World Co-operative Economic Forum formed in India
On the lines of the World Economic Forum, some co-operative sector leaders and experts have formed the World Cooperative Economic Forum (WCEF), to be based in New Delhi, claiming to provide voice to over three million co-operatives spread over all countries.

  • The WCEF will endeavour to promote cooperative thinking and cooperative movement, in addition to raising issues and concerns of the sector with governments and other stakeholders around the globe, a statement by the newly formed body said.

Udaipur set to become country’s first wetland city
Udaipur, ‘City of Lakes’ known for its enchanting surroundings, lakes, forts, palaces, and historical significance, is in a race to earn the prestigious title of India’s first-ever wetland city. 

  • The city, known for its numerous picturesque lakes, including Lake Pichola, Lake Fateh Sagar, Lake Doodh Talai, Lake Rang Sagar, and Lake Swaroop Sagar, serves as a major tourist attraction.
  • The Rajasthan government is actively working towards obtaining this recognition for Udaipur. The Environment and Forest Department has chosen Udaipur based on the criteria set by the Ramsar Convention for international significance.

RBI includes PM Vishwakarma under PIDF scheme; extends tenure of scheme by another two years
Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das said it has been decided to include PM Vishwakarma under the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) Scheme as well as extend the tenure of the scheme by another two years.

  • It is now proposed to extend the PIDF Scheme by a further period of two years, that is up to December 31, 2025, the governor said while announcing bi-monthly monetary policy.

India’s retail inflation eases to 5.02% in September
Months after elevating to its 15-months peak level, India’s retail inflation cooled down further in the month of September. Its retail inflation, aka CPI, eased to a three-month low in September on the back of softer vegetable prices. Moreover, the inflation came below RBI’s upper tolerance band of 2%-6%.

  • India’s retail inflation for the month of September raised by 5.02 per cent, compared with its growth of 6.83% in August, according to the data released by the ministry of statistics.

Microsoft completes $69 billion Activision Blizzard purchase
Microsoft has completed its acquisition of video game-maker Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, closing one of the most expensive tech acquisitions in history that could have repercussions across the video game industry.

  • The long-awaited acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has finally been completed, after facing numerous regulatory hurdles and legal challenges.The deal, which was announced in January 2022, is the largest in gaming history, valued at a whopping $68.7 billion

Asian Games Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra appointed Laureus Ambassador
Asian Games Gold medalist and reigning Olympic, and World Champion in men’s javelin, Neeraj Chopra was named Laureus Ambassador, pledging his support to Laureus Sport for Good.

  • His involvement with Laureus dates back to 2022 when he was shortlisted for the Breakthrough of the Year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards as a result of winning the first gold medal for an Indian track and field athlete at the Tokyo Olympics.

UP bags award for using tele tech for mental health & counselling
UP bagged the third prize in operationalising telemanas– using tele technology for mental health and counselling – on the National Mental Health Day on October 10,2023.

  • The award was given by ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India. Mission director, National Health Mission Uttar Pradesh, Dr Pinky Joval received the award.

Tamil writer Sivasankari presented with Saraswati Samman 2022
Tamil writer Sivasankari was awarded the prestigious ‘Saraswati Samman’ in 2022 for her memoir “Surya Vamsam”. This was the 32nd Saraswati Samman 2022.

  • The K.K. Birla Foundation presented her with the award, along with a citation, a plaque, and a prize of ₹15 lakh.
  • Surya Vamsam is a two-volume work that offers a profound glimpse into the life of an innocent child, who later evolved into an acclaimed author.

Indian Railways’ PSUs, RITES Ltd and IRCON granted Navratna status
Ircon International Limited (IRCON) and RITES Ltd(RITES) both Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Railways, have been announced as 15th and 16th Navratna respectively among CPSEs. The Ministry of Finance conferred ‘Navratna’ status on RITES and IRCON.

  • Entering its 50th year of incorporation, RITES Ltd is a leading transport infrastructure consultancy and engineering firm in India.The award of Navratna status will enable RITES to further nurture its brand, compete more effectively in the global market and pursue new frontiers more aggressively for growth.
  • The core competence of IRCON in 47th years is in Railways, Highways & Extra High Tension substation engineering and Construction.

Gill and Athapaththu named ICC Players of the Month for September
India’s talented young batter Shubman Gill wins the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September after run-scoring feats in his country’s trophy-winning Asia Cup campaign and the subsequent ODI series against Australia, while Sri Lankan icon Chamari Athapaththu claims the ICC Women’s Player of the Month crown after her T20I batting and bowling exploits last month delivered her side’s maiden series win on English soil.

  • Both players are crowned following votes cast by global fans registered at icc-cricket.com and a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media representatives.
