(10x + x^2) – (10x^2 + x) = 54
=> 9x^2 – 9x = 54
=> (x-3)(x+2) = 0
=>x = 3 or x = -2
The original number =10x + x^2 = 10*3 +3*3 = 39
40% of 39 = 15.6

B) 11:14
C) 15:16
D) 14:11

A) 77L
B) 85L
C) 90L
D) 89L
E) None of these
Option B
Solution:
In 25 litres of mixture,
Milk = (10/25)*25 = 10 Litres
Water = 15 litres
After respective additions , in the resulting mixture ,
Water = 15x – 15 +3 = (15x – 12) Litres
Quantity of mixture = 25x – 25 + 18  = (25x – 7) litres
Now,
(15x -12)/(25x-7) = 50/100
=> x = 17/5
Therefore , Initial quantity of the mixture = 25x = 25 *(17/5) = 85 Litres

0.8x + 4 = 0.4y
=> 4y  – 8x = 40
and y – x = 85
=> x = 75 and y = 160
x + y = 235
