AYUSH grows from US$ 3 Billion to US$ 18 Billion
Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has informed that under the guidance and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ayush market has reached 18 billion US dollar mark from meager 3 billion US dollar. He was addressing the gathering at the 6th Confederation of Indian Industry, CII, Ayush Conclave 2022 in New Delhi.

  • The Ministry of AYUSH, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has established a number of standards for the AYUSH system.These benchmarks will be beneficial for all the stakeholders, especially the industry related to AYUSH systems.
  • The 6th CII Ayush Conclave 2022 was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with the support of the Ministry of Ayush in New Delhi.Key stakeholders of the AYUSH system discussed topics such as regulatory roadmap, research and development in the AYUSH sector, branding, promotion and marketing of AYUSH products.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

European Space Agency names first disabled astronaut
The European Space Agency named the first ever “parastronaut” in a major step towards allowing people with physical disabilities to work and live in space.

  • The 22-nation agency said it had selected former British Paralympic sprinter John McFall as part of a new generation of 17 recruits picked for astronaut training.
  • He will take part in a feasibility study designed to allow ESA to assess the conditions needed for people with disabilities to take part in future missions.


BANKING & FINANCE

GSTN now part of AA network to facilitate cash flow lending to MSMEs: RBI
In a major development, the Goods and Services Tax network (GSTN) has been included to the account aggregator (AA) network as a financial information provider (FIP) to facilitate cash flow lending to the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said.

  • Department of revenue shall be the regulator of GSTN for this specific purpose and GST returns, viz. Form GSTR-1 and Form GSTR-3B, shall be the financial information.
  • The AA network had been in discussion with the GSTN network for their onboarding for a long time as this would give financial institutions access to data regarding small businesses, which would help them to extend loans to such businesses.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India’s current account deficit pegged at 3-3.2% of GDP in FY23
With rising domestic economic activity and an uptick in oil import bills, India’s current account deficit is expected to be 3-3.2 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) for FY23, according to Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran. But he stressed the country’s external sector remains robust.

  • India’s current account balance recorded a deficit of 1.2 per cent of GDP in 2021-22, against a surplus of 0.9 per cent in 2020-21.
  • The Reserve Bank of India expects CAD to have widened modestly in the first half (April-September 2022) but shrink in the second half (October 2022-March 2023). Overall, CAD is expected to be under 3 per cent of GDP for FY23.

Qatar signed world’s ‘longest’ gas supply deal with China
Qatar announced its first major deal to send liquefied natural gas to Germany as Europe scrambles to find alternatives to Russian energy sources.

  • Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad Sherida al-Kaabi said up to two million tons of gas a year would be sent for at least 15 years from 2026, and that state-run QatarEnergy was discussing other possible deals for Europe’s biggest economy.
  • The gas will be bought through U.S. firm ConocoPhillips, a long-term partner with QatarEnergy, and sent to a new terminal that Germany is hurrying to finish at Brunsbuttel.

Telangana’s Nishanth Bhukya and Odisha’s Tanvi Patri win National U-13 badminton titles
Telangana’s Nishanth Bhukya and Odisha’s Tanvi Patri emerged champions in the boys and girls singles respectively at the 34th Under-13 National Badminton Championships, notching contrasting wins at the UP Badminton Academy, Lucknow.

  • Fourth seeded Bhukya came from behind to beat Andhra Pradesh’s Akhil Reddy Boba 19-21, 21-12, 22-20 in 44 minutes whereas Patri took just 22 minutes to brush aside local challenger and 15th seeded Divyanshi Gautam 21-7, 21-10.


APPOINTMENTS

Lt Gen Asim Munir appointed as new Pakistan Army chief
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chose Lt Gen Asim Munir as the new Army chief to replace incumbent General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

  • Bajwa, 61, is scheduled to retire on November 29 after a three-year extension. He has ruled out seeking another extension. The new chief will take over from outgoing General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will retire later this month after a six-year term.

Cambridge Dictionary names ‘homer’ Word of the Year 2022
The Cambridge Dictionary has revealed its word of the year for 2022 as “homer”, saying that it was inspired by the global word game sensation, Wordle.

  • The word ”homer” was searched for nearly 75,000 times during the first week of May 2022, when it was an answer in the word game Wordle.
  • In the context of the game, ”homer” doesn’t refer to the Greek poet and author, or a character from Simpson, but refers to an informal American English word for a ‘home run’ in baseball.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Stealth-guided missile destroyer Mormugao delivered to Indian Navy
The second ship of Project 15B stealth guided missile destroyer being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), was delivered to the Indian Navy. The contract for four ships of Project 15B was signed on January 28, 2011.

  • This Project is a follow-on of the Kolkata class (Project 15A) destroyers commissioned in the last decade and the lead ship of the Project – INS Visakhapatnam has already been commissioned into the Indian Navy on Nov 21, 2021.
  • Designed by the Warship Design Bureau, the Indian Navy’s in-house organization, and built by M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai, the four ships of the project are christened after major cities from all four corners of the country, viz. Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal and Surat.


ENVIRONMENT 

Madurai district gets TN’s first biodiversity heritage site
The Tamil Nadu Government, issued a notification declaring Arittapatti and Meenakshipuram villages in Madurai district the first biodiversity heritage site in the State.

  • The site comprising 139.63 hectares in Arittapatti village (Melur block) and 53.8 hectares in Meenakshipuram village (Madurai East taluk) will be known as the Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage site, said a notification.
  • Arittapatti village, known for its ecological and historical significance, houses around 250 species of birds including three important raptors – birds of prey, namely the Laggar Falcon, the Shaheen Falcon and Bonelli’s Eagle.
