In the passage given below there are 10 blanks, each followed by a word given in bold. Even blank has four alternative words given in options (A), (B), (C) and (D). You have to tell which word will best suit the respective blank. Mark (E) as your answer if the work given in bold after the blank is your answer i.e. “No change required”.

The scheme proposed by the Budget to (1)_______ [withdraw] transparency in electoral funding is a complete sham. It does nothing to (2)_____ [highlight] the present system in which industrialists and traders shovel money to individual politicians, to gain friends in high places and (3)_____ [protest] influence when it counts. Worse, the proposal axes the fundamental (4)_____ [concern] of electoral funding transparency: the citizen has a right to know who funds the political parties that (5)_____ [must] their votes but might be beholden to (6)_____ [sincere] interests and act against the public interest.

The biggest failure, of course, is that the scheme does nothing to get a fix on how much a party or a politician spends. In the absence of that, a party might choose to (7)_____ [inculcate] a tiny fraction of its actual expenditure. Suppose the actual expenditure is Rs 10,000 crore and the party chooses to show an expenditure of Rs 500 crore. The entire discourse till now has been on how to make the source of this Rs 500 crore transparent. Now, even that has been (8)_____ [abandoned] – people can buy electoral bonds and make anonymous donations to political parties, according to the finance minister.

Even this assumed anonymity is fictional. The bank that sells the electoral bond to a donor knows who bought it. When the party (9)_____ [chases] the bond, again the bank where it is redeemed would know which party redeemed it. The government of the day, which owns most banks will know who (10)_____ [dishonored] whom. But the rest of the public would not. This is not the kind of transparency that a democracy requires.
