          Your reason is valid. Perhaps, you dint get my point. But the sentence is correct in its given form.

          See, in english, ‘the number’ usually denotes a singular noun (a single notion}) but it can also signifies plurality of a thing.

          Here in the sentence, we are talking about the drought related problems posed by cauvery is much more than the other delta.
