Government signs MoU with 27 steel companies, kickstarting Rs 6,322-crore PLI scheme
The Ministry of Steel signed 57 MoUs’ with 27 companies for specialty steel under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.

  • Under the PLI scheme, the government has approved Rs. 6322 crore to give a new impetus to the Steel sector.
  • After signing the agreements, the Union minister for steel Jyotiraditya Scindia commended the initiatives of the participating companies in the PLI Scheme for specialty steel.

2 Indian places grabs spot in list of World’s Greatest Places of 2023
India’s Mayurbhanj and Ladakh, which have been chosen for their endangered tigers and historic temples, as well as their adventures and cuisine, respectively, are two of the 50 locations which are featured in the TIME Magazine’s list of World’s Greatest Places in 2023

  • As TIME Magazine revealed its list of the “World’s Best Places of 2023,” the Mayurbhanj region of Odisha and the Union Territory of Ladakh both made the cut.
  • Although the travel industry is back in full force in 2023, it was noticed that there have been some significant changes in the way and places we visit. 

Bihar has Lowest Literacy Rate followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan: Ministry of Education
According to the data shared by the Ministry of Education, Bihar (61.8 %) has the lowest literacy, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65.3 %) and Rajasthan (66.1 %). Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India at 94%, followed by Lakshadweep at 91.85% and Mizoram at 91.33%.

  • The literacy rate in rural India is 67.77 per cent as compared to 84.11 per cent in urban India. 
  • To improve adult literacy rates, a centrally sponsored scheme called Saakshar Bharat was implemented in rural areas of 404 districts in 26 states and one union territory, which had a female literacy rate of 50% or below according to Census 2001.

Ministry of Rural Development signs MoU with Ministry of Ayush for skilling of rural youth and empowering women
Ministry of Ayush and Ministry of Rural development signed Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in developing skilled personnel by imparting training to rural poor youth and women’s for Ayush healthcare system under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). 

  • Apart from this a course for training of rural youth as panchakarma technicians/assistant will be started on pilot basis. The MoU valid for three years. 

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya flags off 75 Trucks for countrywide Awareness Drive to eliminate TB
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya flagged off 75 trucks with TB awareness messages across the country at the Partnership for Action against Tuberculosis (PAcT) event in New Delhi.

  • Dr Mandaviya lauded the corporates, NGOs, political leaders and individuals for their contribution towards a TB-free India by becoming Ni-Kshay Mitra. He said, currently, 71 thousand Ni-Kshay Mitras are supporting over 10 lakh TB patients through nutritional support and other means.
  • Under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the Minister also distributed Nutritional Baskets to TB patients at the event.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

ICC issues arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin over Ukraine war crimes
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

  • The bold legal move will obligate the court’s 123 member states to arrest Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory. 


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

OECD raises FY24 India growth forecast to 5.9 per cent
The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has revised upwards its growth estimate for India by 20 basis points to 5.9 per cent for FY24.

  • In its latest interim outlook released, titled “Fragile Recovery”, OECD said, “India’s growth is projected to moderate to about 6 per cent in FY2023-24, amid tighter financial conditions before picking up to recover to around 7 per cent in FY 2024-25.”
  • OECD expects India’s gross domestic product (GDP) to grow at 6.9 per cent in FY23 against 7 per cent estimated by the Central Statistical Organisation. In the December quarter of FY23, the economy grew 4.4 per cent year-on-year. 


SPORTS

Irani Cup: Rest of India beat Madhya Pradesh to win title
In the final of the Irani Cup 2022/23, Team Rest of India secured their 30th title win in the Indian domestic tournament, continuing their dominant performance. 

  • They defeated Madhya Pradesh by 238 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who showcased brilliant batting skills across both innings, was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Tamil writer Sivasankari gets selected for Saraswati Samman for the year 2022 for her book Survya Vamsam
Tamil writer Sivasankari has been selected for Saraswati Samman for the year 2022 for her book Survya Vamsam. It is a book of memoirs in Tamil language and was published in 2019. 

  • Saraswati Samman instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1991 is recognized as the most prestigious and the highest literary award in the country. It carries an award money of 15 lakh rupees, a Citation and a Plaque.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Svaya Robotics develops 1st indigenous quadruped robot, exoskeleton in India
Hyderabad-based Svaya Robotics has developed India’s first indigenous quadruped (four-legged) robot and exoskeleton for the defense sector as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

  • The indigenous robots and wearable exoskeletons were developed by Hyderabad-based Svaya Robotics in collaboration with the DRDO Labs,  Research and Development Establishment (R&DE), Pune, and the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru, as technology demonstrators with their design inputs.
  • Both are dual-use robots and have multiple use cases in both Industry and healthcare.
