In the following question a short passage is given with one of the lines in the passage missing and represented by a blank. Select the best out of the five answer choices given, to make the passage complete and coherent (coherent means logically complete and sound).
The Monetary Policy Committee’s decision, at its maiden meeting, to cut the benchmark repurchase (repo) rate by 25 basis points held no surprise for markets. What had been on watch was the language of the policy statement, the extent of consensus in the committee and the manner in which the new Reserve Bank of India Governor and chairman of the MPC, Urjit Patel, presented the central bank’s positions. ____________________________________________________________________The focus, he signalled, therefore needs to remain on supporting the domestic economy through an accommodative monetary stance. That the MPC has opted to lay primacy on ‘supporting growth’ while keeping its sights firmly trained on the RBI’s central remit to target a medium-term retail inflation objective of 4 per cent, within a band of plus/minus 2 per cent, bodes well. Decision-making by committee is never easy, and given the short time the MPC had since its constitution last month, the lucidity of the policy statement shows its six members have hit the ground running.
A) Even as it expects an improvement in the outlook for food inflation on the back of increased sowing and supply management measures undertaken by the government, the MPC has been cautious in flagging the risks to the trajectory for price gains.
B) In the panel’s opinion, the main factors that could play a contributory role in furthering a fresh ‘cost spiral’ would be the higher house rent allowances mandated by the Seventh Pay Commission, the increase in minimum wages and the possible spillovers through minimum support prices.
C) Articulating the main concern that informed the newly constituted rate-setting panel’s rationale for reducing interest rates, Mr. Patel said the global demand environment was clearly looking far bleaker than previously anticipated, with the forecast for world economic growth set to be downgraded further.
D) But the worsening trade demand could offset the gross value added (GVA) momentum, the MPC noted, while retaining the RBI’s GVA growth forecast of 7.6 per cent.

Constitution of India gave the higher judiciary another important function in addition to adjudication of disputes: to regulate the executive and legislature to stay within the bounds of their powers — to prevent the executive from violating the laws, the Constitution and the fundamental rights of people guaranteed by the Constitution, and the legislature from violating the Constitution. The Supreme Court was anointed the final arbiter of the Constitution, and in 1973, in the landmark Kesavananda Bharati case, it held that even a constitutional amendment could not violate the basic structure of the Constitution. For this reason, the independence of the judiciary from the executive and legislature has been regarded a cornerstone of the Constitution, and the Supreme Court has held it as an inviolable part of the basic structure of the Constitution. _________________________________________________________________________The independence of the judiciary was seen not just as functional independence but independence in manner of appointments.
A) It is on this basis that the Supreme Court, in the Second Judges Case in 1993, took over the power of appointing judges from the executive to itself, holding that the government’s primacy in appointing judges would also compromise the independence of the judiciary.
B) While the Right to Information Act made the judiciary a public authority, the judiciary has stymied the right to information vis-à-vis itself and consistently refused to disclose information on its administrative or judicial functioning.
C) The road to securing judicial accountability is long and hard, but proper accountability for such a powerful and vital organ like the Indian judiciary is essential for the survival of the rule of law and democracy in this country.

______________________________. A 62 -year civil war tore through this northernmost country of South America, taking at least a quarter of a million lives and displacing over six million people. No one was immune from the violence. Families had someone who had either been killed in the fighting or who wore the colours of the army, the FARC, or the right-wing paramilitaries. “In this house everything is ruin,” wrote the poet María Mercedes Carranza. “In this house we are burned alive.” On September 26, the government and the FARC rebels signed an agreement based on the negotiations in Havana to end the war. The landmark accord would bring the FARC fighters out of the forest and into the political process. Crimes committed during the war — by all sides — would be forgiven in the name of peace. The government promised to set aside three million hectares to distribute to landless peasants and small landholders. The FARC would receive funds to help it become a political party, and the government promised to reserve seats in the Congress for it. To ratify this agreement, the government agreed to hold a referendum on October 2. Few expected the turnout to be as low as it was — under 40 per cent, fewer than the percentage that came to the polls in 2014 to elect Colombia’s current President, Juan Manuel Santos — and for the vote to go against the peace agreement. The outcome was very close: 50.23 per cent voted no, and 49.76 per cent voted yes.
A) Even as President Santos and the FARC leadership try to maintain their optimism of a deal, the return of Mr. Uribe suggests that Colombia might turn its back on a real peace.
B) Perhaps the most significant reason is the lack of enthusiasm about the peace agreement in the first place.
C) Colombian activists who supported the deal say that the turnout was low for a number of reasons.
D) Years of negotiation in Havana, Cuba, brought the government of Colombia to a peace deal with the rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Much as we feel it will “last forever” and “this is it”, eventually, as is obvious in every relationship around us, it fades and we are left the issues of compatibility on other levels.
The sparks turn into forest fires as we enter the throes of passion, and the magnetic attraction, newness, and excitement takes over our mind, body and soul.
No two humans integrate their lives seamlessly, and effort has to be made to made to trim rough edges, iron out creases and darn a couple of holes.
Romantics say, “in matters of the heart you must not listen to your head”, and realists say “use your mind when it comes to your heart”.
It’s so heady when we meet someone new and there are sparks and chemistry.

Often, people make a mistake and then add to it by making yet another mistake: by trying to justify their mistake. But what they should actually do on making a mistake is reflect on and seek to discover why they made that mistake in the first place.
If you don’t do that and, instead, you seek to justify your mistake after committing it, you remain just where you were before. _____________________________________
This is a natural fact. It is reflected in a hadith, narrated from Anasibn Malik, according to which the Prophet said, “Every person commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.”
A) The fact is that no human being possesses total knowledge.
B) A person who does not acknowledge his mistakes has to pay the price of continuing to remain stuck in his wrong approach.
C) On the other hand, if you seek to find out why you made that mistake, you will save yourself from repeating it.
D) Moreover, his actions cannot produce meaningful results, and his plans will fail to produce the results that he seeks.

This is the first year in which the Railway Budget will be subsumed in the General Budget. But a specific discussion around what the finance minister stated on December 20, 2016 is helpful. Arun Jaitley suggested that Indian Railways focus on its core competencies — running trains –while outsourcing its other services and operations to increase efficiency and profitability. One hopes that he walks the talk on Wednesday.
True, the Railways user must pay for the services he receives. _____________________. Many parts of states like Sikkim still don’t have rail connectivity.
Railways bureaucrats made 17 zones out of nine so that they could increase their promotions and perks
It logically then follows that GoI should not tax the non-user to support Railways expenses
The 1973 Pay Commission recommended the abolition of bungalow peons. Yet, there are 1,107 serving Railways bigwigs even today.

Worry causes fear, anxiety, tension and stress. _____________________ Worriers become sick and this is manifested in poor health, because of all the problems that are eating into their vitals. And worry is certainly not the same as constructive thinking. If it were, we would have found solutions to most of our problems.
Worry usually occurs when we find ourselves faced with a likely outcome we feel is beyond the scope of our control — an outcome we think will be wholly damaging and detrimental to us.
But how can we be so certain?
In life, there are no wars to be won, only battles to be fought —personal, physical social, psychological and spiritual.

There was going to be heartbreak no matter who won. For a generation of fans like me who are pre- Murray and Djokovic and consider ourselves almost vintage, this was a dream final of the men’s Australian Open. It was yesterday once more.
But Nadal and Federer played like they could give today’s rising stars a lesson or two in elegance, power and how sublime a down the line shot can be. __________________________ . This five set see-saw in a grand slam final is our comfort game for seasons to come.
Rafa looked predictably devastated but perhaps this time he didn’t really feel like masking those emotions, the road to recovery from multiple injuries has been long and not always assured.
But the match was more than that historical statistic, 18th grand slam victory for the Swiss.
It was hard to pick between the two and while I did tilt slightly towards Rafa, all I really hoped was that the runner up was not decimated.
In a reflection of the deep respect that both the players have for each other, while recovering and away from the game, Federer joined Rafa at the launch of the Spaniard’s tennis academy in October last year
These two are by far the nicest humans to play a sport, aggression some of our cricketers can learn is not always the hallmark of a winner.

The ideals and motto of the Divine Life Society — “Serve, love, give, purify, meditate and realise” — are reflected in the life and work of Swami Chidananda Saraswati. His spiritual journey began on a Buddha Purnima day in 1943 inspired by his mentor Swami Sivananda.
Chidananda’s fervour to serve found the perfect outlet in the welfare work he undertook at Rishikesh. ________________________ He carried him all the way to the ashram on his shoulders. He served him through the day, as a mother would care for a child.
A) According to Chidananda love is the law of life and to love is to fulfil the adage: “To live is to love”.
B) He believes that service alone can purify and prepare the soul for deep contemplation Astory is often recounted of how Chidananda found a leprosy-afflicted person on the Hardwar-Rishikesh road.
C) True religion is not about ritualistic observances, baths or pilgrimages, so the Swami asks us to heed the universal psychological law: Hatred breeds hatred, love begets love, and fear breeds fear.

The Florida couple, who took their conjugal vows attired in oxygen helmets and standing 20 feet underwater, might have been making the point that matrimony can be a condition in which the unwary may find themselves out of their depth, if not plunged in a sea of troubles.
Marriages a la mode often seek to convey a message. Perhaps in order to suggest that those tying the nuptial knot might find that they have fashioned a noose around their necks, an Italian couple reportedly resorted to gallows humour on their wedding day.
__________________________ Going one worse, the groom turned up in a coffin. The funeral frills apparently were meant to symbolise that matrimony is a deadly serious business.
A) The bride turned up at the altar dressed in black and wearing a corsage of chrysanthemums, traditionally considered funeral flowers in Italy.
B) Unimpressed, the authorities took a dim view of the proceedings and charged the newly-weds with causing a public nuisance and disturbing the peace.
C) A case for the defence, however, could be made out that an element of public disturbance is an in-built feature of courtship and marriage, which a cynic divided into three stages

If one were to explore the philosophical basis of normative ethics to examine where terrorism falls on the moral spectrum, it will become evident that terrorism, sabotage and guerrilla tactics are all acts of violence, essentially no different from overt war in the conventional sense. Terrorist attacks amount to war by stealth, shadowy figures replacing uniformed combatants, attacking innocents to send a message to the real targets who are out of reach. All acts of violence spring from fear, uncertainty and hate, as well as a disregard for the lives of fellow human beings.
The end is all-important and the means do not matter to the violators. A cause is invoked in the name of a group, sect or territory. ______________________ Aqualitative transformation must, therefore, begin from within, where the conflict originates.
A) The starting point, however, is often an individual going berserk, resolute in his own self-indulgent eyes but losing touch with reality.
B) Violence as a means to achieve ends is both impractical and immoral.
C) It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all.
D) Ultimately, you can’t reach good ends through evil means, because the means represent the seed and the end represents the tree.

Much before the explosion of Indian writing in English in the post-90s, Ruskin Bond had captivated readers, both the young and the old, with his sylvan stories. He continues to do so. Now Aleph has published a new collection of Bond stories, Small Towns, Big Stories.
What’s the magic that draws one into in these vibrant, simple and poignant stories? ________________________ Unlike a Roald Dahl, another favourite author of the young and the old, Bond does not surprise you with the twist in the tale. He is often predictable, but his story-telling is inimitable.
A) As Bond recalls when he was writing the Deoli story, he thought he was making up the name, but later discovered that there were at least five Deolis in India—one in Rajasthan, one in Maharashtra, one in Orissa, and two in Madhya Pradesh.
B) Far from the madding crowds, Ruskin Bond revels in the chronicles of small towns.
