Social Justice Ministry launches SMILE-75 initiative
Recognising the persisting problem of destitution and beggary, Government of India has formulated ‘SMILE’- a comprehensive scheme meant for beggars. SMILE stands for ‘Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise’ which also includes sub-schemes, under which a comprehensive rehabilitation for persons engaged in begging is done.

  • This scheme covers identification, rehabilitation, provision of medical facilities, counselling, education, skill development for decent job and self-employment or entrepreneurship.
  • The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, in the spirit of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, has identified 75 Municipal Corporations to implement comprehensive rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of begging under ‘SMILE-75 Initiative.
  • The objective of SMILE- 75 is to make our cities or town and municipal areas begging-free and make a strategy for comprehensive rehabilitation of the persons engaged in the act of begging through the coordinated action of various stakeholders.

Tamil Nadu notifies fifth elephant reserve in Agasthyamalai landscape
Taking a big leap in elephant conservation, the Tamil Nadu forest department’s proposal to declare 1,197.48 sq. km in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli as Agasthyamalai Elephant Reserve has reached fruition with the Union environment ministry notifying it.

  • This is the fifth elephant reserve in Tamil Nadu.India has 31 elephant reserves. The announcement was made on World Elephant Day 2022 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
  • Now, the forest department will get additional funding under the centrally-sponsored Project Elephant. Although the area is already protected as a reserve forest or wildlife sanctuary, elephant reserve status will focus on the protection and conservation of elephants as indicator species representing a healthy ecosystem. The elephant corridors will be identified and better management practices can be adopted.


Mexican President proposes 3 men commission for world peace including PM Modi
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has proposed a 3-men commission comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Pope Francis for global peace.

  • The Mexican President is planning to submit a written proposal to the UN to create the commission, made up of three world leaders, including PM Modi, to promote a world truce for a period of five years.
  • The Mexican President said, the aim of the commission is to present a proposal to stop the wars around the world and reach an agreement to seek a truce for at least five years. He said, the move will help governments around the world dedicate themselves to support their people, especially the people who are suffering the most from the war and its effects.


RBI issues guidelines to regulate digital lending
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the first set of guidelines for digital lending, to crack down on illegal activities by certain players. This follows the recommendation of a Working Group on Digital Lending (WGDL) that had submitted its report recently.

  • As per the new norms, all loan disbursals and repayments will be required to be executed only between the bank accounts of the borrower and the Regulated Entities (RE) – such as a bank or a non-banking financial company – without any pass-through or pool account of the Lending Service Providers (LSP) or any third party.
  • The new rules mandates that fees or charges payable to LSPs in the credit intermediation process will be paid directly by the bank or NBFC and not by the borrower.

SBI to run Indian Visa Centres in Bangladesh for two more years
The State Bank of India (SBI) will manage the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Bangladesh for two more years.

  • The agreement to extend the operations for two more years was signed between the officials of the SBI and the High Commission of India in Dhaka.
  • SBI Bangladesh country head of operations Amit Kumar represented the SBI while the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Dr. Binoy George represented the High Commission of India.


Retail Inflation eases to 6.71% in July
India’s retail inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) eased to 6.71% in July 2022 compared with 7.01% in preceding month.

  • Inflation eased mainly due to easing prices in the food & beverages section. The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), or the inflation in the food basket, showed a month-on-month fall during July to 6.75%, from 7.75% in June, the data revealed.
  • The CPI continues to remain above the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upper margin of 6% for the seventh consecutive month. The government has mandated the central bank to maintain retail inflation at 4% with a margin of 2% on either side.


Khelo India Women’s Hockey League 22 for Under-16 begins in New Delhi
In the first Khelo India Women’s Hockey League (U-16) , four matches were played in the opening session of the tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.

  • The League will see 16 teams divided into Pool A and Pool B vie for top honours. This will be the 1st phase of the League which will go on till 23rd August with each winning team being awarded three points, one point for each team in the event of a draw and zero points for the losing side.
  • In the opening match played between Team SAI and Bhai Behlo Hockey Academy Bhagta, Team SAI made it one-sided affair making 30- nil score line against the opponent.

Tata Steel Chess India to Introduce Women’s Tournament in 4th Edition
The 4th edition of the Tata Steel Chess India tournament will be held in Kolkata from November 29 to December 4, 2022.

  • For the first time, a separate women’s section has been added in the tournament, which had only the Open section so far. Tata Steel Chess India (rapid and blitz) is one of the most important chess tournaments in India.

Inaugural edition of Women’s IPL to be held in March 2023
The much-awaited Women’s IPL will be starting from March 2023 to be held in a one-month window and in all likelihood with five teams, a senior BCCI official confirmed the development.

  • The BCCI bigwigs have discussed the issue and a March window has been found for the tournament after the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.


Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Rios of Argentina appointed leader of UNMOGIP
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed a veteran Argentinean naval officer as Head of Mission and Chief Military Observer for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

  • Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Ríos of Argentina succeeds Major General José Eladio Alcaín of Uruguay, who will shortly complete his assignment, a statement issued.
  • The statement added that Rear Admiral Ríos has had a distinguished career in the Argentinean Navy since 1988, when he graduated from the Navy Academy as Middleshipman.
