Indore becomes first civic body to launch green bonds
Indore Municipal Corporation, ranked top in cleanliness survey for six consecutive years, has become the country’s first civic body to launch green bonds, seeking to raise Rs 244 crore for a 60-mw solar plant at its water pumping station.

  • The public issues of the green bonds will be open for subscription from February 10-14, Pushyamitra Bhargav, mayor of Indore, and Divyank Singh, chief executive of the Indore Smart City Development Commission. 

Agriculture Ministry signs MoU to develop national level digital extension platform
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare signed an MoU in New Delhi with Digital Green under a public-private partnership framework to build a national-level digital extension platform.

  • The platform will host a digital library of curated multi-format multi-lingual content, helping extension workers access. 
  • It will also deliver curated content to farmers on time and upskill the vast network of extension workers for agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, livestock and rural livelihood missions through certified online courses.

Yaya Tso to become Ladakh’s First Biodiversity Heritage Site
Yaya Tso, known as birds’ paradise for its beautiful lake located at an altitude of 4,820 metres, has been proposed as Ladakh’s first biodiversity heritage site (BHS). 

  • The Biodiversity Management Committee, the panchayat of Chumathang village, along with SECURE Himalaya Project recently resolved to declare Yaya Tso as Ladakh’s first BHS under the Biological Diversity Act. 


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Turkey earthquake: Historical ”Gaziantep Castle” in southeastern Turkey collapsed
The earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria badly damaged Gaziantep Castle, a historic site and tourist attraction in southeastern Turkey.

  • The castle collapsed during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in the early hours of February 6.
  • Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu reported that some of the bastions in the east, south and southeast parts of the historical Gaziantep Castle in the central Åžahinbey district were destroyed by the earthquake and the debris was scattered on the road.

India, EU to establish three Working Groups under Trade and Technology Council to deepen ties
India and the European Union announced the establishment of three Working Groups under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, TTC  and their Terms of Reference.

  • They are Working group on Strategic Technologies, Digital Governance and Digital Connectivity, Working Group on Green and  Clean Energy Technologies and Working Group on Trade, Investment and Resilient Value Chains.
  • The TTC with India is only the second such Council for the EU and the first such mechanism for India.  It will be co-chaired on the Indian side by the Ministers for External Affairs, Commerce and Industry and   Communications, Electronics and  Information Technology.

Google unveils ChatGPT rival named ‘Bard’ 
Google has unveiled Bard, its ChatGPT rival that leverages LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), Google’s own language model. 

  • The announcement comes days after CEO Sundar Pichai revealed its development during an earnings call. Prior to the call, Google management called ChatGPT “code red” as the AI-powered platform received positive responses from users across the world. 
  • In a blog post, Google says that it is opening Bard up to “trusted testers” ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is available to test for free. It recently clocked 100 million users in just two months.

Australia’s Aaron Finch announces retirement from International Cricket
Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from the  T20Is, this brings an end to his international cricket career for Australia spanning 12 years. 

  • Earlier, the opening batsman had announced retirement from the 50-over format in September last year. Finch also played five Test matches for Australia.
  • Finch made his international cricket debut in a T20I against England in 2011. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2013.
  • Finch made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2018. Finch became a permanent part of the leadership group in the absence of regular captain Steve Smith and vice-captain Warner.

Indian-American Apsara Iyer elected as president of Harvard Law Review
Apsara Iyer, an Indian-American law student at Harvard University, has been elected as the 137th President of the prestigious Harvard Law Review (HLR) publication.

  • She become thefirst woman from the community to be named to the position in the prestigious publication’s 136-year history.
  • Iyer has previously been involved in the Law School’s Harvard Human Rights Journal and the National Security Journal and is also a member of the South Asian Law Students Association.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Yuva Sangam registration portal launched
The Yuva Sangam registration portal was launched in New Delhi. The Yuva Sangam is an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build close ties between the youth of the North East Region and rest of India under the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.

  • Under the initiative over 20 thousand youth will travel across the country and gain a unique. 
  • The program is an opportunity for the youth of the North East to explore the country. Mr. Reddy stressed that this Wide Cultural Exchange Program will also give an opportunity to the country’s youth to celebrate the ancient culture and natural diversity of India.
