Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launches country’s first Green Steel Brand
Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched India’s first Green Steel Brand – KALYANI FeRRESTA in New Delhi.

  • This first-of-its-kind steel has been manufactured by a Pune-based Steel company, Kalyani group by using renewable energy resources, leaving zero carbon footprints in the environment.
  • Mr. Scindia termed the launch as a paradigm shift in the Steel industry. He said, with the green steel manufacturing going on, India is leading the countries which have committed to achieving carbon neutrality.

UAE set to host World’s Largest Trade Minister Meeting in 2024
THE United Arab Emirates (UAE) edged out Cameroon to host the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 2024 ministerial conference, the largest global gathering of trade ministers.

  • The meeting, scheduled in Abu Dhabi for the week of Feb 26, 2024, will come at a critical time for a slowing global economy that is reeling from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an ongoing pandemic, and a simmering trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
  • Cameroon will host the next such meeting, the WTO said.

US: Wildlife officials declare ‘Nevada wildflower’ as endangered species
In the United States, wildlife officials declared a Nevada wildflower endangered at the only place it’s known to exist – on a high-desert ridge where a lithium mine is planned to help meet the growing demand for electric car batteries.

  • The Fish and Wildlife Service has formally listed Tiehm’s buckwheat and its accompanying area of 910 acres for the 6-inch-tall flower with yellow blooms. With an estimated remaining population of only about 16,000 plants, the service concluded that Tiehm’s buckwheat is on the brink of extinction.

Nitin Gadkari launches first-ever ‘Surety Bond Insurance’ for infrastructure projects
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched one of India’s first-ever Surety Bond Insurance product from Bajaj Allianz.

  • Gadkari said India is well on its path to becoming a $5 Trillion economy and insurance will play an important role in this growth. With this new instrument of Surety Bonds, the availability of both liquidity and capacity will be boosted.
  • Surety Bond Insurance will act as a security arrangement for infrastructure projects and will insulate the contractor as well as the principal. The product will cater to the requirements of a diversified group of contractors, many of whom are operating in today’s increasingly volatile environment.

`IDFC FIRST Bank announces ZERO Fee Banking on savings accounts
On the occasion of its foundation day on December 18, IDFC FIRST Bank has announced zero-fee banking on savings accounts.

  • The Bank has waived off fees on 25 commonly-used banking services related to savings accounts such as cash deposit and withdrawal at branches, third-party cash transactions, demand drafts, immediate payment service (IMPS), National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), cheque book, SMS alerts, interest certificates, insufficient balance for ATM transactions, international ATM usage and so on.
  • Even customers maintaining as low as Rs 10,000 as average monthly balance (AMB), as well as the Rs 25,000 AMB savings account variant will enjoy these benefits. This will benefit all customers, and particularly those with lesser financial literacy who find it difficult to compute the fees and charges, the lender said.

Jaipur Pink Panthers beat Puneri Paltan to win second PKL title
The Jaipur Pink Panthers claimed their second Pro Kabaddi League title after beating Puneri Paltan 33-29 in a thrilling final at the NSCI Stadium in Mumbai. With the win, the Pink Panthers become only the second team, after three-time champions Patna Pirates, to win multiple titles.

  • Captain Sunil Kumar starred and led the Pink Panthers with six tackle points, which was the same number of points won by raiders V Ajith and Arjun Deshwal, who was later adjudged the ‘most valuable player’ of the season.

FIFA World Cup: Messi Won Golden Ball of FIFA World Cup 2022
Lionel Messi became the first player to win the Golden Ball (best player of the tournament) twice at a men’s Fifa World Cup after leading Argentina to the title in the final.

  • Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez won the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper of the tournament for keeping three clean sheets as well as helping Argentina win in penalty shootouts against the Netherlands and France.
  • Kylian Mbappe, who ended up on the losing side in a thrilling final, pipped Messi to the Golden Boot award for the top goalscorer after scoring a hattrick in the final. He became the third player to do so in the title clash of a Fifa World Cup after Geoff Hurst in 1966 and Carli Lloyd in 2015.

India’s Smart Cities Mission wins the Platinum Icon in Digital India Awards 2022
The Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs won the Platinum Icon in the Digital India Awards 2022 for their initiative “DataSmart Cities: Empowering Cities through Data” under the ‘Data Sharing and Use for Socio Economic Development’ category.

  • The initiative is a key step in creating a robust data ecosystem that enables evidence-based decision-making in cities.
  • The Digital India Awards (DIA) is a prestigious National competition that seeks to encourage and honour innovative digital solutions by government entities in realising the Digital India vision.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Fifth Scorpène-class submarine Vagir delivered to Indian Navy
The fifth Scorpène submarine, Vagir of Project – 75 Kalvari Class submarines has been delivered to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai. Defence Ministry said, the submarine would shortly be commissioned into the Navy and enhance its capability.

  • Project-75 includes the indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design. These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, France.
