NATIONAL NEWS

India’s first underground power transformer installed in Bengaluru
Energy Minister KJ George inaugurated the country’s first underground transformer center in the state capital Bengaluru. It has been set up at 15th Avenue, Malleswaram in collaboration with BESCOM and BBMP at a cost of Rs 1.98 crore.

  • This is a transformer of 500 KVA capacity. Only Western countries have power transformer underground stations. Governments there have built these centers keeping in mind the convenience and safety of the public.
  • For the safety and convenience of the people, a room is constructed below the earth, in which a 30 mm cement block is constructed and electrical transformers are installed on it. Presently, the converter is installed at a depth of 10 feet from the top of the road in this center which is established in Malleswaram.

India to open embassy in Timor-Leste
At the ASEAN-India summit, the prime minister Narendra Modi announced the decision to establish an Indian Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

  • Timor Leste joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2022 as an Observer, before becoming its full member.

Jharkhand Cabinet approves 1k pension for transgender community, inclusion in backward classes category
The Jharkhand cabinet led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren approved the inclusion of the transgender community in the state’s universal pension scheme.

  • Transgender persons will now be eligible to receive monthly financial assistance of Rs 1000 under the ‘Chief Minister’s State Social Security Pension Scheme’.
  • Eligibility for this scheme is determined on the basis of age, persons of 18 years and above who have voter ID cards are eligible.
  • Apart from the pension scheme, the Jharkhand cabinet also approved the inclusion of transgender persons in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

African Union becomes permanent member of G20 under India’s presidency
During the inaugural session of the two-day G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the African Union (AU) had been granted permanent membership in the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) worldwide.

  • This announcement marked the AU’s accession as a new member of this prominent global organization, consisting of 55 nations.

Phase II of India-France bilateral exercise ‘Varuna 2023’ conducted in Arabian Sea
Phase II of the 21st edition of Varuna (Varuna-23) bilateral exercise between Indian and French Navy was conducted in the Arabian Sea. 

  • The exercise witnessed participation of guided missile frigates, tanker, Maritime Patrol Aircraft and integral helicopters from the two sides. The exercise was conducted over three days and witnessed joint operations, underway replenishment and various tactical maneuvers.

G20 summit witnesses announcement of India-Middle East-Europe corridor project
The G20 summit witnessed the announcement of an ambitious project which will connect India to Europe via Middle East. The first of its kind projects named the India-Middle East-Europe connectivity corridor along with the Trans-African corridor were announced on under the forum of Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment with the presence of top world leaders.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that with this corridor India will be a medium for economic integration between West Asia and Europe.
  • A corridor that will not only become a bridge between civilizations but also increase India’s global influence. The India-Middle East-Europe connectivity corridor would link Railways and port facilities across the Middle East including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel. The project has the potential to speed up the trade between India and Europe.

Goa Governor launches ‘Mashaal’ for 37th National Games
Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai launched ‘Mashaal’ for 37th National Games at a program held in Durbar Hall Raj Bhavan, Donapaula.The 37th National Games will be held in Goa from October 25 to November 9.

  • The Governor also released anthem (theme song) of national games for which actor Amitabh Bachchan has given his voice.The anthem featured the traditional Goan instrument, the Ghumat, and featured a collaboration between Goan singers and other talented artists.

Radhika Iyengar wrote the book “Fire on the Ganges: Life among the Dead in Banaras”, published by HarperCollins.

  • The book highlights the city of Banaras, also known as Varanasi, in India, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between death and the afterlife.
  • “Fire on the Ganges” represents the first attempt to document the daily experiences of Doms in Banaras.

Book on UP CM Yogi Adityanath creates history with 67 launches
The graphic novel “Ajay to Yogi Adityanath,” based on the life of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has made history with its launch at 67 different locations, including a recent launch event in Bengaluru.

  • The novel is the creation of renowned author Shantanu Gupta, known for his two previous bestsellers. This latest graphic novel, which delves into the life of Yogi Adityanath, has been successfully launched in 8 states: Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Assam.
  • Notably, the novel has earned a prestigious place in the Asia Book of Records for achieving the highest number of launches. This book was Written by Shantanu Gupta.
