Jammu and Kashmir Paharis to get ST quota: Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in favour of reservation for Paharis and the quota would be implemented in the near future.

  • He said Paharis, Gujjars and Bakarwals earlier faced discrimination because they did not get reservation. He also went on to alleviate fears that reservation for Paharis would adversely affect other backward communities like Gujjars and Bakarwals, who are recognised as STs in Jammu and Kashmir.

Govt plans to set up 100 5G labs in the country, 12 as telecom incubators
A day after 5G services were launched in India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Indian Mobile Congress, the government now plans to set up 5G labs across the country. Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Indian government plans to set up 100 5G labs across the country.

  • Vaishnaw also requested and invited the telecom industry to come together and convert at least 12 of these 100 labs into telecom incubators to train students and do experiments.

No charge for Rupay credit card use on UPI up to Rs 2,000
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said there will be no charge for RuPay credit card use on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for transactions up to ₹2,000.

  • RuPay credit card has been operational for the last four years, and all major banks are enabled and are issuing incremental cards for both commercial and retail segments.
  • RBI has approved linking of RuPay Credit Cards to UPI, which will provide a seamless, digitally enabled credit card lifecycle experience for the customers. Customers will benefit from the ease and the increased opportunity to use their credit cards.


Saudi Arabia wins bid to host 2029 Asian Winter Games at desert megacity
Saudi Arabia was chosen to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a $500 billion futuristic megacity in the desert that planners say will feature a year-round winter sports complex.

  • The Asian Winter Games include competitions for skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey and figure skating — 47 events in all, 28 on snow and 10 on ice, the OCA said.
  • The Asian Winter Games are slated to take place in Trojena, an area of NEOM “where winter temperatures drop below zero celsius and year-round temperatures are generally 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the region”.


Sanjeev Kishore named as Director General of Indian Ordinance Factory
Sanjeev Kishore, a 1985 batch officer of the Indian Ordnance Factory Service (IOFS), has taken over as the director general ordnance (C&S), Ministry of Defence said.

  • Kishore assumed charge of the new role on 1 October, 2022. He replaced M K Garg.
  • Before taking over the charge of DGO (C &S), Kishore was the additional director general ordnance at the Directorate of Ordnance (Coordination & Services), Kolkata, the mininstry said.


Ex-German leader Angela Merkel wins UN refugee prize
The coveted Nansen Award, given out by the United Nations Refugee Agency, was given to former German chancellor Angela Merkel for her “leadership, courage and compassion” in ensuring the protection of hundreds of thousands of desperate people at the height of the Syria crisis.

  • The year 2022 marked a century (100 years) since Fridtjof Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.

The UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award selection committee also honoured four regional winners for 2022:

  • The Nansen Award 2022 regional winner for Africa was given to The Mbera Fire Brigade, an all-volunteer firefighting group in Mauritania led by Ahmedou Ag Albohary.
  • The award for the Americas went to Vicenta González, a women’s rights advocate and activist whose cacao cooperative in Costa Rica empowers local and asylum-seeking women.
  • Meikswe Myanmar, a humanitarian organization that assists communities in need, including internally displaced people was announced as the regional winner for Asia and the Pacific and the regional winner for the Middle East and North Africa was given to Dr.
  • Nagham Hasan, a gynaecologist from Iraq who helps fellow Yazidi women who were forced into slavery by ISIS to recover from their trauma.

Pune IITM scientist Roxy Koll receives 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal
Roxy Mathew Koll, a scientist at the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM),received the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal.

  • Koll was selected for his outstanding research in Earth and space sciences. He will also be conferred as a Fellow of the AGU.
  • AGU is a non-profit organisation that annually recognises a select number of individuals as part of its honours and recognition programme in Earth and space sciences.

Alain Aspect, John F Clauser and Anton Zeilinger awarded Nobel Prize in Physics
The 2022 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to Alain Aspect, John F Clauser and Anton Zeilinger for “experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities and pioneering quantum information science”, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

  • The Nobel laureates in physics have conducted groundbreaking experiments using entangled quantum states, where two particles behave like a single unit even when they are separated. The results have cleared the way for new technology based upon quantum information.
  • Last year the prize was awarded to three scientists — Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi — whose work has helped to explain and predict complex forces of nature, thereby expanding our understanding of climate change.


Indigenously Designed and Developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) inducted into Indian Air Force
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally inducted the indigenously-developed Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) in the Indian Air Force at a ceremony held at Air Force Station, Jodhpur in Rajasthan. LCH would be inducted into the 143 Helicopter Unit.LCH has been named as ‘Prachanda’.

  • LCH has been developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).  It is a state-of-the-art modern combat helicopter, primarily designed for deployment in high-altitude regions. LCH is the only attack helicopter in the world which can land and take-off at an altitude of 5,000 m with a considerable load of weapons and fuel.
  • The induction of indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) will enhance our capability and will boost defence production.

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 launches to International Space Station
NASA’s SpaceX Crew-5 mission launched four humans towards the International Space Station (ISS). NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and John Cassada, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina blasted off into space.

  • They were launched aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon Endurance spacecraft, atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, from Launch Complex 39A, Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
  • Crew-5 mission is the fifth crew rotation mission with SpaceX to the ISS, and the sixth flight of Dragon spacecraft with people as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
  • Crew-5 will conduct interesting scientific research in areas including cardiac health, in order to prepare for human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit and benefit life on Earth.
