‘Kashi’ declared first tourism & cultural capital of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
‘Kashi’(Varanasi) has been declared the first tourism and cultural capital of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The declaration was made by a meeting of the SCO heads of Tourism Administrations held in Varanasi.

  • This recognition will bring the city to greater prominence on the global tourist map. The initiative will garner more attention by highlighting the spiritualism, mysticism, and learning of Kashi which is also the cradle of Indian civilization, statement issued by the tourism ministry.

PM Modi inaugurates the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Global Millets (Shri Anna) Conference’ and said millets can help tackle challenges of food security as well as food habits and asked farm scientists to work towards increasing the share of nutri-cereals in the national food basket.

  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM). The declaration was based on India’s proposal.
  • All central government ministries/departments, states/UTs, farmers, start-ups, exporters, retail businesses and other stakeholders are being engaged to promote and spread awareness about the benefits of millets (Shree Anna) for the cultivator, consumer and climate.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren launches Jharniyojan portal for employment registration
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, inaugurated the Jharniyojan Portal, created by the Department of Labour Planning, Training and Skill development, in the CM’s chamber at the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly.

  • Through the http://jharniyojan.jharkhand.gov.in portal, the government will try to provide a platform to employers and candidates looking for employment.
  • Employers can share information about their business and manpower related to it on the portal and candidates will be able to register themselves and find employment suiting their profile.

CM Ashok Gehlot announces formation of 19 new districts, 3 new divisions in Rajasthan
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced his government’s decision to form 19 new districts and three new divisions in the state, earmarking Rs 2,000 crore for development of infrastructure for them.

  • This is the first time since 2008 that new districts are being carved out, taking the number of districts to 50 in the state.
  • Gehlot made the announcement in the Rajasthan assembly, which also passed the 2023-24 Budget with a voice vote.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Global Terrorism Index 2023: Afghanistan tops the list of most impacted country by Terrorism
Afghanistan retains the top spot in the list of country impacted by terrorism in the new Global Terrorism Index report. Afghanistan has topped for the fourth consecutive year, despite attacks and deaths falling by 75 per cent and 58 per cent, respectively. Afghanistan followed by Burkina Faso, Somalia, Mali and Syria.

  • India ranked 13th on the index, marking only a marginal decrease from the previous year.According to the GTI report, Afghanistan recorded 633 fatalities in 2022, despite terrorism-related deaths declining by 866 in 2022.
  • Following the Taliban’s takeover of the nation, GTI claimed that the Islamic State-Khorasan (Daesh) had become “the most active terrorist group” in Afghanistan. The group was responsible for 422 deaths in 2022, or nearly 67% of all terrorism-related fatalities in the nation as a whole.

Wabag wins Rs 800 cr World Bank, AIIB funded project in Bangladesh
Va Tech Wabag has secured an order worth about Rs. 800 crore towards Design, Build and Operate (DBO) for Reconstruction, Expansion and Operation of Pagla Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 200 Million Litres per Day (MLD) at Pagla in the City of Dhaka, Bangladesh for Dhaka Water Supply & Sewerage Authority (Dhaka WASA).

  • The project is funded by Multi-lateral Funding Agencies like World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) under Dhaka Sanitation Improvement Project (DSIP).
  • The scope of the project includes Design, Engineering, Supply, Construction, Installation and Commissioning of the 200 MLD STP followed by Operation & Maintenance (O&M) for a period of 60 months. This project has the potential to be expanded to 600 MLD in the future, fuelled by city’s growing needs.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India Post signs MoU with Shiprocket to enhance last-mile e-commerce penetration
India Post, India’s leading postal service provider, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shiprocket, a leading logistics aggregator company, to enhance its last-mile delivery services for various e-commerce products.

  • This partnership between India Post and Shiprocket will provide shipping and last-mile delivery services to Shiprocket’s three lakh strong seller base which includes startups and a large number of small and medium businesses.
  • The MoU marks a significant milestone for taking e-commerce to the last mile and is expected to benefit millions of customers all over country.


SPORTS

Tim Paine announces retirement from cricket at 38
Former Australia test cricket captain Tim Paine has announced his retirement following the conclusion of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield first-class match against Queensland.

  • Wicketkeeper Paine captained Australia in 23 tests between early 2018 and 2021, playing 35 tests overall. He became Australia’s 46th test skipper after Steve Smith had his captaincy stripped in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal on Australia’s 2018 tour of South Africa.
