Maharashtra Govt launches new portal to take schemes to doorsteps
With an aim to make government schemes available at the doorstep of the common man, the Maharashtra state government will now use a new portal called ‘Mahalabharthi’, where all the state schemes will be enlisted. 

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde launched the ‘Shasan Aplya Dari’ (government at your doorstep) initiative with an aim to provide benefits of government schemes at one place.
  • Now, citizens can visit the Mahalabharthi website and after filling the requisite information, he/she would get a list of government schemes. Under this, a citizen–after filling the necessary information–will get a list of government schemes which he/she wants to avail and can get benefits.

GRSE launches ‘GAINS 2023’ to Promote Innovation in Shipbuilding by Startups
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, one of India’s premier defence shipyards and a Category 1 Mini Ratna Company, has embarked on a mission to identify and encourage the development of innovative solutions towards technological advances in shipbuilding by Startups.

  • As part of this drive, the Company launched GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme – 2023 or “GAINS 2023” in Kolkata leverage the eco-system that addresses present and emerging challenges in the ship design and construction industry.

Aiming to withdraw AFSPA by end of 2023, says Assam CM Himanta Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the government’s aim to completely withdraw AFSPA from the state by the end of 2023. This decision is part of an effort to restore normalcy, build trust, and address concerns related to human rights violations associated with the act.

  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 or AFSPA which empowers security forces to arrest anyone without prior warrant, was introduced in Assam, when the state was declared as “disturbed area” in 1990 November and since then it was extended every six months.

India and Australia sign agreements in the field of migration, mobility partnership and Green Hydrogen
India and Australia signed agreements in the field of migration and mobility partnership and on Green Hydrogen task force. 

  • The Memorandum of Understandings were exchanged after a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Sydney.
  • Prime Minister Modi said the India-Australia ties are based on mutual trust and confidence. He said they have constructive discussion on strengthening strategic cooperation in mining and critical minerals.

Indian Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar wins gold; Jeswin Aldrin takes silver at International Jumping Meeting in Greece
Indian Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar won gold while compatriot Jeswin Aldrin finished bagged silver at the International Jumping Meeting at Kallithea in Greece.

  • Successfully defending his title in the Men’s long jump event, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sreeshankar registered his season-best jump of 8.18 meter.
  • He beat his compatriot and national record holder Jeswin Aldrin, who claimed silver with an effort of 7.85 meter at the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze level event.


APPOINTMENTS

Sourav Ganguly named as brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism
Cricket icon and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been appointed the brand ambassador of Tripura tourism. The announcement came after Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury travelled to Kolkata to meet ‘dada‘ at his residence.

  • Chief minister Manik Saha too dialled Ganguly to offer him the position, and expressed confidence that his participation in the campaigns would give an impetus to the state’s tourism sector.

Shah Rukh Khan is now Realme’s new brand ambassador
Chinese smartphone maker Realme announced Shah Rukh Khan as its new brand ambassador in India.

  • The Bollywood superstar will be promoting Realme’s smartphone business as it prepares to launch the Realme 11 Pro 5G series.

Hari Budha Magar: Nepali climber who conquered Mt Everest despite disability
Hari Budha Magar, the first double above-the-knee amputee to ascend Mount Everest received a heroic welcome as he arrived back at Kathmandu.

  • Last week, Magar created the history as first double above-the-knee amputee to scale the 8848.86 meters tall Mount Everest- the Highest peak in the world. The former British Gurkha who lost his legs to the Taliban-implanted bomb during deployment in Afghanistan had summitted the Everest on artificial legs on May 19, 2023.

Bulgarian writer wins International Booker Prize for darkly comic memory novel
Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov and translator Angela Rodel have won the International Booker Prize for “Time Shelter,” a darkly comic novel about the dangerous appeal of nostalgia.

  • The book beat five other finalists to the prize, which recognizes fiction from around the world that has been translated into English. The 50,000 pounds ($62,000) in prize money is divided between the author and the translator.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Axiom Space’s Private Astronaut Mission to Test Cancer Drugs in Space
Axiom Space, a private space habitat company, recently launched their latest mission, Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2), to the International Space Station (ISS).

  • This mission aims to conduct experiments on human stem cell ageing, inflammation, and cancer in the unique microgravity environment of space.
