India, Vietnam hold 3rd Maritime Security Dialogue in New Delhi
The 3rd India-Vietnam Maritime Security Dialogue was held in New Delhi. Senior officials from both sides and Services concerned with maritime affairs participated in the Dialogue.

  • The two sides discussed ways to sustain a secure maritime environment conducive for inclusive growth. They also reviewed maritime cooperation initiatives and avenues of reinforcing international and regional mechanisms for comprehensive maritime security.

Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express train collides with goods train in Odisha
In one of the deadliest railway accidents in India, three trains collided one after another in a horrific sequence in Odisha’s Balasore district, leaving at least 280 people dead and around 900 injured.

  • Two passenger trains ” Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express ” and a goods train were involved in an accident that was triggered by a derailment.
  • The horrific accident happened when the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which was heading towards Chennai, derailed 300 metres from Bahanaga Bazar station. It collided with a goods train on the adjacent track, causing the rear carriage of the Coromandel Express to veer off onto the third track.

Integrated Command and Control Centre set up in Srinagar under Smart City Mission
A state-of-the-art Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) has been set up on the outskirts of Srinagar city under the Smart City Mission.

  • The Centre will act as the “brain and nerve” for all Smart City IT-related interventions. It will be responsible for GIS mapping and will have a digital address for all the properties in the City.
  • The Centre is also tasked to lay a 175 KM long fibre net for uninterrupted services to the locals.

Assam University to collaborate academic research, studies with Bangladesh Universities
Central University of Assam located at Silchar will be collaborating with four Universities of Bangladesh in academic research and studies.

  • Vice Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant said Assam University is taking these steps to implement the New Education Policy and Act East Policy of the Government of India.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

UAE wins Presidency of World Meteorological Organization
A meteorologist of  United Arab Emirates (UAE) Dr Abdulla Al Mandous has been elected as the new President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for a four-year term from 2023 to 2027.

  • Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous emerged as the official candidate of the UAE and secured  95 votes out of the representatives from WMO’s 193 member states and territories. The election took place during the 19th session of the World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19) held in Geneva, Switzerland from 22nd  May to 2nd June.
  • He will succeed Prof Gerhard Adrian from the German Meteorological Service, who served as WMO President since June 2019.

Indian Navy and RSNF Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Joint Naval Exercise and Cadet Training
Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), interacted with cadets of the King Fahd Naval Academy, Saudi Arabia, who are undergoing sea training at the Southern Naval Command (SNC) in Kochi.

  • The 55 cadets of the Royal Saudi Naval Force (RSNF) along with five Directing Staff are attached with the First Training Squadron ships, INS Tir and INS Sujata, as part of their afloat training with the Indian Navy.The CNS was apprised of the ongoing harbour and afloat training activities, including familiarization sea sorties.
  • As part of the training curriculum, simulator training was undertaken for the cadets prior to embarking for the sea training phase. The cadets have completed 10 days at sea aboard the Indian Naval Ships.

NATO launches Arctic exercises, vowing to protect newest member Finland
NATO countries are in the middle of Arctic military manoeuvres, vowing to defend their newest member, Finland, which is hosting its first joint NATO exercise since becoming the 31st member of the Western alliance in April.

  • The addition of Finland doubles the length of the border NATO shares with Russia, which launched a large-scale invasion of another neighbour, Ukraine, in February last year.
  • Nearly 1,000 allied forces from the United States, Britain and Norway, and also from neighbouring Sweden, joined some 6,500 Finnish troops and some 1,000 vehicles for the Northern Forest exercise, Finland’s biggest modern-time land force drill above the Arctic Circle.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Dubai emerges as India’s favourite destination for FDI
Dubai, a favourite destination among tourists and shopping aficionados, is becoming the top choice among Indian investors. Dubai ranks No. 1 as the Destination City for foreign direct investment (FDI) from India in calendar year 2022.

  • According to the Dubai FDI Monitor, India ranked among the Top 5 source countries for announced FDI projects and estimated FDI capital in calendar year 2022. India accounted for 12 percent of announced FDI projects in Dubai in 2022. Only the US (20 percent) and UK (13 percent) are ahead of India.
  • Apart from maintaining its top rank as the destination city for FDI from India, Dubai retained its No. 1 spot globally for attracting greenfield FDI projects in 2022. Retaining its top spot for a second successive year, Dubai achieved 89.5 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth in total announced FDI projects in 2022, while total FDI capital surged 80.3 percent over the same period.

Argentina’s Celeste Saulo becomes first woman leader of World Meteorological Organization
Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first female Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

  • Saulo won a landslide vote at the UN Climate and weather agency’s Congress in Geneva. Saulo has served as the director of Argentina’s National Meteorological Service since 2014.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Govt launches unified registration portal for biogas projects
The Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched the Unified Registration Portal for GOBARdhan which will act as a one stop repository to assess investment and participation in Biogas/CBG sector at pan India level and more importantly streamline the process of setting up CBG/Biogas plants in India.

  • Any government, cooperative or private entity operating or intending to setup a Biogas/CBG/Bio CNG plant in India can obtain a registration number by enrolling in this unified registration portal launched.
  • The registration number will enable availing of multitude of benefits and support from the Ministries & Departments of Government of India. States have been advised to get their CBG/Biogas plant operators registered on the portal on priority to avail existing and upcoming support from the Union Government.
