India drops six places to 144 among 199 countries in passport index
Indian passport slipped six ranks on the Passport Index 2023 released by financial advisory services firm Arton Capital.

  • As compared to the 138th rank out of 199 countries in 2022, India ranked 144 with a mobility score of 70 in 2023. This is the largest global fall in the index this year.
  • The ranking was topped by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with a mobility score of 181. It was followed by Sweden, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria, with a joint mobility score of 174.

Saudi Arabia joins Shanghai Cooperation Organization as China ties increase
Saudi Arabia’s cabinet approved a decision to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as Riyadh builds a long-term partnership with China despite U.S. security concerns.

  • The SCO is a political and security union of countries spanning much of Eurasia, including China, India and Russia.
  • Besides China, its eight members include India, Pakistan and Russia, as well as four central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Iran joined SCO as a permanent member last year.


BANKING & FINANCE

PFRDA increases Ombudsman’s upper age limit to 70 years from 65 years
Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has increased the upper age limit by 5 years for Ombudsman to 70 years.

  • As per the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (Redressal of Subscriber Grievance) Regulations 2015, the upper age limit was 65 years.
  • Ombudsman appointed by PFRDA receives, considers and facilitates resolution of complaints or grievances, which fall within the ambit of the regulations.

SBI announces donation of ₹48 lakh for tree plantation
The State Bank of India has announced a donation of ₹48 lakh for the plantation of 32,000 tree saplings at Garden City University, Bengaluru, in association with an NGO, That’s Eco Foundation, as part of its corporate social responsibility.

  • The project is being implemented under Miyawaki Technique. Miyawaki is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki, that helps build dense, native forests. This ensures that the plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India’s defence exports will touch Rs 40,000 crores by 2026: Rajnath Singh
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, said that India’s defence export will touch Rs 35,000-40,000 crore by the year 2026.

  • Rajnath Singh was delivering the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw memorial lecture on the topic ‘The role of youth in nation building’ organised by Symbiosis International University in Pune.
  • He said about being confident that by 2026, the country will be doing approximately Rs 35,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore in export in the defence sector.

India’s overall exports cross all time high of 750 Billion US dollars
During the ASSOCHAM Annual Session 2023, Mr. Piyush Goyal, who serves as the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, declared that India’s merchandise and services exports are expected to surpass US$ 760 billion in the present fiscal year, which will end on March 31, 2023.

  • Mr. Goyal stated that there has been healthy growth in both the merchandise and service sectors. He further said that the G20 presidency has given a unique opportunity to position India globally and this must be leveraged by the industry and businesspersons to showcase India’s business across the world.

Ajay Singh takes over as ASSOCHAM President
SpiceJet CEO Ajay Singh has been appointed as the new president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).He succeeds Sumant Sinha, who recently completed his tenure as Managing Director of Renew Power.

  • Sanjay Nair, Founder and Chairman of Sorin Investment Fund, has been appointed as the new Senior Vice President of ASSOCHAM.
  • Ajay Singh is also the President of Boxing Federation of India and Vice President of International Boxing Association.

Tamil writer Perumal Murugan’s novel ‘Pyre’ about caste-based hatred & violence makes it to International Booker 2023 longlist
Perumal Murugan’s novel ‘Pyre’, which deals with caste-based discrimination, has been nominated for the 2023 International Booker Prize longlist.

  • Originally written in Tamil under the title ‘Pukkuli’, the book follows the story of a couple from different castes who flee their village, triggering a dark and ominous tale. The book was translated into English by Aniruddhan Vasudevan in 2016.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

NASA to send 4 humans to live on Mars from June 2023 
This summer, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is preparing four individuals to live on Mars on June 2023. The four “Martians” will be a part of NASA’s human exploration trip on Mars, even though the American space agency has long sought to send humans to the neighbouring planet.

  • Also, NASA has sending satellites, the InSight lander, a rover mission with the Perseverance rover, the Ingenuity small robotic helicopter, and related delivery systems, all of which are intended to provide the Red Planet with its first comprehensive examination.
  • The four volunteers are a part of a 12-month project to get people ready for visiting Mars. When humans eventually land on Mars, they will do so in a habitat that replicates the circumstances there.

IIT Madras develops pocket-friendly device to detect milk adulteration
In just 30 seconds, a cost-effective and portable 3D paper-based device developed by researchers at IIT Madras can detect milk adulteration. This device is unlike traditional laboratory-based methods and can be used at home with just one millilitre of the liquid sample needed for testing.

  • The device is capable of identifying various commonly used adulterating agents, including but not limited to detergents, soap, hydrogen peroxide, urea, starch, salt, and sodium-hydrogen-carbonate.
