Aadhaar facial transactions reach all time high at 10.6 million in May: Govt
The usage of Aadhaar based face authentications has reached 10.6 million in May, up by 38% since January. It is the second consecutive month in which 10 million authentications has been reached, the ministry of electronics and IT said in a statement.

  • Indicating the growing usage of the service, the report states that it was now being used by 47 entities including the state and central government departments as well as some banks.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India removed from UNSG report on impact of armed conflict on children
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has removed India from his annual report on the impact of armed conflict on children, citing measures taken by the Indian government to better protect them.

  • India was mentioned in the report of the Secretary-General on Children and armed conflict since 2010 along with other countries of Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Lake Chad basin, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines for alleged recruitment and use of boys by armed groups in Jammu and Kashmir; detainment of boys by Indian security forces in J&K for their alleged association with armed groups, or on national security grounds.

India, Israel to boost ties in agriculture
India and Israel are planning a slew of initiatives to bolster their cooperation in agriculture, said Ohad Nakash Kaynar, Deputy Chief of Mission at Israel’s Embassy in New Delhi.

  • The two countries are planning to push high-level agricultural technology cooperation between Israeli institutions and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • In recent years, both sides have worked closely on water reuse, fertigation, soil management, drip irrigation, desalination, advanced filtration, advanced water leakage detection, soilless agriculture, rainwater collection and treatment systems and water security technologies.


BANKING & FINANCE

HDFC to be ranked among World’s Most Valuable banks after Mega-Merger
India’s HDFC Bank will soon rank among the world’s most valuable banks after completing a landmark merger.

  • The tieup of HDFC Bank Ltd. and Housing Development Finance Corp. will make the resulting entity fourth biggest in terms of equity market capitalisation, just behind JPMorgan Chae & Co., Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd. and Bank of America Corp. The tieup is valued at about $172 billion, Bloomberg reported

Table Tennis, Indian women’s doubles pair of Sutirtha and Ayhika clinches WTT Contender tournament title in Tunis
The Indian women’s doubles pair of Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee won the World Table Tennis, ( WTT) Contender tournament in Tunis, after beating the Japanese pair of Miyuu Kihara and Miwa Harimoto. The Indian duo won 3-1 (11-5, 11-6, 5-11, 13-11) in a challenging final. The pair also became the first Indians to win a Contender title this year.

  • The Indian pair had advanced to the final after beating Korean duo of Shin Yubin and Jeon Jihi 3-2 (7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9) in a hard-fought last-four clash.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Manika Batra and G Sathiyan as well as the men’s doubles duo of Manav Vikash Thakkar and Manush Utpalbhai Shah had lost their respective semifinal matches.

Ashes 2023: Steve Smith Pips Rahul Dravid, Becomes Second Fastest Batter to Score 9000 Test Runs
Premier Australia batter Steve Smith registered his name in the record books by completing 9000 runs during the second Ashes Test against England at the Lord’s, London. Smith, widely regarded among the best Test batters in world cricket, achieved the massive feat on Day 1.

  • The 34-year-old breached the mark in his 174th Test innings and become the second fastest to score 9000 runs after legendary Sri Lanka batter Kumara Sangakkara. Smith has gotten past Ricky Ponting to become the fastest Australian to achieve the feat. Ponting reached the mark in 177 innings.

Boxing champion Mary Kom named Global Indian Icon at UK-India Awards
Sporting legend and India’s first-ever Olympic medallist in women’s boxing, Mary Kom, has been honoured with the Global Indian Icon of the Year award at the annual UK-India Awards in Windsor, south-eastern England.

  • The 40-year-old former Rajya Sabha member spoke of her 20-year journey of hard work and devoting her life to boxing as she accepted the award from Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami at a gala ceremony.

7 Handicrafts Products of Uttar Pradesh Gets Geographical Indication Tag
The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai has given tags to seven different products from Uttar Pradesh.

  • ‘Amroha Dholak’, ‘Mahoba Gaura Patthar Hastashlip’, ‘Mainpuri Tarkashi’, ‘Sambhal Horn Craft’, ‘Baghpat Home Furnishings’, ‘Barabanki Handloom Product’ and ‘Kalpi Handmade Paper’ are the products that been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Union Minister Rupala launches “Report Fish Disease” App
Shri Parshottam Rupala, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India launched an android-based mobile app as “Report Fish Disease”. 

  • Contributing to the vision of “Digital India”, the ‘Report Fish Disease’ has been developed by ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow and launched under the National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases.
  • The Department of Fisheries has allocated ₹33.78 crore for a period of three years for the implementation of the second phase of the NSPAAD under the PMMSY scheme. With the launch of this App, NSPAAD was able to meet the national and international obligations through transparent reporting.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Virgin Galactic completes first manned mission to space
Virgin Galactic, the space venture established by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, has achieved a significant milestone as it successfully completed its first manned mission to the edge of space.

  • The inaugural commercial flight, which took place on June 29, marks a momentous achievement for Virgin Galactic after two decades of dedicated efforts.
  • The mission featured two Italian Air Force personnel who were funded by the organisation. Colonel Walter Villadei, who is also slated for a future paid SpaceX mission to orbit, and Lieutenant Colonel Angelo Landolfi, a physician trained as a crew surgeon for Russian cosmonauts, were among the passengers.
