PM Narendra Modi inaugurates new Parliament building
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s new parliament building, a modern complex which is part of his Hindu nationalist government’s grand plan to give a makeover to the British colonial-era architecture in the nation’s capital.

  • The inauguration, and the ongoing revamp of the heart of New Delhi based on Indian culture, traditions, and symbols, comes a year before parliamentary elections in which Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will pitch its strong Hindu nationalist credentials, and its performance in office over the last decade, to seek a third term.
  • The new parliament complex is the centrepiece of a $2.4 billion project aimed at eclipsing the significance of colonial-era buildings in the capital’s centre, paving the way for modern buildings with a distinct Indian identity.

Army conducts exercise Sudarshan Shakti along Western border
The Sapta Shakti Command of the Indian Army recently conducted the highly anticipated exercise ‘Sudarshan Shakti 2023’ along the western borders in Rajasthan and Punjab.

  • The exercise aimed to transform the forces into a modern, lean, and agile fighting combination capable of leveraging new-age technologies.


PhonePe becomes first payment app to link two lakh Rupay credit cards to UPI
Leading fintech company PhonePe announced that the company has become the first digital payments app to successfully enable the linkage of two lakh RuPay credit cards to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It has also processed a Total Payment Value (TPV) of Rs 150 crore via RuPay Credit on UPI.

  • The company said it aims to offer a comprehensive suite of solutions for RuPay Credit on UPI in partnership with NPCI to popularise its usage among the customers and merchants alike.
  • The company has already enabled the acceptance of RuPay credit cards on UPI across 12 million merchant outlets in the country, achieving the highest merchant penetration in the ecosystem.


Nepal approves second Hydropower Project to be developed by India
Nepal, decided to allow India’s Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited to develop a second hydropower project in the country.

  • At present SJVN is developing a 900-MW Arun -III hydroelectric project, a run-of-river located on the Arun River in Eastern Nepal, scheduled to be completed in 2024.
  • This comes ahead of Prachanda’s four-day visit to India starting 31 May where discussion is likely to be about energy cooperation and the prospect of exporting power to Bangladesh through India.


Max Verstappen wins Monaco Grand Prix 2023
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, leading all 78 laps from pole position. The victory was Verstappen’s fourth of the season and extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 39 points.

  • In a race livened up by a downpour after a processional 51 laps in dry conditions, Spaniard Fernando Alonso finished second for Aston Martin but a massive 27.9 seconds behind at the chequered flag.

Ambati Rayudu announces retirement ahead of CSK vs GT IPL 2023 final
Chennai Super Kings batter Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League. The 37-year-old confirmed that the IPL 2023 Final between CSK and defending champions Gujarat Titans would be his last game.

  • Rayudu started his IPL career in 2010 with Mumbai Indians, and won his first title in 2013. He won two more titles in 2015 and 2017 before moving to CSK in 2018, where he won the title in his debut season with the franchise. The 37-year-old went on to win another title with CSK in 2021.
  • Rayudu has scored 4,329 runs in 203 matches in the IPL, at an average of 28.29, while striking at 127.29. He has hit 22 fifties and a solitary century in his glittering IPL career.

Magnus Carlsen wins 2023 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland
Five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen won the 2023 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland, the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT), at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

  • The Norwegian Grandmaster, the World No.1, finished with a score of 24/36, taking home the $40,000 1st place prize.
  • Placed second was local favourite and defending champion Jan-Krzyzstof Duda, who led until the final day and ended just a point behind with 23/36, after nearly winning a final game against Carlsen that would have forced a playoff.


Praveen Kumar Srivastava sworn in as Central Vigilance Commissioner
Praveen Kumar Srivastava was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

  • Mr. Srivastava is a 1988-batch retired Indian Administrative Service officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.


3 Indian peacekeepers honoured posthumously with top UN medal
Three Indian peacekeepers, who lost their lives serving under the UN flag last year, are among the 103 military, police, and civilian peacekeepers who will be honoured posthumously with a prestigious medal for their service and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

  • The three Indians include Border Security Force personnel Head Constables Shishupal Singh and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi, who served with the Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Shaber Taher Ali, employed in a civilian capacity with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq.
  • They will be honoured with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal at a solemn ceremony held at the UN headquarters.


ISRO successfully launches its next-generation navigational satellite – NVS-1 from Sriharikota
ISRO’s GSLV f 12 rocket with NVS – 01 satellite was successfully launched from Sriharikota. The rocket lifted off from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre and injected NVS -01 satellite in its geosynchronous orbit.

  • The satellite weighing 2232 kilograms is the first of the second-generation satellites envisaged for the Navigation with Indian Constellation series.
  • The datas from the satellite will be used for individual and strategic purposes.
