Nagaland officially declared as Lumpy Skin Disease positive State
Nagaland has been officially declared as a Lumpy Skin Disease Positive State. The declaration is made following the detection of the Lumpy skin disease in four districts of the state,  under The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009. 

  • The Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services will enforce all necessary preventive measures with the concerned state department as per the advisory and guidelines issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. 

Ladakh’s Kargil gets first women police station
The first-ever women’s police station has opened in Ladakh’s Kargil to specifically address crimes against women and provide support and resources for women. 

  • The station will operate round the clock to ensure immediate assistance and support for women in need. Additionally, it will act as a resource centre, providing guidance and counselling services for women facing challenging situations.

UAE Reports New MERS-CoV Case; WHO Calls for Vigilance
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of a newly confirmed case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV)

  • The infected individual is a 28-year-old male from Al Ain city, Abu Dhabi, with no known contact with dromedaries, goats, or sheep.The patient was admitted to the hospital on June 8, displaying symptoms ,a nasopharyngeal swab tested positive for MERS-CoV.
  • The virus, primarily transmitted to humans through dromedaries, can cause severe respiratory illness and has globally claimed 936 lives.

Largest ever Australia-U.S. joint military exercise  ‘Talisman Sabre’ gets underway
Australia and the U.S. began two weeks of war games involving more than 30,000 troops and participants from 11 other countries, in a show of force and unity at a time when China has emerged as an increasingly assertive power in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Held every two years, the first Talisman Sabre joint military exercises were conducted in 2005, and this year’s drills will be the largest yet.
  • This year will see Germany participate for the first time, with 210 paratroopers and marines taking part as the European nation bolsters its presence in the Indo-Pacific.Personnel from India, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will also attend as observers.

Dvara KGFS, HDFC Bank in co-lending pact to support micro businesses in rural India
Dvara KGFS, a Chennai-based NBFC, has entered into a co-lending partnership with HDFC Bank to provide capital to micro business units operating primarily in the unorganised sector.

  • The lender said the collaboration with HDFC Bank will help the company to realise its ambition of extending credit to micro businesses across the 10 States it serves.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

IMF raises India’s growth forecast to 6.1% for current fiscal
International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised India’s growth forecast, projecting a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 6.1 per cent in the current fiscal.

  • The IMF in its latest World Economic Outlook report, which was released said, the upward revision of 0.2 percentage points is reflective of the momentum from stronger-than-expected growth in the fourth quarter of 2022 as a result of stronger domestic investment.
  • The IMF has kept the GDP growth projection for the fiscal year 2024-2025 unchanged at 6.3 per cent.

Emerging Asia Cup final 2023: Pakistan beat India by 128 runs
Tayyab Tahir’s exceptional hundred garnished Pakistan A’s march to a commanding 128-run win over India A, for a second consecutive Emerging Teams Asia Cup title. 

  • Once Pakistan posted a mammoth 352 for eight courtesy Tahir’s 108 off 71 balls (12x4s, 4x6s), the result was in no real doubt. India made a fist of it, but ended up at 224 all out in 40 overs to suffer their first defeat in this tournament.

ICC suspends Harmanpreet Kaur in strict action after India captain smashes stumps, criticises umpire publicly
Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women’s cricket captain, has been suspended for the next two international matches due to two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct, the ICC said. 

  • Kaur was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, relating to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. 
  • The incidents occurred during the India vs Bangladesh third women’s One-Day-International in Dhaka. The encounter was part of the ICC Women’s Championship series.


APPOINTMENTS

UAE Minister for Foreign Trade Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi elected as chair of WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference
UAE Minister for Foreign Trade Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi has been elected as the chair of the World Trade Organisation’s 13th Ministerial Conference that will be held in Abu Dhabi in February 2024. 

  • The announcement was made during the WTO General Council in Geneva, where Dr Al Zeyoudi met with the WTO director general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
  • The conference will be attended by representatives from the 164 countries and customs blocs that make up the WTO. It will review the performance of the trading system, make decisions on future work and set up the road map for the next conference. 

China names Pan Gongsheng to lead central bank, succeeding Yi Gang
Pan Gongsheng was named China’s central bank governor in the widely anticipated final major appointment of the ruling Communist Party’s once-a-decade change of power. 

  • Pan, a deputy central bank governor and veteran of China’s state-owned banking industry, succeeds Yi Gang, an American-trained economist who held the post for five years. The endorsement of Pan’s promotion by the ceremonial legislature, the National People’s Congress, follows other Cabinet-level appointments announced in March.
