Germany prepares to host “Air Defender 2023” NATO’s biggest ever air exercise
Germany is preparing to host the biggest air deployment exercise in NATO’s history, a show of force intended to impress allies and potential adversaries such as Russia, German and American officials said.

  • The Air Defender 23 exercise starting next week will see 10,000 participants and 250 aircraft from 25 nations respond to a simulated attack on a NATO member country. The United States alone is sending 2,000 U.S. Air National Guard personnel and about 100 aircraft to take part in the training maneuvers.

India and US to establish Monitoring Group to Boost High-Tech Trade and Tech Partnership
India and the United States have agreed to set up a monitoring group to review progress in deepening cooperation in the bilateral high-tech trade and technology partnership.

  • The two sides reviewed ongoing cooperation in multilateral export control regimes and agreed to share best practices, per a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • The decision was taken at the inaugural meeting of India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue (IUSSTD) in Washington D.C led by Foreign Secretary, Vinay Mohan Kwatra and  co-led by Alan Estevez, Under Secretary for Industry and Security in the US Department of Commerce and Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in the US Department of State.

5 new countries elected as non-permanent members of the UNSC
Five countries have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council following a vote in the General Assembly. Algeria, Guyana, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia will join the premier body for maintaining international peace and security, starting in January, serving for a two-year period.

  • Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone and South Korea ran unopposed for a spot on the 15-member body, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security. In the only competitive race, Slovenia beat out Belarus. The five elected nations will replace Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India emerged as the World’s 2nd largest producer of crude steel
Union Minister of Steel and Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M. Scindia addressed a press conference at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, New Delhi on the theme 9-years of Government’s “Seva, Sushasan and Gareeb kalyan” focusing on the Indian Steel sector.

  • In his address, the minister stressed on the role that the Steel sector can play in ensuring India’s pragati (growth) and vikas (development). India currently ranks as the World’s 2nd Largest Producer of Crude Steel, surpassing Japan in 2018”, said the minister as he spoke about remarkable growth recorded by Indian steel industry.
  • The minister conveyed that India now stands as a net exporter of steel witnessing an export of 6.72 MT of finished steel against the import of 6.02 MT in 2022-23. The minister also informed the media that India has come a long way from the time when it was a net importer of steel in 2014-15 with 9.32 MT imports Vis-à-vis the export of 5.59 MT.


ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS

LIC raises stake in Tech Mahindra to 8.88% through Open Market Transactions
LIC announced that it has acquired additional equity shares in Tech Mahindra through open market purchases, raising its stake from 6.69 crore to 8.65 crore equity shares. 

  • The insurance behemoth’s shareholding in the company rose from 6.869 percent to 8.884 percent.
  • There is an increase of 2.01 percent in holding during the period from November 21, 2022, to June 6, 2023, it added. The average buying price for these shares stood at Rs 1,050.77 per share.


SPORTS

Sunil Kumar wins decathlon gold at Asian U20 Athletics Championship
India’s Sunil Kumar scored 7003 points and clinched gold in men’s decathlon at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Yecheon, South Korea.

  • Apart from Sunil’s heroics, Pooja clinched women’s high jump silver after finishing with a 1.82m jump while Bushra Khan, secured silver in women’s 3000m race. In the women’s 4x100m relay, India secured bronze with a time of 45.36s.
  • Siddharth Choudhary bagged gold medal in the men’s Shot Put with a throw of 19.52m while Shivam Lohakare won silver in Javelin throw with a throw of 72.34m. Sharuk Khan clocked 8:51.74 in men’s 3000m steeplechase to add another silver to India’s medal tally.
  • India is placed third in the overall rankings with 12 medals – Three each of gold, silver and bronze. Japan tops the chart with 10 golds and 17 medals overall while China is placed second with 14 medals.

Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar Anand takes over as Air Officer-in-Charge Administration
Air Marshal Rajesh Kumar Anand, Vishisht Seva Medal took over as Air    Officer-in-Charge Administration (AOA) on 01 Jun 2023.

  • An alumnus of National Defence Academy, the Air Marshal was commissioned in Administrative Branch of the Indian Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller on 13 Jun 1987.  He has undergone the Higher Air Command Course from College of Air Warfare and Area Control Course from the Singapore Aviation Academy.
  • In a career spanning over 36 years, the Air Marshal has held various field and staff appointments.  Prior to his present appointment, he was Director General (Administration) at Air Headquarters, New Delhi.

Muthamizh Selvi, first Tamil Nadu woman to scale Mt Everest
Tamil Nadu Minister for Sports Development and Youth Welfare Udhayanidhi Stalin felicitated N Muthamizh Selvi, the first woman from Tamil Nadu to scale Mount Everest.

  • The 34-year-old woman from Johilpatti, Virudhunagar, reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 23, after 56 days of strenuous journey.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

India successfully Flight-Tests New-Generation Ballistic Missile ‘Agni Prime’
New Generation Ballistic Missile ‘Agni Prime’ was successfully flight-tested by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. During the flight test, all objectives were successfully demonstrated.

  • This was the first pre-induction night launch conducted by the users after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system. Range Instrumentation like Radar, Telemetry and Electro Optical Tracking Systems were deployed at different locations, including two down-range ships, at the terminal point to capture flight data covering the entire trajectory of the vehicle.


OBITUARIES

Award-winning DD anchor Gitanjali Aiyar passes away
Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India’s first English female news presenters on Doordarshan, died. She was in hermid 70s.

  • Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971. She won the award for best anchor four times. She also won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989.
