Goutam Ghose to chair panel to commemorate Bengali cinema centenary
The West Bengal government set up a 18-member committee chaired by eminent film director Goutam Ghosh with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the patron to commemorate 100 years of Bengali cinema.
- The committee, that includes thespian Soumitra Chatterjee as chief advisor, would plan the calendar of events and oversee implementation of the celebration.
Chhattisgarh awarded ‘State of the Year’
Chhattisgarh bagged the ‘State of the Year’ Award under the ‘business leader’ category as part of the India Business Leadership for the remarkable increase in business and services activities in various sectors.
- The plunge witnessed is said to be the result of various decisions taken on the policy in the field of business by the Chhattisgarh Government in the past few years and its effective implementation.
TN govt launches mobile app for farmers
In a bid to use technology for farmers’ benefit, the Tamil Nadu Government has come out with a bi-lingual mobile application ‘Uzhavan’ (farmer) that will allow ryots to have access to nine types of services, including details about their crop insurance.
- The app can be used by farmers to get information on farm subsidies, book farm equipment and related infrastructure and get details on their crop insurance, besides receiving weather forecast for the next four days.
Patna tops in 4G connectivity among 20 largest cities: Report
According to a report from OpenSignal, a wireless coverage mapping company, Patna has topped in 4G connectivity among 20 of India’s largest cities. It has emerged ahead of the likes of Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi.
- 4G user experience in the 20 cities was monitored for 90 days from 1 December 2017.
Gobardhan Yojna’ to be launched from Karnal on Apr 30
Gobardhan Yojna, a central government scheme for managing and converting cattle dung and solid waste into manure and biogas, will be launched nationally from Haryana’s Karnal District on April 30.
- Gobar is an acronym for Galvanising Organic Bio Agro Resources. Through the scheme, the government aims to ensure cleanliness in villages and generate energy by converting cattle dung and solid agricultural waste into compost and biogas.
- The scheme was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget speech this year. The government aims to cover nearly 700 districts under the scheme in this financial year.

Himachal gets $80m ADB loan for skill development
The Indian government has signed a $80 million (Rs 512 crore) loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to help improving skills of youth and modernising institutes.
- This project of estimated cost of $100 million (Rs 640 crore) is expected to be completed by 2022 and the state will get 90 per cent of the loan component as grant from the Central government.
IndusInd-Samsung tie up to facilitate ‘tap and pay’ credit system
IndusInd Bank announced a collaboration with Samsung Electronics to enable its MasterCard and Visa credit card customers to use ‘Samsung Pay’.
- IndusInd credit card holders can now ‘tap and pay’ at merchant outlets having Point of Sale (PoS) terminals using a wide range of Samsung Smartphones.
Indian Overseas Bank launches IoT-based customer service app
Leading public sector bank, Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) as part of their ‘Customer First’ initiative launched Internet of Things (IoT)-based customer feedback application on a pilot basis at its Cathedral branch in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
- To increase customer satisfaction at the branch, the bank introduced three initiatives with IoT.
