Disaster Management boosted with Amit Shah’s unveiling of ₹8,000 Crore schemes
Union home minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting with ministers of disaster management from the states and union territories to discuss disaster risk reduction and strengthen the country’s disaster management system. During the meeting, Shah announced three major schemes worth over ₹8,000 crore to bolster disaster management efforts across the nation.

  • The first scheme, valued at ₹5,000 crore, aims to expand and modernize fire services in states. The project intends to enhance firefighting capabilities, upgrade equipment, and improve infrastructure to effectively respond to fire emergencies.
  • The second scheme, with a budget of ₹2,500 crore, focuses on reducing the risk of urban flooding in seven of India’s most populous metros, including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune. The project aims to implement measures to mitigate the impact of flooding in urban areas, safeguarding lives and property.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India, UAE target $100 billon non-oil trade by 2030
India and the UAE set a target to increase the non-oil trade from $48 billion to $100 billion by 2030.

  • The goal to achieve $100 billion non-oil trade was set in the first meeting of the Joint Committee of India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).The agreement was implemented on May 1 last year.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI opens sub-office at Kohima, to increase presence in north east
The Reserve Bank opened a sub-office at Kohima, and announced its aim to soon have an office in Itanagar to strengthen its presence in North East India.

  • Deputy Governor Michael Debabrata Patra inaugurated the office in the capital of Nagaland, which will help expand the central bank’s presence in the north-eastern region.
  • In the north-eastern region, RBI is present in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Nagaland. RBI’s Guwahati office will continue to cater to the needs of Arunachal Pradesh till the office in Itanagar is opened, it said.

Equitas Holdings surrenders NBFC Licence to RBI, registration cancelled
The Reserve Bank of India said Equitas Holdings Ltd has surrendered its NBFC licence, and accordingly its registration has been cancelled.

  • The RBI, in the exercise of powers conferred on it under Section 45-IA (6) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, has therefore cancelled its CoR (certificate of registration).
  • As the company does not hold public funds therefore it may have voluntarily surrendered its certificate of registration, it added.

Forbes’ Global 2000 List: Reliance rises by Eight positions to attain 45th Rank
Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd climbed eight spots to the 45th rank, the highest for an Indian company on Forbes’ latest Global 2000 list of public companies worldwide. The Global 2000 ranks the largest companies in the world using four metrics: sales, profits, assets, and market value, Forbes said while releasing the 2023 ranking of the world’s top 2,000 companies.

  • JPMorgan, America’s biggest bank with USD 3.7 trillion in assets, is at the top of the list for the first time since 2011 and has emerged stronger from this spring’s regional banking crisis, with more deposits and opportunistic acquisition of the failed First Republic Bank, it said.
  • Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway that topped the list last year, fell to the 338th position in the latest list due to unrealised losses in its investment portfolio.
  • Saudi oil behemoth Aramco is at 2nd position followed by three giant-sized state-owned Chinese banks. Technology giants Alphabet and Apple are at 7th and 10th place, respectively.

Epson India signs Rashmika Mandanna as brand ambassador
Printer company Epson India has signed actor Rashmika Mandanna as its brand ambassador. 

  • The actress will collaborate with the company to promote its products in a multi-media campaign for its ‘EcoTank’ printers this month.

Paterson Joseph won the RSL Christopher Bland Prize 2023
Actor-author Paterson Joseph has won the RSL Christopher Bland Prize 2023 for his debut novel ‘The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho’.

  • RSL Christopher Bland Prize is an annual award which honours a debut writer for their work of fiction or non-fiction, published at the age of 50 or over.
  • The award carries a cash prize of 10,000 Pound sterling or approx 10 lakh rupees.

GSITI Hyderabad Receives “Athi Uttam” Accreditation
The Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), operating under the Ministry of Mines, has received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board of Education and Training (NABET) in recognition of the yeomen services it has rendered and high standards maintained in the field of earth science training.

  • The assessment was made on the basis of the inspection of all standard operating procedures and methodologies followed by the institute in different levels.
  • The team from Capacity Building Commission (CBC), NABET and Quality Control of India conducted the on-site assessment and awarded the Certificate of Accreditation with the grading of Athi Uttam.

Child rights advocate Lalitha Natarajan wins 2023 Iqbal Masih Award
Chennai-based lawyer and activist Lalitha Natarajan has won US Department of Labor’s 2023 Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labour. 

  • Natarajan was presented the award by Consul General Judith Ravin at a ceremony in the US Consulate General in Chennai.
  • As a member of the Child Welfare Committee (North Zone) under the Department of Social Defence, Tamil Nadu, Natarajan ensures that child labor victims receive compensation as per the Child Labor Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Sanshodhak’ 4th warship of Indian Navy launched
‘Sanshodhak’, the fourth of four ships of Survey Vessels (Large) (SVL) Project, being built by L&T/ GRSE for Indian Navy was launched at Kattupalli, Chennai. The chief guest of the Launch Ceremony was VAdm Adhir Arora, Chief Hydrographer to Government of India.

  • In keeping with the Naval maritime tradition, Smt Tanvi Arora launched the ship to the chanting of invocation from Atharva Veda. The ship named ‘Sanshodhak’, meaning ‘Researcher’, signifies the primary role of the ship as a Survey Vessel.
