Indo-Maldives Joint Military Exercise “Ekuverin” Commences at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand
The 12th edition of joint military exercise “Ex Ekuverin” between the Indian Army & the Maldives National Defence Force has commenced at Chaubatia, Uttarakhand from 11 to 24 June 2023.

  • A platoon strength contingent from Indian Army and Maldives National Defence Force will be participating in 14 days long exercise. The exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability in Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorism Operations under the UN mandate and carry out joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations.


BANKING & FINANCE

India tops digital payments rankings globally, shows MyGovIndia data
India with 89.5 million digital transactions in the year 2022 has topped the list of five countries in digital payments, according to data from MyGovIndia.

  • As per the data, India in the year 2022 accounting for 46 per cent of the global real-time payments, adding that the digital payment transactions in India is more than the other four leading countries combined.
  • Second, on the list is Brazil which amounted to 29.2 million transactions followed by China with 17.6 million transactions.
  • On number 4 is Thailand with 16.5 million digital transactions followed by South Korea with 8 million worth of transactions, the data from MyGovIndia has stated.

EPFO is set to be an affiliate member of ISSA and gain worldwide recognition
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation will soon gain access to professional guidelines, expert knowledge, services and support from the International Social Security Association (ISSA) for its pension subscribers while gaining international recognition as a full administrative social security institution.

  • The move comes after the central board of trustees of EPFO gave its go ahead to the retirement fund body to change its membership status with ISSA from associate member since 1962 to affiliate member now.

ADB, India sign $130 million loan to promote horticulture in Himachal Pradesh
The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $130 million loan to increase agricultural productivity, improve access to irrigation and promote horticulture agribusinesses to raise farmers’ income in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

  • The project interventions will help increase the income and resilience to the effects of climate change of at least 15,000 farm households across seven districts of the state namely Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Sirmour, Solan, and Una, the release said.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Moody’s sees India’s GDP expanding 6%-6.3% in Q1FY24 
Moody’s said the Indian economy is expected to clock a 6-6.3 per cent growth in June quarter, and flagged risks of fiscal slippage arising from weaker-than-expected government revenues in FY24.

  • Moody’s growth estimate is lower than the 8 per cent projection for the first quarter made by the Reserve Bank of India last week.
  • For the full 2023-24 and 2024-25 fiscals, Moody’s projects economic growth at 6.1 per cent and 6.3 per cent, respectively.


SPORTS

Uruguay beats Italy to win maiden Under-20 World Cup title
Forward Luciano Rodriguez scored late as Uruguay secured their first Under-20 World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Italy .

  • Rodriguez struck with an 86th-minute header as the Celeste ended a run of four consecutive triumphs for European teams in the tournament.

Australia crowned ICC World Test Champions with win over India
Australia secured a commanding 209-run victory over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at The Oval, thus earning the title of World Test Champions.

  • The match witnessed stellar performances from Travis Head and Steve Smith, who scored superb centuries in the first innings to give Australia an early advantage.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2023 revealed
Ireland’s Harry Tector has won the ICC’s Men’s Player Of The Month award for May 2023, beating off competition from Pakistan star Babar Azam and Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto. Tector has been one of the rising stars in Ireland cricket and was in top form during the ODI series against Bangladesh recently. The 23-year-old was 21 not out in the first match, that got washed out, but it was in the second ODI he showed his class.

  • 19-year-old Thipatcha Putthawong has become the latest recipient of the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for May 2023, after her countrywoman Naruemol Chaiwai won it last month.

Indian film ‘When Climate Change Turns Violent’ wins WHO award
A documentary titled ‘When Climate Change Turns Violent’ has won a special prize in the ‘Health for All’ category at the 4th Annual Health for All Film Festival held at the World Healtth Organization headquarters in Geneva.

  • The documentary has been directed by Vandita Saharia of Rajasthan. She was the only Indian among the winners. The 4.32-minute documentary focuses on the relationship between domestic violence, climate change and human trafficking.
