if more, they will require one.
  • Likewise, the minimum policy term is 15 years, and the maximum is 20 years, while the lowest age limit is 90 days and the highest is 50 years.

Jio is India’s strongest brand, ranked ninth globally: Report
Reliance Jio has been ranked as the strongest brand in India and placed ninth among the world’s strongest brands, according to the latest report ‘Global 500 – 2023’ published by Brand Finance.

  • ‘Jio’ was placed ninth among the world’s strongest brands ahead of brands like EY, Coca Cola, Accenture and Porsche, and behind the likes of Google, YouTube, Deloitte and Instagram.
  • With a Brand Strength Index of 90.2, Jio is the only brand among the world’s strongest 25 brands, according to the Brand Finance listing, a release said.

IOA sets up seven-member committee to probe allegations against WFI chief
India’s Olympic Association formed a seven member committee to investigate allegations of sexual harassment in the country’s Wrestling Federation.

  • A panel consisting of boxing legend M C Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt has been set up to probe allegations against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. 
  • The panel also includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation of India (IWLF) president Sahdev Yadav.

Chris Hipkins set to replace Jacinda Ardern as New Zealand’s PM
Chris Hipkins is set to replace Jacinda Ardern as leader of the Labour party and New Zealand’s prime minister after being the only candidate to be nominated for the role, the Labour Party said. 

  • First elected to parliament for the Labour Party in 2008, the 44-year-old Hipkins became a household name fronting the government’s response to the pandemic after being appointed minister for COVID-19 in November 2020.
  • Hipkins is currently minister for police, education and public service, as well as leader of the House.

Virat Kohli back in top-5 in ODI rankings
Back at his vintage best, former India skipper Virat Kohli, who scored two centuries and scored 283 runs in three matches against Sri Lanka, jumped two places to break into top-five in the latest ICC ODI rankings

  • Kohli now has 750 points and has second-placed Rassie van der Dussen (766) and third-placed Quinton de Kock (759) in his sights, while Pakistan skipper Babar Azam remains way out in front with 887 points.
  • Kohli’s teammates Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav have also moved up in rankings.

Asteria Aerospace receives DGCA type certification for its A200-XT drone
Asteria Aerospace, a full stack drone technology company, said it has received type certification for its indigenously designed and manufactured A200-XT drone from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). 

  • With this achievement, Asteria said it has become the first company to have two DGCA-certified drones that it can offer to its customers for a variety of applications including law enforcement, industrial security, infrastructure inspections, and agriculture and land surveys.


IMPORTANT DAYS

UNESCO dedicates this year’s International Day of Education to Afghan girls and women
UNUNESCO has decided to dedicate the International Day of Education on the 24th of January, 2024 to Afghan girls and women. Director general Audrey Azoulay said that no country in the world should bar women and girls from receiving an education and it is a universal human right that must be respected.

  • According to UNESCO, currently, around 80 per cent of school-aged Afghan girls and young women are out of school under the Taliban rule, as they denied them access to secondary schools and universities.
