India, Maldives ink seven MoUs to implement community development projects
India and Maldives signed seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for projects to be built under the Indian grant assistance scheme for the High Impact Community Development Project through local bodies (HICDP).
- The projects launched under the MoUs will strengthen the Government’s efforts in fostering socio-economic development in local communities by promoting health and wellbeing, empowerment of youth and preservation and protection of culture and heritage.
‘Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization’ Conference held in Surat
The three-day “Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization” conference held in Surat.
- Under the clarion call of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), given by Hon’ble Prime Minister to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence, the event is being organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, in collaboration with Surat Smart City Corporation Development Ltd.
- An awards distribution ceremony was organised, during the inaugural wherein award winners of the India Smart Cities Awards Contest (ISAC) 2020 were felicitated. These awards were earlier announced through virtual conference in 2021.Surat and Indore were given the Best city award, while Uttar Pradesh was awarded the Best State.
- The event also featured release of Urban Outcomes Framework 2022 including, ‘Ease of Living’, ‘Municipal Performance Index’, ‘Data Maturity and ClimateSmart Cities Assessment Framework. Ministry’s integrated data portal AMPLIFI, which will provide valuable data about Indian cities, was also launched. Further, Smart Cities Mission also launched a comprehensive dashboard with Outcome Output Management Framework (OOMF) dashboard in GMIS during the event.
Telangana govt launches first space-tech framework policy in metaverse
The Telangana government, April 19, launched its first apace-tech Framework, with a vision to establish the state as a “globally recognised one-stop destination for space technology”.
- The framework aims to encourage private participation in the space industry in line with the recent reforms by the Union government. The event was hosted on metaverse, making it the first such official event in India.
- A space-themed metaverse environment has been custom developed along with custom avtars of the key dignitaries for the launch event. The attendees will join the event using their avtars and interact with the fellow participants – all in Metaverse.
World’s highest tunnel connecting Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh to be built by BRO
The Border Roads Organisation will construct the world’s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 feet to connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh, BRO Director General Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhary said.
- The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will start the construction of the tunnel connecting Himachal Pradesh to Zanskar Valley in Ladakh by July this year.
- The Centre has already made ‘Project Yojak’ of BRO to execute this ambitious project.This tunnel, to be completed by 2025, will change the economy of Zanskar Valley, the official added.
First IT Training & Services centre of Ethosh Digital inaugurated in Leh
Ladakh Additional Director General of Police SS Khandare has inaugurated the first IT Training and Services centre of Ethosh Digital, in Leh.
- Ethosh Digital is a California-based Multinational Company, working in the field of digital communications and AR-VR products.
- Aseem Foundation, a Pune-based NGO, working in India’s border regions in the fields of Education, entrepreneurship, health, sports and sustainable development has helped Ethosh Digital to establish the first IT office in Ladakh.

Tropical Storm Megi wreaked havoc on the Philippines, killing at least 167 people in landslides and floods.
- According to the national disaster organisation, another 110 persons are missing, and 1.9 million people have been impacted.
- Hillside avalanches and overflowing rivers wreaked havoc on the villages surrounding Baybay city in central Leyte province.

Nexo and Mastercard launch ‘world first’ crypto-backed payment card
Nexo, a leading regulated institution for digital assets, is partnering with Mastercard to launch the world’s first crypto-backed payment card that will allow users to spend without selling their digital assets.
- Nexo’s zero-cost credit will be available to eligible Nexo clients in Europe.
- The Card is linked to a Nexo-provided, crypto-backed credit line that allows cardholders to use their digital assets as collateral rather than selling them. The credit line is dynamic and can use multiple assets as collateral, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether.
World Bank report says extreme poverty in India declines by 12.3 percentage points during 2011-2019
Poverty in India is 12.3 percentage points lower in 2019 as compared to 2011. The poverty headcount rate has declined from 22.5 percent in 2011 to 10.2 percent in 2019.
- According to policy research working paper of World Bank, Poverty reduction was higher in rural areas as compared to urban India. Rural poverty dropped by 14.7 percent while urban poverty declined by 7.9 percentage points during 2011 to 2019.
- According to the study, farmers with small landholding sizes have experienced higher income growth. Real incomes for farmers with the smallest landholdings have grown by 10 percent in annualized terms between the two survey rounds in 2013 and 2019 compared to a 2 percent growth for farmers with the largest landholding.

India’s March WPI inflation accelerates to record 14.55%
India’s wholesale price-based inflation quickened to 14.55 per cent in March from 13.11 per cent in February amid hardening of fuel prices.
- Retail inflation for March has also climbed to 6.95 per cent, a 17-month high, as food prices went up.The full impact of local fuel prices will begin to show in subsequent months.
- Fuel prices were up 34.52% on the year versus 31.50% in February. The food index rose 8.71 per cent in March compared to 8.47 per cent in February. The food index comprises food articles from primary articles and food products from manufactured products.
Retail inflation spikes to 6.95% in Mar; IIP grows 1.7% in Feb
The country’s retail inflation, which is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to 6.95 per cent in the month of March.The retail inflation for the month of February was 6.07 per cent.
- Separately, India’s factory output, measured in terms of Index of Industrial Production (IIP), witnessed a growth of 1.7 per cent in February, two separate data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) showed.
- This the third consecutive month that the CPI data has breached the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upper margin of 6 per cent. The government has mandated the central bank to maintain retail inflation at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side for a five-year period ending March 2026.

Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi stepped down under pressure from Saudi Arabia and is now under de-facto house arrest, The Wall Street Journal reports.
- Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud allegedly handed a written decree to Hadi on the sidelines of the talks in Riyadh, which set out provisions for the delegation of powers to the presidential council, the newspaper said citing Saudi and Yemeni officials.
Lt Gen Manoj C Pande named next Army Chief
Lt Gen Manoj C Pande has been appointed the next Chief of the Army. He will take over on April 30, the day General MM Naravane superannuates.
- Pande is currently the senior-most officer in the Army after Gen Naravane. Before taking charge as Vice Chief of Army Staff on February 1, Lt Gen Pande was heading the Eastern Army Command that takes care of guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh sectors.

Digital Insurance announced that it has elevated Jasleen Kohli as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company with effect from April 20.

- These helicopters also feature an array of state of the art sensors, which add up to the maritime prowess of the Indian Coast Guard at sea.
