Global aviation body ICAO signs MoU with International Solar Alliance
The International Civil Aviation Orga nization (ICAO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to check the growth of CO2 emissions in the sector, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in statement.

  • The conclusion of MoU between ISA and ICAO in the presence of ministers from India and France carries forward the legacy of the bold initiative laid down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President of France Francois Hollande in 2015 at COP 21 in Paris, statement said.

Maharashtra Cabinet to name Chipi airport after socialist leader Barrister Nath Pai
The Maharashtra Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave the nod to name the Chipi airport in Sindhudurg district after a prominent socialist leader, freedom fighter and former MP Barrister Nath Pai.

  • The Chip Airport was formally inaugurated on March 5, 2019. Alliance Air, a former Air India subsidiary, is the only airline operating flights from Mumbai. Commercial flights started at the airport from October 9, 2021.


Bank of Baroda rolls out Khushiyon ka Tyohaar as festive season begins
As the festive season begins, Bank of Baroda (Bank), one of India’s leading public sector banks, announced the launch of Khushiyon ka Tyohaar – its annual festive campaign with a range of offers for customers.

  • With attractive interest rates on home loans and car loans, in addition to waiver/ discount on processing charges and other benefits, this is the opportune time for customers to avail a loan to buy their dream home or car or avail a personal loan.
  • Bank of Baroda Home Loans are available at a competitive interest rate beginning at 7.95% p.a. with no processing charges.
  • Bank of Baroda Car Loans are being offered at a special rate starting from 7.95% p.a. – a 25 basis points concession. In addition, under Khushiyon ka Tyohaar, customers will also receive a number of other benefits such as no pre-payment/ part payment charges, concessional processing charges and a longer repayment tenure of seven years.

Mastercard to launch ‘carbon calculator’ for Indian consumers
Global payments and technology company Mastercard is in talks with Indian banks to roll out its Carbon Calculator feature, which offers consumers an estimated carbon footprint for each of their purchases.

  • Carbon Calculator is a service that we provide to banks. The personalised carbon footprint tracker can tell consumers the cumulative effect of carbon footprint across a variety of spending categories in a month.

Uco, Yes Bank tie up with Russian banks for payments
Yes Bank and UCO Bank have formed a partnership with two Russian banks.

  • Through this deal, both of these institutions will get India closer to conducting business with Russia. UCO Bank has partnered with Gazprom Bank, while Yes Bank has also formed an arrangement with Russia’s Petersburg Social Commercial Bank (PSCB).
  • The deal between Uco Bank and Gazprom Bank comes as the Reserve Bank of India implements a system to facilitate international payments through special Vostro accounts. In the absence of such standard procedures, overseas payments were made in Euros or other foreign currencies. These primarily occur through Gulf nations, whose exports from India have been harmed.


World Bank cuts 2022 East Asia growth outlook
Economic growth in East Asia and the Pacific will weaken sharply in 2022 due to China’s slowdown, but the pace of expansion will pick up next year, the World Bank said.

  • The Washington-based lender said in a report it expected 2022 growth in the East Asia and Pacific region, which includes China, to slow to 3.2%, down from its 5.0% forecast in April, and the previous year’s growth of 7.2%.
  • China, which constitutes 86% of the 23-country region’s economic output, was projected to grow 2.8% this year, a significant deceleration from the bank’s previous forecast of 5.0%. In 2021, China’s economy expanded 8.1%, its best growth in a decade.


Team World beat Team Europe to win Laver Cup 2022
Team World, stunned Team Europe to win the Laver Cup for the first time.

  • Frances Tiafoe powered Team World to the title with a 1-6, 7-6(11), 10-8 win.John McEnroe’s side won with a total margin of 13-8.
  • Four-time champions, Team Europe, entered the final day of three-day event with an 8-4 lead.

Julius Baer Cup: World No.1 Magnus Carlsen beats Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in final
Teenaged Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi went down against world no.1 Magnus Carlsen in the final of the Julius Baer Generation Cup online rapid chess tournament, losing the second match 0-2.

  • Having won the first match, the Norwegian had the advantage and he won the first two games of the second match to close out the finale early.


Lt General Anil Chauhan appointed new Chief of Defence Staff
The government appointed Lt-General Anil Chauhan, a known China expert who retired as the Eastern Army Command chief in May last year, as the country’s next chief of defence staff (CDS).

  • Lt-Gen Chauhan (61), currently the military advisor to national security advisor Ajit Doval and the National Security Council Secretariat, will now have to spearhead the entire process to build an integrated war-fighting machinery within budgetary constraints through the creation of theatre commands and other structures.


Lata Mangeshkar award conferred upon Kumar Sanu, Shailendra Singh and Anand-Milind
Noted playback singers Kumar Sanu and Shailendra Singh and music-composer duo Anand-Milind were conferred with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award on the birth anniversary of the late singing legend at her birthplace in Indore.

  • State Culture Minister Usha Thakur conferred Singh, Anand-Milind and Sanu with the award for the year 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively.
  • Instituted in 1984, the National Lata Mangeshkar Award is given to promote excellence in the area of light music annually by the Madhya Pradesh government’s culture department. It carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation, officials said.
