Quantitative Aptitude: Data Interpretation Questions – Set 71

Direction (1-5): Study the following table and answer the questions that follow:

  1. What is the number of employees in Finance Department of offices A and D?
    A) 63
    B) 61
    C) 52
    D) 59
    E) 55
    View Answer
    Option E
    Solution
    :
    In A = 18 * 3/2 = 27
    In D = 32 * 7/8 = 28
    Required total = 27+28 = 55
  2. What is the number of employees in Other Departments of offices D and E?
    A) 476

    B) 414
    C) 345
    D) 505
    E) 520
    View Answer
    Option B
    Solution
    :
    In D, in finance = 28, so in Others = 250 – (32+28) = 190
    in E, in finance = 48 * 11/6 = 88, so in Others= 360 -(48+88) = 224
    Required total = 190 + 224
  3. In Office C, 25%, 20% and 50% people in HR, Finance and Others Department respectively are females. What is the number of males in these departments in office C?
    A) 147
    B) 202
    C) 296
    D) 213
    E) 234
    View Answer
      Option A
    Solution
    :
    In C, in HR = 16, so males = 75/100 * 16 = 12
    In C, in Finance = 16 * 5/8 = 10, so males = 80/100 * 10 = 8
    In C, in Others = 280 – (16+10) = 254, so males = 50/100 * 254 = 127
    Required number = 12+8+127 = 147
  4. What is the ratio of number of employees in Other Departments in offices A and D?
    A) 36 : 25
    B) 38 : 25
    C) 45 : 38
    D) 34 : 29
    E) 43 : 34
    View Answer
      Option C
    Solution
    :
    In A, in others = 270 – (18+27) = 225
    in D, in others = 190
    Required ratio = 225 : 190 = 45 : 38
  5. What is the total number of employees in Finance Department in all offices?
    A) 185
    B) 174
    C) 198
    D) 227
    E) 216
    View Answer
    Option E
    Solution
    :
    Required number 27+63+28+10+88 = 216

Direction (6-10): Study the following table to answer the questions that follow. Some values are missing. Study the table carefully and answer the questions based on data in table and particular questions.

  1. On Friday, if ratio of speed of boat to speed of stream is 2 : 1, what is the difference between the time taken by the boat to go upstream and the time taken by the boat to go downstream?
    A) 36 hours
    B) 54 hours
    C) 45 hours
    D) 72 hours
    E) 65 hours
    View Answer
    Option A
    Solution
    :
    Speeds = 2a, a
    So

    324/(2a+a) + 324/(2a-a) = 72
    Solve, a = 6
So speed of stream is 6 km/hr and speed of boat is 12 km/hr
    So difference in time = 324/(12-6) – 324/(12+6) = 54 – 18 = 36 hours
  2. On Monday, if difference between the time taken by the boat to go upstream and the time taken by the boat to go downstream is 20 hours, find the total time taken by the boat to go upstream and downstream.
    A) 20 hours
    B) 40 hours
    C) 30 hours
    D) 80 hours
    E) 60 hours
    View Answer
    Option E
    Solution
    :
    Given: 320/(a-4) – 320/(a+4) = 20
    Solve, a = 12 km/hr = speed of boat

    So total time = 320/(12-4) + 320/(12+4) = 40 + 20 = 60 hours
  3. On Tuesday, if difference between the time taken by the boat to go upstream and the time taken by the boat to go downstream is 45 hours, find the total distance covered by the boat to go upstream and downstream. Downstream speed is 24 km/hr.
    A) 720 km
    B) 540 km
    C) 360 km
    D) 680 km
    E) 450 km
    View Answer
    Option A
    Solution
    :
Let upstream distance = downstream distance = x km
    Speed of boat = a km/hr, speed of stream = b km/hr

    So
    x/(a-b) + x/(a+b) = 75
    2xa/(a2 – b2) = 75 ……………..(1)
    Also
    x/(a-b) – x/(a+b) = 45
    2xb/(a2 – b2) = 45 ………………..(2)
    Divide (1) by (2)
    a/b = 5/3
    3a – 5b = 0 ………………(3)
    Also, a + b = 24 …………….(4)
    Solve (3) and (4)
    a = 15, b = 9
    From x/(a-b) + x/(a+b) = 75
    Solve, x = 360 km
    So total 720 km
  4. On Wednesday, if the boat covered half distance upstream with usual speed and other half with double its speed, then it takes 33 3/4 hours less time than usual time to go upstream. Find the total time taken by the boat to go upstream and downstream.
    A) 120 hours
    B) 108 hours
    C) 92 hours
    D) 84 hours
    E) 128 hours
    View Answer
    Option B
    Solution
    :
    Let speed of boat = a km/hr
    So 270/(a-6) – [135/(a-6) + 135/(2a-6)] = 33.75
    270/(a-6) – 135/(a-6) – 135/(2a-6) = 33.75
    135/(a-6) – 135/(2a-6) = 33.75
    1/(a-6) – 1/(2a-6) = 1/4
    Solve, a = 9 and 2
    Speed of stream = 6 km/hr, so speed of boat = 9 km/hr [speed of boat remains greater than speed of stream] So total time = 270/(9-6) + 270/(9+6) = 90 + 18 = 108 hours
  5. On Thursday, difference between time taken by the boat to cover ‘X’ km upstream and (X+120) km downstream is 26 hours. Had the boat covered same distance upstream as downstream, what would be the difference in time taken then?
    A) 58 hours
    B) 62 hours
    C) 48 hours
    D) 56 hours
    E) 64 hours
    View Answer
    Option D
    Solution
    :
    Downstream speed = 11+7 = 18 km/hr
    Upstream speed = 11-7 = 4 km/hr
    X/4 – (X+120)/18  = 26
    Solve, X = 168 km = Upstream distance

    Downstream distance = 168+120 = 288 km
    Required time now = 288/4 – 288/18 = 56 hours

        Solution:
        Given: 320/(a-4) – 320/(a+4) = 20
        Solve, a = 12 km/hr ..mam how it is..by factorization I m not able to obtain this

        1. 16/(a-4) – 16/(a+4) = 1
          [16a + 64 – 16a + 64]/(a^2 – 16) = 1
          128 = a^2 – 16
          a^2 = 144
          a = 12

Mam inn ques 9 said second half dis coverd. At double sppeed of upstream. So it shud be 2(a-6) or 2a-6

    1. Boat covered half distance with its usual speed and other half double its speed.
Its – here is boat na ??.
So we will double the speed of boat.
Double not of upstream. Double of speed boat.
