Telangana High Court declares Telangana Eunuchs Act, 1329 Fasli as unconstitutional
The Telangana High Court recently made a landmark judgment, declaring the Telangana Eunuchs Act as unconstitutional.

  • The Act, which had been in place since 1919, was deemed discriminatory and a violation of the human rights of the transgender community.

DAC approves procurement of 26 Rafale Marine Aircraft and Additional Scorpene Submarines
The defence ministry approved the proposed procurement of 26 Naval variants of Rafale jets from France, people familiar with the development said.The project was cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day visit to Paris.

  • The DAC, which is the defence ministry’s highest decision-making body on procurement, also cleared a proposal for the construction of three more Scorpene submarines in India.
  • The mega defence projects are expected to be announced after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

Kui language inclusion in 8th schedule gets approval of Odisha govt
The Odisha state cabinet gave an approval to a proposal which recommended the inclusion of the Kui language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India. The cabinet is of opinion that the inclusion of language to 8th schedule will not have any financial implications.

  • Approximately 46 languages are spoken by the tribal population in Odisha, India. Among them is the Kui language, also known as Kandh, Khondi, Kanda, Kodu, or Kuinga. Kui is a South-Eastern Dravidian language primarily spoken by the Kandhas or Kondhs, residing in the hilly and forested areas of Odisha.

European Investment Bank keen to extend 1 billion euro finance for green hydrogen and renewable energy projects in India
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced its support for India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission by offering a loan facility of up to €1 billion. 

  • The loan aims to assist India in developing its nascent green hydrogen ecosystem and renewable energy projects.
  • In this regard, EIB Vice-President Kris Peeters will make a four-day business visit to India this week to strengthen cooperation with the Indian public and private sectors and discuss EIB support for clean energy investment and its transport in the country, the bank said.

Bank of Baroda rolls out MSSC scheme for women
Bank of Baroda has announced the introduction of the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate (MSSC) Scheme, a new initiative which was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 for the benefit of women.

  • MSSC is a 2-year deposit scheme, which offers an interest rate of 7.5% per annum. It is valid only till March 31, 2025.
  • Bank of Baroda is the third bank to announce this facility after Canara Bank and Bank of India along with Post Office.

Elon Musk launches AI firm xAI
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, launched his long-teased artificial intelligence startup xAI, unveiling a team comprised of engineers from the same big U.S. technology firms that he hopes to challenge in his bid to build an alternative to ChatGPT.

  • Reports indicate that the xAI team comprises engineers from major tech companies, including some individuals from rival firms such as OpenAI, the company behind the launch of ChatGPT. The launch of the AI startup coincided with the unveiling of its website by a team of engineers who had previously worked at Google (owned by Alphabet), Microsoft, and OpenAI.

India’s overall exports in June 2023 estimated at 60.09 Billion dollars 
India’s overall exports in June 2023 is estimated to be 60.09 Billion dollars. Trade deficit has improved by 28.26 percent during April to June 2023 to 22.59 Billion dollars from 31.49 Billion dollars in April to June 2022. Electronic Goods export witnessed an impressive growth of 47.1 percent in April-June 2023 respectively over corresponding period last year.

  • Agricultural exports also registered robust growth. Spices rose by 18.2 percent while exports of Fruits and Vegetables were up by 14.1 percent and Oil Seeds were up by 25.1 percent in April-June 2023 over April-June 2022. Drugs and pharma export registered 5.10 percent growth in April to June 2023 respectively as compared to the same period last year.

Australia picks first female central bank head to shepherd through reform. Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Michele Bullock would head the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), having chosen not to reappoint Governor Philip Lowe for a second term.

  • Lowe will leave on Sept. 17, marking the end of his 43-year career at the bank. The decision comes as Lowe is due to accompany Chalmers to a Group of 20 meeting in India next week.

Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district receives GI certificate for Authoor Betel leaves
The Tamil Nadu State Agriculture Marketing Board and NABARD Madurai Agribusiness Incubation Forum have awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate to the Authoor betel leaves from Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu.

  • The certificate is granted in the name of Authoor Vattara Vetrilai Vivasayigal Sangam.
  • The certificate is granted in the name of Authoor Vattara Vetrilai Vivasayigal Sangam. This GI recognition opens up new avenues for marketing the Authoor betel leaves, enabling their reach in both domestic and international markets, tapping into their marketing potential.
