Mixed Reasoning Questions for Mains Exam – Set 12

Directions (1-5): Study the following information carefully and answer the questions that follow.
A country has the following types of traffic signals.

3 yellow lights = turn left;
2 yellow lights = turn right;
1 yellow light = stop.
3 green lights = go at 80 kmph speed;
2 green lights = go at 60 kmph speed;
1 green light = go at 40 kmph speed.

A person starts driving from a point in North direction and he encounters the following traffic signals and is instructed to follow the given traffic lights:
Starting point – 1 green light;
After 30 minutes, 1st signal – 3 yellow and 3 green lights;
After 45 minutes, 2nd signal –2 yellow and 2 green lights;
After 36 minutes, 3rd signal – 2 yellow and 1 green lights;
After 12 minutes, 4th signal – 1 yellow light.

  1. Find the total distance he covered after the last signal.
    A) 146 km
    B) 152 km
    C) 124 km
    D) 155 km
    E) 134 km
    View Answer
     Option C
    Starting in North direction: 1 green light means 40 km/hr
    So 30 minutes at 40km/hr, means covers 30/60 * 40 = 20 km
    Next, 3 yellow and 3 green lights, means turn left and at 80 km/hr (45 minutes)
    So now distance covered = 80 * 45/60 = 60 km
    Now for next 36 minutes, 2 yellow & 2 green lights, means turned right and drove at 60 km/hr, so covered 60 * 36/60 = 36 Km
    Now for next 12 minutes, 2 yellow & 1 green light, means turned right and drove at 40 km/hr, so covered 40 * 12/60 = 8 Km

    So total distance = 20+60+36+8 = 124 km
  2. If the instructions for 2nd and 3rd signals are interchanged, then what is the total distance covered after the last signal?
    A) 104 km
    B) 98 km
    C) 124 km
    D) 116 km
    E) None of these
    View Answer
     Option D
    Explanation:
    The steps are:
    Starting point – 1 green light;
    After 30 minutes, 1st signal – 3 yellow and 3 green lights;
    After 45 minutes, 2nd signal – 2 yellow and 1 green lights;
    After 36 minutes, 3rd signal – 2 yellow and 2 green lights;
    After 12 minutes, 4th signal – 1 yellow light.
    So
    After 2nd – 40 * 36/60 = 24 km
    After 3rd signal – 60 * 12/60 = 12 km
    So now, total distance = 20+60+24+12 = 116 km
  3. Two persons followed the given instructions. One started in North Direction, and second started in West Direction. In which direction respectively are they travelling with respect to the starting point when they encounter the 4th signal.
    A) North-east, South-west
    B) North-east, South-east
    C) North-west, South-east
    D) North-west, South-west
    E) Cannot be determined
    View Answer
     Option D
    Explanation:

  4. If the second and fourth signal are encountered after 33 minutes and 27 minutes respectively, then what is the total distance covered after the last signal?
    A) 123 km
    B) 118 km
    C) 109 km
    D) 114 km
    E) 104 km
    View Answer
     Option C
    Explanation:
    Starting- 40 * 30/60 = 20 km
    After 1st signal – 80 * 33/60 = 44 km
    After 2nd signal – 60 * 36/60 = 36 km
    After 3rd signal – 40 * 27/60 = 18 km
    So now, total distance = 20+44+36+18 = 118 km

  5. If the 1st signal is – 2 yellow and 2 green lights, then what would be the final position of the person with respect to starting position?
    A) 14 km to the north and 39 km to the east
    B) 14 km to the north and 39 km to the west

    C) 16 km to the south and 37 km to the east
    D) 16 km to the south and 37 km to the west
    E) None of these
    View Answer
     Option D
    Explanation:
    Starting- 40 * 30/60 = 20 km in North

    After 1st signal – 60 * 45/60 = 45 km turned right
    After 2nd signal – 60 * 36/60 = 36 km turned right
    After 3rd signal – 40 * 12/60 = 8 km stopped
    So we get:

Directions (6-10): Each question below contains two rows marked by I and II. The resultant of each row can be found by the rules given below. Answer the question followed by the rows by finding the resultant with the help of following five rules:

1) If an even number is followed by an odd prime number, then multiply the two numbers.
2) If an even number is followed by an even number, then the numbers are needed to be added.
3) If an odd number is followed by a perfect square, then subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
4) If an odd number is followed by an odd prime number, then the numbers are needed to be added.
5) If an even number is followed by a perfect square, then divide the larger number from the smaller one.

  1. I.    7     7     3
    II.   7   16   23

    Find the addition of the resultant of both rows.
    A) 82
    B) 85
    C) 74
    D) 76
    E) 63
    View Answer
    Option C
    Explanation:
    For row I –
    From rule 4: 7 + 7 = 14
    From rule 1: 14 * 3 = 42
    Resultant of second row = 42
    For row II –
    From rule 3: 16 – 7 = 9
    From rule 4: 9 + 23 = 32
    Resultant of second row = 32
    So required sum = 42 + 32 = 74

  2. I.  16    14      5
    II.  6      2     X
    If X is equal to the resultant of first row divided by 6, then find the resultant of second row.
    A) 2.425
    B) 4.235
    C) 3.625
    D) 3.125
    E) 3.335
    View Answer
    Option D
    Explanation:
    For row I –
    From rule 2: 16 + 14 = 30
    From rule 1: 30 * 5 = 150
    Resultant of second row = 150
    So X = 150/6 = 25

    For row II –
    From rule 2: 6 + 2 = 8
    From rule 5: 25/8 = 3.125
    Resultant of second row = 3.125
  3. I.  8     1    10
    II. 6    X     7
    If X is equal to the resultant of first row, then find the resultant of second row.
    A) 142
    B) 168
    C) 182
    D) 170
    E) 199
    View Answer
    Option B
    Explanation:
    For row I –
    From rule 5: 8/1 = 8
    From rule 2: 8 + 10 = 18
    Resultant of second row = 18
    So X = 18
    For row II –
    From rule 2: 6 + 18 = 24
    From rule 1: 24 × 7 = 168
    Resultant of second row = 168
  4. I.   5     25     25
    II.  9     36     11
    Find the multiplication of the resultant of both rows.
    A) 54.5
    B) 47.5
    C) 52.5
    D) 60.5
    E) 73.5
    View Answer
    Option B
    Explanation:
    For row I –
    From rule 3: 25 – 5 = 20
    From rule 5: 25/20 = 1.25
    Resultant of second row = 1.25
    For row II –
    From rule 3: 36 – 9 = 27
    From rule 4: 27 + 11 = 38
    Resultant of second row = 38
    So answer = 1.25 * 38 = 47.5
  5. I.  21    19    25
    II.  8      5    20
    Find the multiplication of the resultant of both rows.
    A) 82
    B) 93
    C) 78
    D) 90
    E) 96
    View Answer
    Option E
    Explanation:
    For row I –
    From rule 4: 21 + 19 = 40
    From rule 5: 40/25 = 1.6
    Resultant of second row = 1.6
    For row II –
    From rule 1: 8 * 5 = 40
    From rule 2: 40 + 20 = 60
    Resultant of second row = 60
    So answer = 1.6 * 60 = 96
