NTPC Kanti launched Girl Empowerment Mission GEM 2023
NTPC Kanti has launched the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM)-2023, a four-week residential workshop program for 40 underprivileged rural girls from Kanti block as part of its CSR initiative.

  • This is the first time NTPC Kanti is organising the GEM program. Eight students have been selected from five schools in Kanti Block.
  • During their stay, the participants will receive academic training and development skill sets such as soft skills, life skill training, sports, meditation, yoga, self-defence, computer application, communication skills, and other extra-curricular activities.

UP Government launched Nand Baba Milk Mission scheme
Uttar Pradesh government has launched Nand Baba Milk Mission Scheme at the cost of Rs 1000 crore to increase milk production on the one hand and to give milk producers fair prices for their produce in villages itself.

  • The Nand Baba Milk Mission scheme, has been implemented to provide milk producers the facility of selling their milk at a reasonable price in villages through dairy co-operative societies.

Dr. Mandaviya unveils 5th State Food Safety Index on World Food Safety Day
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, unveiled the 5th State Food Safety Index (SFSI), which evaluates the performance of states and union territories across six different aspects of food safety.

  • The release of this index coincided with an interactive session that was organized by The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya felicitated the winners based on their rankings for the year 2022-23. Among the larger states, Kerala secured the top ranking, followed by Punjab and Tamil Nadu Among the smaller states, Goa emerged as the leader, followed Manipur and Sikkim Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Chandigarh secured the first, second, and third ranks respectively among the union territories.

Telangana ranks top on overall environmental performance: CSE Report
On the occasion of World Environment Day(June 5), non-profit Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has released its annual compendium of data in which Telangana was ranked in the top in terms of overall environmental performance.

  • CSE released its annual compendium of data ‘State of India’s Environment 2023: In Figures’. The report offers a wealth of statistics on the state of climate and extreme weather, health, food and nutrition, migration and displacement, agriculture, energy, waste, water and biodiversity.
  • As per the report, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat emerge at the top. The key highlights of this year’s report is ranking of Indian states based on four parametres: environment, agriculture, public health and infrastructure.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI’s Annual Report 20­22-2023 announced
The Reserve Bank said that India’s growth momentum is likely to continue in 2023-24 even as it made a case for pushing structural reforms to deal with the geopolitical developments and also to achieve sustained growth in the medium-term.

  • The Reserve Bank’s annual report flagged slowing global growth, protracted geopolitical tensions and a possible upsurge in financial market volatility as possible downside risks to growth.
  • Amidst strong global headwinds, the Indian economy is expected to have recorded a growth of 7.0% in real GDP in 2022-23. 
  • The RBI also said the conduct of monetary policy will continue to be guided by the objective of achieving the medium-term target for Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation of 4% within a band of +/- 2 per cent, while supporting growth.
  • The value of e-Rupee-Wholesale and e-Rupee-Retail in circulation stood at ₹10.69 crore and ₹5.70 crore, respectively, as on March 31, 2023.
  • In value terms, the share of ₹500 and ₹2,000 banknotes together accounted for 87.9% of the total value of banknotes in circulation as on March 31, 2023, as compared to 87.1% a year a. go
  • The Reserve Bank has announced withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes, and holders of the highest value currency have been given time till September 30 to exchange or deposit them.
  • In volume terms, ₹500 denomination constituted the highest share at 37.9%, followed by ₹10 denomination banknotes which constituted 19.2% of the total banknotes in circulation as on March 31, 2023.

Federal Bank launches ‘I am Adyar, Adyar is me’ campaign in Chennai
The campaign ‘I am Adyar, Adyar is me’ was launched by the Federal Bank in Chennai to honour and celebrate the local community of Adyar.

  • The Adyar branch of Federal Bank has been converted into a living museum for the campaign.Vibrant paintings depicting the vibrant spirit of Adyar now adorn the walls of the branch.
  • The campaign features a special exhibition showcasing 40 compelling stories of the individuals who made Adyar special.

FarmersFZ’ chosen by UN for food startup ‘Accelerator Programme’
A startup located in Kerala, known as Farmers Fresh Zone (FarmersFZ), has been selected for the United Nations’ ‘Accelerator Programme’ hosted by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), making the nation proud.

  • FarmersFZ has figured in the list of 12 agri-food startups around the world for the UN body to develop business.
  • The Kochi-based multichannel marketplace platform, which functions under the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), is one among India’s two startups to qualify for the ‘Accelerator Programme’. Its ultimate aim is to attain the UN Sustainable Development Goals.


APPOINTMENTS

PESB picks Sanjay Swarup to be the next CMD of CONCOR
The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has picked Sanjay Swarup for the role of Chairman and Managing Director of Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR).

  • Swarup is currently Director (International Marketing and Operations) at India’s biggest rail hauler of containers.

Author Shantanu Gupta launches his new graphic novel ‘Ajay to Yogi Adityanath
Noted Author, Shantanu Gupta, who has written two bestseller titles on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, launched his new graphic novel – “Ajay to Yogi Adityanath” for the young readers. The graphic novel was launched in 51+ schools of Uttar Pradesh on the occasion of the 51st birthday of Yogi Adityanath.

  • More than 5000 children from different districts of Uttar Pradesh participated in the book release.The simultaneous launch at multiple locations with multiple participants has earned this event a place in the Asia Book of Records.


OBITUARIES

Kerala’s first ‘Ashoka Chakra’ winner Havildar Alby D’Cruz passes away
Soldier Alby D’Cruz (87), the first recipient of the Ashoka Chakra from Kerala, passed away in small fortune. He was resting due to old age ailments.

  • He was working in Assam Rifles in the communication department. The state honored him with the Ashoka Chakra for his extraordinary bravery during the civil war with the Naga rebels who demanded an independent Nagaland in 1960.
  • Albi took part in the fighting with the Naga insurgents while serving in Assam’s border guard area. On April 30, 1962, the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad presented the Ashoka Chakra to Albi who was Lance Naik. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also congratulated him on the occasion. After retiring from the army as a havildar in 1975, Albi worked as a clerk in a telecommunications equipment store in Dubai.
